youll get dehydrated if drinking an energy drink while balling. Also, if you didnt know, it is highly recommended not to drink them also during fitness because your blood pressure can drop to dangerously low levels. There have been reports of people having to be hospitalized.

I don't drink em, At most I have a cup of green tea before I go, but by and large I notice that players who drink energy drinks tend to make bad decisions attributed to over-aggression. Like, not like capitilizing on opportunities such as bunkering, like running up without thinking the angles and risks.

yeah, i've heard that before. that's the main reason i don't take energy drinks with me. occasionally though, i'll have one before i go to the field.

Thanks guys. I was hoping someone would go ahead and post that. The best thing for your body and mind would either be water or Gatorade. Even with Gatorade, you have to make sure that you drink water periodically. Energy drinks are usually high in caffeine, causing dangerous spikes in heart rate, respirations, and will definitely dehydrate you. I know first hand how bad caffeine can be; I once drank some a Starbucks Doubleshot too soon to the start of a 50 mile road race (got the wrong start time), and 10 miles in, I was feeling light-headed, parched and queasy, despite downing some water. By the end of 50 miles, I was pretty close to completely beat. I also threw up about halfway through, which didn't quite purge all of the caffeine. Moral of the story?: no energy drinks before strenous physical activity.

monster, rockstar, NOS. or if im trying to stay away from caffeine, gatorade<<< more thirst quenching
We have always alternated Gatorade with water. We just started throwing in a little Mountain Dew on long days. I was always against this in the past. It seems to help keep your blood sugar up. I always thought Gatorade had enough for that. For some reason a little mountain Dew every now and then is making a big difference for us. I'm talking about 6-8 oz. every couple of hours. Anymore than that and I am ready to puke. Any less and the fatigue is worse at the end of the day. It seems to act like a little pick me up. One day I'm going to pack the picnic basket and actually eat half way thru the day...

^thats a good idea, I think I'm gonna start doing the dew a little bit at the field too. not too much, soda+running=sick for me. but my metabolism is crazy fast, I need some sugar if I don't eat for awhile, like say at the paintball field. usually I stick with water but a little soda would probably help with this.
energy drinks are terrible for you, your body shouldn't have to process all the junk in those things all at once. plus I hate crashing afterward. I love coffee and have the occasional starbucks double shot if I'm up late studying but you gotta be careful with caffein, national geographic did a pretty crazy article on caffein studies and it can have dramatic long-term effects if you drink enough (three cups of coffee a day). it doesn't dehydrate you though, thats a myth. if you want energy for a long day, eat plenty of carbs for a few days beforehand, stay hydrated, and bring a snack to the field (a somewhat healthy one, not junk). a regular work-out schedule to stay in shape will give you more energy day in and day out, but thats more of a lifestyle change rather than something to help keep you going at the field.

I sometimes have a monster or two during play, but thats only when I play at my nearby indoor field. What I really like is Snapple White Tea. You definately have to try it, tastes good, gives you a boost without the 42 or somewhat gra ms of sugar Monster, or Rockstar has. Also, its unhealthy drinking Gatorade by its self during play. When I run marathons, all my trainers say, that if you drink gatorade while doing any physical activity, you will mot likely get sick and end up throwing up or collapsing. Always mix your gatorade with water during play, but you can drink it regularly when you are DONE.

Energy drinks are generally like, bad. have a banana in the morning and/or in the afternoon and just drink something to give you electrolytes and then some water.
check out that baby drink called Pedialyte, it tastes alittle funky but it keeps you running.
I started mixing my own gatorade. I use 8-9 scoops instead of 12 to make a gallon. Or I just dilute it with water if it is pre-mixed from the store.

Gatorade and water for hydration. Red Bull came out to our field a couple times and gave away a bunch of drinks. I'll admit, I have downed a Red Bull to give a boost when I wasn't feeling very energetic. You do have to be careful and be sure to hydrate on top of that though.
Like someone else said, if you have a full day of play ahead of you, the energy drink will most likely wear off before the event is over and the crash will make you even worse than you started.

Water AND Gatorade. Gatorade alone makes my throat feel dry (probably due to the sodium) so i'll chase it down with some water. I play back so i can't have a raspy throat.

