View Full Version : "marker" does nothing

Why do we call paintball guns "markers", no matter what people are gonna view them as guns. By calling them markers you do nothing for yourself or the paintball community, as long as these "markers" shoot something they are going to be considered guns. Until the anti-gun people actually know paintball then they will understand that it isn't all that bad.

Yes, but at least it shows we are trying to distance ourselves from violence, and effort has to count for something.

I don't think anti-gun people are looking for violence as much as the fact that it shoots something

I call it a marker because it isn't a gun. My marker doesn't shoot over 500f.p.s. so therefore its not a gun. I also believe that if you call you marker a gun then it will give paintball a image of being related to violence.

I call it a marker becuase it makes colors like a marker :) Plus it sounds way better than, "Hey Johnny wanna come see my new gun?"

*sigh* In the past week or two they've had a couple huge threads on this subject....

I call it a gun most of the time, just out of habit.

Ppl need to stop making these kinds of threads! This issue will never be solved, so just let it go. I call it a gun around fellow pbers, and marker around parents and in school. I'm not getting arrested for talking about "guns" in school, and a teacher taking it as a threat!

Latte swilling soccer mom brings her 12 year old to the local field for the first time. While she is busting out her Visa card she hears "gun" this and "gun" that. It makes an impression. "Marker" this and "marker" that make a different impression. L.S.S. Mom is on the cusp about paintball, we as players can turn her into an ally, or an enemy. What would you rather have? I want her to feel safe and want her kid to have a great time, meet good people, and maybe learn something bout safety and teamwork.

I guess you missed the Uber thread on this subject last week.

The typical anti-gun people have trouble finding their *!@% with a map, compass, GPS unit, and native guide. :D

However, I call it a marker because it IS a marker. It's original use was to MARK items (cows, trees, etc) at a safe (or convenent) range. Call it what you will, it will not change the fact that even the fanciest PB marker is nothing more then a high tech paint throwing device used to MARK via paint another item.

Definition for gun:

1 a : a piece of ordnance usually with high muzzle velocity and comparatively flat trajectory b : a portable firearm (as a rifle or handgun) c : a device that throws a projectile

depending on what definition you use, it can go either way. In my opinion, however, you go with the first one, b/c they put it there for a reason.

Not on a thing...

I'm babysitting my 1 year old god son. Right now the little dude is saying "no, no ,no, no". I guess I needed a little more engaging way to communicate.

Both words are correct. If we need a really P.C. term Ebonclaw will cook another one up. The word "gun" isn't evil, but certain people get emotional over it. They don't want to believe that there are evil people in the world. Since people aren't evil things must be. Guns and drugs are 2 of the big faceless evils they try to vanquish. They hope that somehow this will lead to a better world. Some of them will eventually turn that negative energy our way. They want to fight "guns". "Markers" are just sports equipment.

Certain people are cool enough to realize that paintball is good clean fun. Around them we can call our toys "black death", "gravedigger", and "doom". We all know the difference, lets just be smart around those bored fools looking for a cause.

Actually by Canadian government, and possibly U.S. a gun is anything that fires a projectile at over 500f.p.s.

I once saw a Mag "spike" a 525 over a chrono at my home field. The ref just sent the guy back to staging, where he got it dialed back down. I wonder if that law is based on game rules or potential.
