my 50 year old father wants to get a new barrel for his completly customized tippmann. im trying to convince him that a barrel kit is the way to go. will you please explain to him why a huge bore is not the way to go.

A huge bore is not a good idea because there will be a little bit of "play" when the ball is in the barrel, and the ball may get a spin one way or another and will hook uncontrolably. A kit is the way to go, as the paint will not be so tight in the bore that it breaks, but it will not be so loose that it will move super easily in the bore.

I don't think a kit would really be worth it even for the most upped tippmann. A larger bore barrel would work pretty well, like a .691 CP or .690 Ultralite.
If you're really set on a kit, I recommed a small CP kit (maybe 3 backs), evil pipe, or the Pepperstix or Scepter kits. The problem with kits is that out of the 5 backs, you might only use 2 or 3.

i'm trying to decide on the kaner kit or the pepperstix, i like how the kaner has a few small bores and 12-16" tips, the pepperstix are priced better and have the 8" backs but smallest tip is 14"
i was thinking of researching the pipe kit a bit more as well
edit: currently using an 2000 cocker but looking to move up to a blackmagic

The Kaner Kit is my recommendation out of those two, but I would recommend the J and J performance Edge Ceramic kit.

I agree 100% with Kowz. CP's don't come in a 691 though. They have a .689 and .693 and I highly recommend CP's. They're well made and have a great deal of "bang for the buck". In otherwords you pay for some great quality at an affordable price. A one piece CP is like $40-45 and will be a beast.
To your other point, overboring a little...especially in humid conditions where paint can swell, isn't a bad thing. However, overboring a lot will cause problems (like MecTurtleCocker went into). Usually selecting a mid size bore, especially for a Tippman, is a good move and a reason I highly recommend a .693 or .689 CP for your marker. If you have to get a kit, I recommend the CP kits and get the .685, .689 and .693 backs. This combo will allow you to shoot almost any paint.

If you are getting a kit, you should either go with the J&J edge kit or the Evil Pipe Kit. Plus the pipe kit is only $40.

i heard the backs from the j&j kit can be hard to get off cockers or is there a trick to it? just getting back into paintball after a long break so i'm pretty much a noob to alot of the new equipment and have never owned or seen a barrel kit =\
edit: actually i've heard the backs from several other kits being alittle hard to get off as well

The Redz kit is the best for cockers. A ceramic isnt too bad with a full bodied cocker, a mini blocked one (integrated ASA and Front block) is no problem.
