View Full Version : What Kind of Paint Should I Use to Touch Up my ProMaster?

I got my ProMaster the other day, and discovered a little speck of an area where the annodizing was bubbled out. Rubbed it with my finger, and the anno flaked right off! Now I have a little speck of silver that shows up pretty good.
So I'm wondering if anyone can recommend a paint to use, that will not attack the anno or anything.
By the way, the gun is gloss black.

Thanks,
Gripp

Sorry pal, but it happened. There is a chip in my annodizing and I'm wondering what the best way is to fix it.
So if anyone can help me, that would be great!

dont paint your gun, it will only make it look worse. every gun ends up with a knick or two eventually anyway, so I'm sure yours will end up with a few more from normal use. its very unfortunate, but as far as using paint to touch it up I wouldn't recommend it. I've seen a few guns that ppl tried to paint themselves (including a brand new Borg, god that was tragic) and they looked awful. the paint didn't stay on very well either.

I don't want to paint the whole gun, I just want to touch up this speck. Gloss black is a fairly easy color to match, I just want to make sure that I don't put anything on the gun that will attack the annodizing or anything.
Hmmm... Does anyone know if a Sharpie is anno-safe?

I used sharpie on a Spyder, it didn't attack the anno, but it didn't match the gloss black very well....the Sharpie faded pretty fast, and wasn't nearly dark enough to begin with.

thank you, no one believes me

Ano is a dye not a coating so it cant chip b/c its apart of the aluminum

The dye must not penetrate very far then.
To tell the truth, on close inspection, it looks like a mark such as might be made by a carelessly-handled Dremel tool, allowed to tap the gun while it was running.
So are there any specific paints that will attack the anno, or can I use just about any kind of enamel?

dont worry about it so much, if it really really bothers you..you could get it re annoed, but that would be expensive. If it only bothers you a little just take a permanent marker to it.

for the love of god dont use paint, it will look like junk

Take a trip to walmart, find the color that matches best.

Tape off the immediate section around the speck, give it a shot of paint, and let it sit.

It wont match completely, but it'll make it non-noticable at normal viewing distance.

Btw, my full out paintjobs have turned out quite well!:P

Whoa, I wouldn't do that. I was only thinking a tiny bit of paint, using the point of a pin for application.
I guess I'm starting to get over it now. I just won't think of it as a scratch. I'll think of it as... A birthmark. Or maybe a beauty mark. Oh well.

Thanks all for the help.

I def wouldnt reccoment you paint your promaster, but just for 'craps' and giggles, here's how my two Wrath jobs turned out:

Gold and Navy Blue

And Black to Red

Just so you could see, not ALL paintjobs look like crap. :D

i was woundering if it it would be safe to bring the eye covers, ram cap, and the reg bottom to get professanly air brushed black, or would i have a probleum with the paint chipping?

Try trading with someone. Black ProMasters are the most common, and their owners are usually more than ready to trade their black accents for some colored ones.

Hendrix painted his whole guitar like this with nail polish

Ahem... anyways, there are chemicals made to blacken aluminum that can be had for relatively cheap ($9?); I personally couldn't get it to work on my Viewloader very well... although those are made out of a crappy alloy, they don't even polish particularily well.

ya black nail polish will work b/c it is safe on the ano

Notafinga!

ano cant chip off b/c it dyes the aluminum, it doesn't coat it. So ya i doubt what you said happened

Actually, if there was a contaminant like oil or grease left on the body before the anodizing process, then it could cause the ano to not take and bubble up above the metal, which sounds like the case.

To the original poster, have you contacted ICD about this? They may exchange bodys for you.

I called them to ask what I should use to touch it up, but I never actually asked them to compensate me for it. I don't know if it's really worth bothering them about.

I would do either a sharpie or nail polish.

IF, you feel so inclined that it NEEDS to be repainted you can always get a new anno, but i'd take a few nicks over buying a new anno any day.

get it powder coated. its a little more durable than airbrushing so paint wont eat the finish away over time. Much better price tag compired to anno depending on person.