Mostly water. I drink 8 bottles a day on normal days, because being well hydrated makes me feel much better and because I take creatine. All you kids that say you don't have enough energy and try to get more by drinking tons of caffeine need to stop. Get more sleep, improve your diet, and drink more water.
it doesn't dehydrate you though, thats a myth.
Where did you get this from? I've always been told that caffeine is a diuretic and therefore causes dehydration.
Gatorade alone makes my throat feel dry (probably due to the sodium)
Same. Try drinking Gatorade Rain instead, it doesn't leave your throat with the dry, scratchy feeling. The green kind tastes really good as well.

Caffeine does dehydrate you. The caffiene will cause you to sweat and urinate more, which dehydrates your body over time. Like STO Balla says, the best way to be energetic is to eat right, get plenty of sleep and exercise on a regular basis.
If you're young and have a lack of energy, look at that solution first. Us older guys have a little more excuse, but I still feel pretty good most of the time.

I don't drink sodas, I mostly drink water, gatorade, tea, or fruit drinks. I do drink one energy drink a week though, mainly because I like the way they taste. I don't do it before I'm going to be doing anything active outside though.

Drinking energy drinks(such as monstor, sobe, rockstar, etc.) is a bad idea before doing anything really physical. They're high in caffene which can lead to body problems and dehydrate you. Definately DO NOT drink soda, it'll usually just make you sick. Really sick. Best thing is to rehydrate your body with water or a atheletic energy drink such as gatorade, propel, powerade, etc.

dont drink energy drinks before you play, thats horrible for you. You need natural energy, eat oranges/drink orange juice. They have tons of natural sugars and will give u a good kick. Powerbars(the original ones, not ripoffs, any flavor) are also great, and same with oats and peanuts. Also drink tons of gatorade and water. While you are playing, gatorade is the best thing to drink, it replaces electrolytes. When you are done drink plenty of gatordae. It replaces tons of stuff in your body that water doesnt. The only time to drink an energy drink is maybee an hour or two after if you feel dead and need some energy to get through the rest of the day or night

No energy drinks for me anymore. I drank one about half way through the day, it gave me energy for like 30 minutes, but the entire time I was having cramps, and was slightly dizzy. After the 30 or so minutes though, I was more tired than I orrigionally was.
Anyways, no, I only drink Powerade (or Gatorade) and water. Probably near a gallon throughout the day, sometimes more depending on the heat.

1. A citation in my latest-edition intro psych textbook says different; although I can't remember the exact text used, I'll give you a quote when I can though. It might just be dealing with psychological effects.
2. It's a duiretic, as steated below you but above me, so it makes you secrete more fluids when sweating or peeing... or something like that. The increased heart rate also would likely increase the amount of water intake you need to stay properly hydrated, as it effectively makes your body work harder even while at a rest.

I never found the taste to be enticing, and I don't want to have to go to the bathroom every half hour either.

I will pour out 1/4 of my gatorade bottle and fill it with room temperature water. Gatorade does quench my thirst but it makes my throat dry and my saliva thicker than normal (Yes it's nasty but true.) Also it's not good to have cold water or gatorade, for you get cramps and what not. But that is why I mix water and Gatorade together. Not a big fan of energy drinks while playing. And believe it or not, Guarana in most energy drinks like Monster, Redbull, and Bawls, is a substance found in bird crap, FYI.

Guarana is a substance that breaks down in your digestive tract to become caffiene.

Energy drinks tend to give people more cramps than energy. Yes they wake you up b/c of the high ammounts of cafinee, but you also sweat, losing energy faster. I drink the odd "rockstar" but usually you want a drink by the makers of Gatorae (propel) b/c its not high in cafinee, its more of a watery drink b/c of that ur energy is better cause its running off water.

Me to, I'm always nervous before I play my first games. I also don't notice any effct from those drinks, other than the loss of an extra dollar for the name. I do however like how they have vitimans.

paintball is a physical sport. drink what you would in any sports competition, like water, gatorade, etc.
IMO energy drinks aren't too helpful - despite giving you a kick, any sports player knows that the carbonation absolutely KILLS your muscle ability - it basically starves your muscles out of oxygen by filling it with co2. kinda ironic when playing paintball lol :dodgy:
