What are these, and which would be a better investment?
I realize that I would also have to get a better hopper than my gravity feed. If I make my custom 98 electronic, will I have to strip the gun every time I have to change the battery?

the response trigger is a mechanical way of making your rate of fire faster...
how it works: it vents excess air from a cycle to a piston/chamber behind the trigger, the piston moves out and manually resets the trigger... sweetspotting this pressure can cause a full auto like reaction... NOT TOURNEY LEGAL
the etrigger/egrip- uses a microswitch and solonoid to trip the sear rather than the trigger itself tripping it.
how it works: trigger just needs to push a switch (picture a mouse click), and the solonoid does the work... different modes, different firing limits, most are tourney legal
to change the battery, all you would need to do is remove 1 side of the grip panel and you pull out the battery....
so no, you will not need to strip the marker everytime to change the battery... if you would like pictures, let me know, i just so happen to have my marker open right now with the etrigger

Thanks so much, for that post. I am definitely leaning towards the egrip, and I would love a picture if it is available.
I have heard that the custom 98 egrip is not user-friendly. How is this so?

if you have any common sense whatsoever... its fine... dont dunk it in water...lol... dont over oil the asa and shoot it through so it soaks the board.... just little things like that... i havent had ANY issues with any of my 4 etriggers.... ill take pics now and post them in a few mins.

my e grip also works great. since it uses very little battery power the 9V lasts a decently long amount of time. about the user friendly part. it does take a little extra time to switch it on and off, and to change firing modes on the fly, but honestly i think the turbo mode is the best mode to keep it on. you have complete control over when the turbo kicks in. and it also works pretty good on my gravity hopper. gravity feeds are quicker than most people will admit. i doubt it will keep up with a constant full auto though. of course get a hopper in the future, but dont sweat it too much.

Sorry for all of the questions, but the nearest shop is a little hard to get to, and I'd like to be sure before I go buy it.
How do you change firing modes/ switch it on and off?
While rate of fire is obviously not my number one priority, I would like to be able to keep up in speedball. Is there a big, noticeable difference between mechanical and getting the egrip?
Are chops/dry fires frequent?
I read this on the specialops site: "And though I love my E-Grip, if you’re seeking out worry-free paintball, you’re better off with a Response Trigger (http://www.specialopspaintball.com/shop/product_detail.asp?SKU=261+0050&CAT=107202302401) or nothing at all." Why is this?
This all leads up to the ultimate question: I plan on getting a more expensive electro marker in a year or two. Is it really worth it, in this case, to get the egrip?

R/t is cool if you want to stay mechanical.... But egrips beat them %100 of the time...
To turn the older style boards on/off, you pull the trigger and it shoots....
The WAS board has a push button that you need to push in for a second... You need to use a small allen key or screwdriver....
Ape-not quite sure... Haven't had much hands on with them....
Changing modes on the older style needs a small screwdriver to turn a wheel that clicks into a mode.
WAS is done by using the trigger and pushbutton....
Ape, I'm pretty sure its just the trigger...
Chops and skipped shots are caused by your loader not being able to feed fast enough.... That's cured by a faster loader...
As for upgrading now.... That's really your call... You could add the egrip now, and not want to upgrade later.... I would get upgrades that can travel with diff. Markers first.... Like a good hpa tank, a good mask, a good loader, a good pack.... Than go into marker specific items...
What kind of upgrades/mods have you done already?

You is a tippy genius ain't you? Anyway, the egrip is the best way to go if you want to keep up in speedball. The RT isn't always legal, and its not as adjustable then the egrip.

R.o.f. Does NOT matter in speedball.... I pump in speedball... And I do just fine... All these markers shooting 15bps and more as first markers are making new players use it as a crutch rather than a tool....
And yes, I have been told over and over I'm a tippy genius... But I haven't dealt with ape boards much...

I have a 14" linear barrel, that's it. I see your point about the parts. I'll take that into consideration.

If you KNOW for sure, next year you'll be getting a new marker... Hold off on the egrip.... Get a good loader, and hpa if you plan on being on a speedball course at all....

Yeah, maybe I'll use the money instead on an hpa tank. Thanks for the help, though, as I'm still not totally sure.

I still checked, and on the tippmann website, it says the e-grip is not for the 98 custom. All of the places I checked have it only for the custom pro and a-5

Newer 98 customs and the custom pro's are the same... Only diff. Is what comes stock....
A5 uses the same board setup for the etrigger/egrip

i just put in my egrip 3 weeks ago and im getting a spyder imagine. im gonna alternate. why? i have no idea. i just like the idea of having a choice of what im going to use for the day.
changing the modes on the egrip is a breeze once u memorize how to do it. takes less than 30 seconds. like using a new cell fone. once u figure it out its easy to use.

I think I will go with the egrip. Would you be so kind as to tell me which model to get, if there are many available.
Is this a good choice?

Do I just need to buy the egrip and double trigger, or do I need to get a different grip separately, or buy anything else?

all you need for the egrip you need this
http://cgi.ebay.com/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=190013200984&category=47241
you dont need a double trigger but it helps if you have a double trigger. You could get this

If the grip is the same, where is the button to change modes?

if u look carefully at the second to last picture, ull see two horizontal slots in the frame. to the left of the board and up and left of the solenoid. the bottom slot is for the light, and the upper one is for the button. easy to get to, the rubber on the outside of the grip is eay to pull apart. i just stick the little screwdriver in there. i think thats why they gave it to you. lol
