one day during a big game probly in '05, i recall seeing someones gun equipped with a rediculiously LONG barrel, im talking approximatly 10-15 feet long at least. his gun was speedball style, im not much of a wiz about them, but i mean wow...im wonder if it had any range on it, which im pretty sure it did with all the looks he was getting from about a thousand people.

anyone know why people get barrels this long??

Overcompensating for something...

No, really, I think it's just one of those, "Hey, look what I have!" things. A barrel that long would be essentially useless. Length doesn't really add range or accuracy. I have an Empire kit and don't find the shortest tip to be less accurate than the longest. My favorite barrels are the shortest I own.

Something that long is just overkill, but people buy the things nevertheless, and they pay lots for them. A 4.5 foot barrel just went for 70 shipped on Ebay, and I guarantee that the buyer will not be satisfied with the accuracy of that thing.

10 to 15 feet long huh? Let's not over-exaggerate. Most people get long barrels like this because they think it helps them increase their performance (like it would on a real marker). However the physics and principles of a real rifle and a paintball marker are radically different. The ammunition is different and operates differently. It's been substantiated that 12-14" is the ideal length for a barrel on a marker. 16" has advantages in certain situations but improved accuracy isn't one of them.

That being said...CP's website shows a 21" tip for a CP 2-Piece barrel.
