i have been out of paintball for a few years, but when i left angels were on top timmies were just making a name for themselves and impulses were coming on strong, non electrics cockers and mags ruled the world. coming back in to it i immediatly look to the angel once again but am finding so many other choices out there and alot of people bashing angels. i suspect its cuz of the price, as i am an adult with a good job money isnt an issue for a marker, i just want the best available. i know once you get to a certain level your splitting hairs as prices shoot up, what gun do most pros use now?

the best guns out there would probly be the PLanet Eclipse Ego, it has many variations (sl66, XSV, Nexus and soon the E-tek) they are all very good and are probly the most dominating marker in the game at the moment
If you are still looking at angel's, the brand new Angel 1 is a whole bunch different than any angel in the past (it's very small, light and fast) although I can't tell you much more than that, you may want to look into it
other very good markers include the Dye matrix series ( dm4, 5, 6 and DMC are all very good) as well as the Proto (which is a sister company to dye) matrix series (pm5 and pm6)
The Smart Parts Ion has basically terminated the impulse and opened up the used category completely and is probly the lowest of the high ends (after some upgrades)
the cocker has seen it's hayday and so has the e-cocker but some people still like them and the Karnivore is the best of the cockers if you are looking at that catagory
hope that helps

If you want just pure performance, look into what pbrascal said, but a high-end back when you played is still most likely considered a high-end now(with some exceptions). Newer high-ends are most likely faster, more reliable, simple, lighter and better looking than previous ones, but I'd personally take a X-mag or a SFL Emag over any ego,DM or angel anyday.

Once you get into the high-end category, it is all personal preference.
Take a visit to your local proshop and ask to dryfire Quests, Timmys, Egos, Angels, Shockers, and other high-end guns I am most likely forgetting.

pretty much anything over 500 would be considered high end. i'd suggest looking into matrixes, timmies, shockers, quests, cyborgs, and egos.

I get more comments on my Tribal, when I used it, than most of my other markers.

Really, now days look for
DYE
WDP
MACDEV
FIRST ENDEAVOR PAINTBALL (new company)
BOB LONG
PLANET ECLIPSE (seems to be the hot item of the moment)
SMART PARTS
Besides that you have other comapnys such as Evil, Proto and others that make basically spinoffs or custom versions of the makers made by the six companys listed. Basically its now looking for a Spool-valve or a poppet spring marker you like. http://www.pbreview.com/forums/showthread.php?t=299083
And its true that autocockers are ageing but if you really like them take a look at the Karnivor. And for Automags they are awesome and on more then one occasion I have almost bought one, but they are out of the race as well.

Right now the high ends are (company in Bold):
Dye: Dm6
Proto: Pm6
Planet Eclipse: 06 Ego, Etek, PL Egos
WDP: Angel 1
Bob Long: Gen4 Timmys (Infamous and Empire2)
Smart Parts: PL Shockers
Thats pretty much all the top high end stuff. Dye/Proto and PE ftw.
