Hello all,
I have finally decided to get into paintball after a year of waiting. I need help to pick my first marker. I will be using it for tough woodsball, and thats about all I will be using it for. The markers that I am considering are the:
Tippman 98 custom
BT-4 Combat
Spyder MR1
I have 230 to spend on my whole setup. Here are some packages that I have found. I want your humble oppinions on these packages
http://www.amazon.com/Combat-Scenario-Paintball-BT-4-Marker/dp/B000M0GLJC/sr=8-3/qid=1167512837/ref=sr_1_3/105-8851815-0477257?ie=UTF8&s=sporting-goods
http://www.amazon.com/Spyder-Tactical-Paintball-Marker-SNIPER/dp/B000LZLMP6/sr=1-12/qid=1167512966/ref=sr_1_12/105-8851815-0477257?ie=UTF8&m=A32DO2WY2M0IZT&s=generic
And a Tippman 98 custom package with about the same things as the BT-4 for more money.
I am really leaning towards the BT-4. I would like your oppionions and experiances with this marker. It was originally alot more money than it is now, don't know if that means its good or not, but for the price i can get it and 2000 paintballs for a day of playing with a budy of mine, he wants me to get the 98 custom but somthing draws me to the BT-4. So please help me decide which one to get!
Thanks and Happy Newyear!

Well if you must get those three I'd pick the Spyder MR1. It's durable and field strippable which the Tippmann and BT are not. It's also shorter and lighter than the Tippmann and BT. Not to mention more accurate. The only thing the Tippmann has over the Spyder is that you can run the Tippmann over with a mini-van and it still works fine. IMO I'd get the Spyder.
For a better deal though I'd look into refurbished electronic Spyder's as they're durable and fast. They're also cheap, ranging from $61-$80 in price. If that $230 were my money I'd buy a
Refurbished Spyder Pilot ACS-$80
Viewloader eVlution II hopper-$61
20oz. Co2 tank-$30
Thermal lensed mask-$30
NXe 3 pod pack-$12
3 pods-$9
Squegee-$5
Barrel condom-$5
Diablo Heat paintballs-$36 for 2,000.
It's still under your $230 range. Maybe let you buy a new barrel.
Also the BT-4 is a copy of the Tippmann basically. They both have different looks and same internals.

If you mostly want to play woodsball I strongly reccomend the tippman or BT beacause spyder are more into speedball, also with tipman or BT there are sweet WOODSBALL upgrades like sniper barrels, stocks, and then if you want to kind of modify them into electronic guns like spyders you can with the e-grip and double trigger or response trigger. They are a bit harder to take apart and clean, but you can get basically all upgrades for them for whatever you want to play and they are also very reliable. I mean if you wanted to play more speedball I would definatly suggest the spyder but since your into woodsball get the Tippy or BT, that way you can later get the e-grip if you change your mind.

personally Ild go with a tipman. Specifically the A-5. The gun is durable, accurate and very upgradeable. I would shop at www.actionvillage.com they have the best prices for new markers.
If you wanted to try a used marker go to ebay, I have gotten 4 guns from ebay and I have never had a problem
If you want to PM me with links to auctions I'll check them and let you know if the deal is good or not

Well, I have only tried the 98c, it aint too pretty or spectacular, but it gets the job done reliably. I have a spyder, they are very easy to field strip, and the BT is just like a Tippmann...so I've heard :)
In conclusion, I say go with the MR1.

No kidding the tippman A5 would be an amazing choice, I have one myself and it works great but there over $300 so I would go with 98 custom or BT (More with the BT) Spyders are NOT woodsball guns people.

Packages tend not to give you the best gear for the money.
You need to reassess what kind of woodsball you are playing:
1. Am I going to be playing in cold weather?
2. Does my field offer both HPA and CO2?
3. Am I going to be playing games for 4 hours or 1/2 an hour?
3b. Do I need an efficient gun for these games?
4. Do I shoot alot of paint?
Etc. The thing is you need to decide if you can play w/ CO2 or air(better) and if you need pods or a faster gun.

Oh really? Can you please define for us a "woodsball marker"? You can use any gun you want in the woods.
I reccomend you go for the Bt-4. It's got more of a mil-sim style milled body and it will perform exactly the same as the tippmann, so why not go for the one thats cooler looking? The spyder will have a longer trigger pull and its kind of uncomfortable with the stock. That and the fact that you'll need to use an elbow with it increases the chance of chops. If you were to look at a different model spyder, perhaps a single trigger one such as a spyder compact then I would have to vote for that. Spyders are quick to strip so it'd be easier to oil it or clean it out at the field than a tippmann. Go with the one you like the best, I see since you have your eyes on the BT-4, choose it.

Thats cool, I'm sure you will love it...and what's this about spyders being strictly woodsball? He was looking at an MR-1 anyway which is strictly for woodsball. My victor II works fine for woodsball, just don't get the blue and you may wanna spraypaint it like I'm going to. I think you can bring (most) speedball guns to woodsball, but you usually can't bring woodsball-specific markers to speedball

Why not? I play at Pevs@AG and we get lots of Egos, DM's, Shockers, Intimidators, etc. playing woodsball. In Summer, Fall, Winter or Spring. Don't let the marker you have dictate what "type" of paintball you should play. :finger: Many high end markers are just as good in one type of paintball as they are in the other.

I did not say I would bring all markers to woodsball, just most. And, yes I would, I would just be more careful with it then say, an A-5. But, I do not have the money to buy markers for that, as it would be just impractical. If it was the only marker I had, then of course I would play woods with it.

go w/the tippmann 98c. i have 1 and itz 1 of the most accurate guns ive ever played w/reviews aside. itz really durable and is pretty efficient on just co2. i play woods ball a lot and i fill up my 200z. once and im good 2 go 4 the whole day. and the tippmann can handle most paints...dont get any evil or anyhting realy brittle though. and there r dealers everywhere so if anyhting goes rong...it'll b ok. but i reccomend an electric hopper or ull b choppin quite a bit.

I would, why not? It's not like I'm going to bury my gun in the snow. Most high-ends guns are better on brittle paint too(Shockers, not really) than Tippmanns, etc. And they can hold up in the snow, so I'd play w/ my gun in any weather.

First of all let me welcome you to the wonderful (and sometimes painful) world of paintball :bouncy: . My suggestion to you is to go with the spyder MR-1. Spyders are, durable, easily upgradable (tons of upgrades), easily to repair and clean. My brother has a 98 custom with response trigger, which is a good gun but it is terrible repair or upgrade when it comes to internals. They are more hassel to take apart than it is to take to a shop and spend $10-$20 to have someone do it for you, whearas I can have my Spyder apart and back together in less than 5 minutes. BT is just as bad as Tippman, not to bash on Tipppman, because they do have a great product. BT and Tippman are the same thing, as a matter of fact BT stands for Ben Tippman. Instead of the package with the cheap-o Jt mask, do yourself a favor and spend the extra money on a higher end thermal mask, such as a JT proflex or flex 8. My personal favorites are Vents and the new V-Force Grille. Happy hunting andhave fun! :D

If I had the choice between a DM/timmy/angel etc., or a tippman with a "sniper barrel" and scope, I would take the DM/timmy/angel etc. Hell, I play woodsball with my wrath LTD instead of my spyder imagine. It would be much better for woodsball actually, because with a high end gun, you usually use HPA. HPA won't freeze outside like CO2.

the 98c is what put tippmann on the map and is the most dependable gun on the market.and is easly upgraded. go with that u can pick up a kit at your local walmart for about $180 then get a 20oz tank about $40 and u are on go!!!!!!!!!!
