I live a very long ways from the field I play at, so practicing shooting there is not an option. I live by a small mountain that is also a park and I know of MANY places there that are very far from any paths and no one ever goes within 100 metres of there. Would I be able to set-up just some targets and practice there or would that be a horribly bad idea?... I live in Canada also if we are going to go into the legal side of things.

I do it in my backyard.
Before I started doing it, I brought my gun around and showed the neighbors what I was doing and told them they could watch to see what a paintball marker(I was being diplomatic) was and some tried it out. A 74 year old woman who lives across the street from me emptied half a hopper.
As long as no one calls the police, you should be fine. Even then, I don't think you would have to worry about anything that isn't related to making to much noise...

Also, my backyard is tiny and definately not an option.

As long as you own the land you're good for definate but it doesn't seem like you do so I think you should contact your authorities before you try it.
