Typically if you chop a paintball you get paint on your bolt and potentially into your feedneck. The paint gets on subsequent balls as they drop into your breach. They will hook, dive, curve and potentially break in the barrel again, especially if there's still shell in there.
Usually when this happens on the field, most people squeegie their barrel and try and get as much paint out as they can to keep playing. If the marker turns into a blender, it may force you to field strip the marker and clean the bolt and breach so as to remove paint and debris. Usually this doesn't happen as much anymore in markers with eyes and with decent paint.

Well you have two types of ball breaks. A barrel break in when the paintball breaks in the barrel. Its usually not that serious. Just take it off, run a squeegee through it and put it back on. Then clean it properly after the game. A breech chop is more serious. Its when a paintball gets stuck between the bolt and feedneck and it breaks. This can cause the gun to jam and its a total mess. This requires you to take off your gas source just to be safe and take out the bolt. Clean the bolt and breech and put it back in and play. But like Lopez said breech chops hardly occur anymore. Now a lot of guns have eyes which is a system that detetcs when a paintball is loaded into the gun. When the beam is broken (break beam eyes) or when the beam is being reflected back to the eye (bounce beam) the gun will fire. When the gun detetcs no paintball it won't fire. You also have anti-chop bolts which cause the marker to uncock stopping the bolt from moving forward but these aren't fool proof and still sometimes chop paint. If your gun doesn't have eyes or a anti chop bolt find out how fast you shoot and get the appropriate hopper that can feed fast enough for your gun. Either way its still good to get the appropriate hopper as it will offer the best performance.
