Is the vertical regulator necessary or do anything if you're using nitro, since there's a reg. already on the tank? I know some tanks have a fixed output. Why?

As best I can tell, fixed output tanks save money as they've got less moving parts.
And to answer your other questions, double regulation is a good idea for anything. All of my markers are double regulated, granted its more expensive, but its also much more consistent.
I would definately keep the reg, and possibly upgrade it. Not sure not sure how much you'd want to spend, but something that can move to another gun when you upgrade wouldn't be a bad idea.
