how could i test to see if the paintballs i use are right for my barrel?

The balls should fly around 30 feet with a good puff of air.
There should be very tiny spaces between the ball and bore of the barrel too, but some parts still touching so they don't roll out.

how tight should the ball be in the barrel and should it be the same tightness througout the whole barrel or should the ball be more loose the further it goes down the barrel?

That's how tight.
It's the same bore throughout the whole barrel, unless you have a 2 piece, so it will be the same tightness and squeez on the ball all throughout the barrel.

They should be tight enough that they don't roll through but loose enough that they can be blown out the barrel with little effort. If you are using thicker shelled paint (only shooting it will tell for sure but for the most part cheaper paint has a thicker shell) you can use a tighter fitting ball but if you are using a thin or brittle shell then you really need a perfect fit.
