The difference is the output pressure.

An HP tank is usually fixed at 800(most) or 850 psi.
An LP tank is typically 400(most) or 450 psi.
Older markers and current blowbacks and mech markers that use CO2 can also use the HP tank.
therefore, HP tanks output is equivalent to CO2(not actually, but close enough for our purposes)

The mini runs like a champ on 200 psi internally.
To let the markers regulator run easier, we should bring the pressure down from the oldschool 800 to a closer pressure.
400 psi lets us relive some of the stress on the markers regulator, but still gives more than we need to help negate loss of pressure (shoot down) at higher rates of fire.

A good analogy. Take a garden hose and bend it in half. Water stops easy, right?
Now do the same thing with a firehose coming off a hydrant. You might be able to do it, but it is definately harder.

I use an adjustable tank and have it turned down to around 420 psi.
At that imput pressure my broken in mini is in +-3 fps range and shoots like a champ. (at one field I went to thier chrono seems pretty crappy and I was at +-1 fps the two times I checked it)

well, yet again, he basically said it all, if you need nething else answered then i would check the stickies around the tanks section or post some questions in there

all new guns are being made to use low pressure tanks but most will still werk wit high pressure tanks, i would go with the low pressure tank tho,, its just smarter

Most manufaturers will have a color coding on thier regulator necks to indicate base output.

Adjustable regs have a second guage to let you see the current output pressure in addition to the normal guage that shows the tanks internal pressure.

A guage can typically be mounted in most(guess what one of the ones is that you can't do it with) markers ASA to read the pre-regulator pressure.

yeah like red vs blue crossfire tank

or the sticker on the outside normally has some sorta indication

Be aware though that not all colour codes relate to output pressure. PMI used to colour code their regulators depending on the fill pressure (don't know if they still do that) - black for 3000psi, grey for 4500psi, red for 5000psi.

Centerflag use a different type of "code" - regulators with a round shoulder have a low output pressure, while hexagonal those with a hexagonal shoulder are high pressure.

Or you can look at the sides of the reg on some tanks, empire fuel for example, has the output pressure laser engraved into it.
