View Full Version : Why is the Promster open bolt?

Correct me if im wrong but closed bolt seems to be more efficient, more reliable, and much less dirt gets into internals. If thats true why is the promaster open bolt with a cocking pin when you never even need to cock it. The second I air it up the bolt pops back just like an ion, proto, or other closed bolts. Why did they make the PM open bolt when it appears they could have just put a cap on the back and closed it?....am I missing something here?

the pin isn't for cocking it links the bolt to the ram

they did that i guess so its really easy to get the bolt out, for easy feild strip, but im not really sure.

I know that it links the two together but couldn't they just as easily chopped off the top of the pin and sealed off the back? Don't get me wrong, I love my PM, no complaints...im just wondering if there is any reason why they would have made it open.

The "cocking handle" is actually a field-strip pin, so you can clean the gun out easily. Yes, they could have sealed it, but then it would be much harder to strip.
Besides, that point on the back of the gun is sweet. :)
By the way, I'm not sure about the Proto, but I am pretty sure that the Ion is open-bolt.
If dirt does happen to get in through the back of the gun, the best thing to do is field strip it immediately (leave it aired up) and run a battle swap backwards through the gun.

I think you're a little confused about the definition of a closed and open bolt marker.

In an open bolt marker, the bolt is in the back (which you may think of as "cocked") position between shots. thus the feedneck is unblocked, or OPEN, so paint can drop into the breach. thus, OPEN BOLT.

in closed bolt guns the bolt is in the forward position between shots. cockers, Palmer Blazers, shoebox shockers, and Excaliburs are examples of this. when you fire the gun a burst of air comes out the bolt to propel the ball, then the bolt cocks back to let a ball load, then slides forward again and waits there until you shoot again. since the bolt is in the forward position, the breach is blocked, or CLOSED. thus, CLOSED BOLT.

whether a gun is open or closed bolt has nothing to do with whether the bolt is exposed or not. the Ion and Proto are open bolt guns just like the PM. the difference there is they have ENCLOSED bolts, which are different. it just means the bolt is, well, enclosed. also, being spool valve, these guns can't have exposed bolts like the PM, they must have enclosed bolts. so the reason for most guns having enclosed bolts is because their design requires it.

the reason for the bolt pull pin is to link the bolt to the hammer. it sticks out and is removable so you can remove the bolt quickly and easily to clean the top tube of your gun if you chop. The Nerve and Pimp have fully enclosed bolts and therefore have a different method of removing the bolt, but this is more complex and adds to the weight of the gun.

enclosing the bolt on a PM would not make it any more efficient, nor would it make it more reliable. it would provide the bolt with more protection against dirt getting into the top tube thereby keeping the bolt in better shape, but I havent found this to be a big problem unless you're playing somewhere really dusty and your bolt would have to be pretty messed up to noticeably affect your gun.

sheesh was I wrong. I've been humbled.

I didn't know the definition of closed and open bolt. I always thought open bolt just meant the back is open LOL. Thanks for the clarification. So the Ion and proto aren't closed....huh. Thanks guys.

nopers. its aight, common mistake. the vast majority of guns are open bolt just for future reference.

Wow, most explanations about closed bolts would not have included the boxes, or Excals, much less Blazers. Nice job, don't forget the phoon tho.

You forgot the Omen, which is a closed bolt blowback.
The Sovereign is closed bolt aswell I think.

Then there's some oddballs such as the AutoPhantom, Strokerized(sp?) PGP's, etc.

oooh, try not to think about the Omen too often, that's a nightmare in a tube. Nice additions.
