I saw the results for a 3-man tournament at a fairly busy field near me where a guy got 5th (out of like 30 teams) BY HIMSELF!

but it's 3 man teams. 1 vs 3 is not 3 man teams.

The rules actually say "upto 3 players", therefore any number of players under three can submit a team.
