i have noticed that mags are becoming less and less feilded in tournaments. Is there any reason behind this? I always thought mags were great and planned on getting one if i ever go far in paintball, Maybe, the e mag will change all this.Any opinons?

Ok, to understand why the mag isnt as popular as it used to be, you have to udnerstand who the mag really was (I've wanted to say that for a while).

Ok, the time is around 1997 (I may be off by a year). There are two camps of opinion regarding tournament markers. Based on factual information or not, it was believed that you could either have an autococker and shoot accurately, or you could get an automag and shoot fast. It was pretty much split 50/50, and the mag is at it's peak around this time. But from way out in left field, comes a gun with a computer chip built in. Extremely low pressure operation, electronicaly activated solenoid valves powering the gun, and a trigger that could become shorter than anything previously seen. It's appearance ushered in a new era of firepower to paintball. This gun was called the shocker. Within months another electronic gun appeared on the scene, the angel, which was even faster than the shocker. People were blown away by this, and it became widely accepted that electronic guns are the fastest guns available. But Tom Kaye hadnt been sitting idle all this time. During the appearance of electros, he also unveiled a marker with an even faster cyclic rate than ever before seen. Sporting a new type of valve that could recharge in 1/24 of a second, and a trigger that was returned with gas pressure, it was called the automag RT and it was the fastest thing seen to date. But there was a problem. Tom Kaye had done what he'd set out to do, but he'd done it too well. The RT was too damn fast. People were all using 12 or 18 volt revvies at this time, and the fastest feed rate you could hope for was 13 balls per second, if you were lucky. Angel owners turned their max ROF to 12, and they were fine. The automag wasnt electronic though, and there was no way to turn down the ROF. When shooting rapidly it became difficult not to start racing on the trigger, and when the gun started to approach it's maximum rate of fire, the hopper could not keep up and the gun would break paintballs. A good number of automag loyals bought the RT, but though starting strong, this problem caused it's popularity to drop. It's now late 2000 and Tom Kaye has a new invention he plans to take back the market with. The e-mag. Combining the insanely fast rate of fire of automag RT internals, a reactive trigger, and a microchip, will let you shoot very fast in semi automatic, but at the same time electronically limit your MROF so that you dont overshoot your hopper. Being still relatively new, nobody can say wether Tom Kaye has taken back his share of the market, only time will tell.

That was Paintball History for tonight, I'm elTwitcho, reminding everyone to tune in next week when we talk about the evolution of the electronic marker, from early Dome Switches to anti-chop eyes, be sure to watch it. Goodnight, and god bless

Wow that was nice elTwitco I have had similar knowledge bestowed upon me. Basically auto mags were the bigboys until the new wave of electros came in. However i think that the automags are going to have a come back... youll see

I think regular automags and minimags are overpriced because they don't come w/barrels, hoses, etc and regular wgp cockers are getting better and cheaper. Also, electros are getting cheaper.

Oh just a couple of years actually. I'm not exactly old school, but I do a ton of reading, and I talk with almost anyone I meet who knows anything about paintball. I pick stuff up in the process. There's alot of other people on the site who been around way longer than me, but I still try :)
