I tell him time and time again, that for 200$ (his price range) he can get better than a tippmann 98c . But he doesnt believe me, and he wants to get the pro or whatever with the ACT, but im trying to tell him he can get an electronic gun with eyes for 200$.
But dont get me wrong, i know tippmanns can be nice guns, especially for woods, but if hes gunna be going with me to gateway, they dont play woods as much as hyperball and mounds.
Also it would be more expensive, because the gun alone cost 160, while he could get this pirannah evo
http://www.actionvillage.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=3h9l0Lo50f1l7vxrmLKleLDtzN1szLrnMQ0=?Pro ductID=icLAqArbwZMAAAEOSb80w9Pe#
and i told him i'd give him my old electronic hopper.
Edit: and remember, he doesnt have anything, so he still needs the hopper, mask, and co2/hpa.

if he cant afford a nice loader and a nice tank, then buying an ion is moot.
why make him buy an ion if all he can afford is C02 and a grav feed? thats not gonna work out nearly well.
but then again, these damn kids could get off their asses and get jobs and not worry about petty budget restrictions like 20 bucks

Refurbed MR1 - $59.99
CO2 tank - $10.00 or $25.00
Used Egg 2 - $30ish (Overkill, but it's better have the security.)

Tell him to save more money and buy an Ion package for 299 on Actionvillage. It comes with the ion, tank, and loader. It's a great deal for someone starting out.

I still wouldn't trust noobs with EP markers.
Here's what I would do.
Refurbed Imagine-$63
Used eVLution II-$35
20oz. Co2 tank-$13
JT Proflex or VForce Profiler mask-$60
NXe 3 pod rec harness-$12

Well I will sort of agree with the OP in that a 98c might not be the best investment in a long term marker.
I am a huge tippmann fan, but dollar for dollar I think yu will find that an A-5 is a better deal and a terrific marker for new players.
It is a durable marker that is substantially easier to maintain over the 98 series and it performs great. It also is very upgradable, though some care should be taken or you can end up dropping big bucks into it with not a huge performance difference.
Tippmannparts.com is a great place to get a good deal on a marker or marker package.
a good example is that you might pay 250 for a full package (http://www.tippmannparts.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=catalog.prodInfo&productID=88&categoryID=52) but this is everything you need to play and you won't need a high end hopper (50-140 dollars extra) to fire at a high rate of fire and NEVER chop.
If your friend does not need a tank and mask a egripped factory refurb A-5 can be gotten for 205. Instant reliable and fast firepower.
I have been playing for many years now and I still love playing with my A-5.
Granted it is a smoking upgraded beast, but over time any A-5 can be brought to that level of performance , or close for a marginal investment(120 - 220 for barrel and cyclone ups and maybe a rampage board). But a stock egripped A-5 will lay down 12-15 bps no problem.
And there are lots of cheap home mods you can do to them to increase performance.
Don't get me wrong, I love EP LP markers. There are lots of great markers in that class that are fundamentally better tha the tippmann blowbacks. But an A-5 is not so different that I would steer someone away from them if they have a preferance for the tippmann look and reliability.
Ions are superb nooby EPs. They do have a steeper learning curve, require much more expensive accessories, and can be broken through simple user error (like blowing a noid). But if care is taken, Ions are great markers.

i agree with the above post, go with an a5 its a good gun and reliable. ions are just to tricky for somone just starting out, a spyder xtra would work well too. that was my first gun

Just let him buy the Tippmann if he's dead set on it. He'll be easier to shoot that way when you go play speedball.

A couple of my friends aren't very tech savvy, so I tech their guns when they come over. That way, they can shoot a good gun while not having to learn how to fix/lube them right away.
I voted for a Kingman gun, though:
Refurbished 06 Imagine - $67.95 (http://www.firstcallpaintball.com/pages-productinfo/category-99_113/product-3994/paintball-guns-kingman-kingman-kingman-06-imagine-cp-refurb.html)
Co2 tank - $16(?)
Halo B/Vlocity Jr - $130ish/$95ish
If he goes further in paintball, he won't have to upgrade hoppers as he'll have one of the best already. The Halo and Vlocity will also fight against the blowback that a Spyder would have.

Too bad the Spyder detents have a hard time fighting back. I would recommend a eVLution III over a full force-fed hopper on a Spyder with stock detents as they tend to be very, very weak stock. I know on my Sonix I had quadruiple (sp?) feeds with a VLocity Jr.

I've seen mixed results. Worst case scenario; you have to install a second set on the right side of the gun.

Not to say the 98 is the best bet, but at Walmart there's actually a Tipp player's pack that comes with the mask, repair kit, 9oz tank, squeeges, etc. for $160 (oh, and of course the 98c.).

Ions are WAY over rated. It seems like its a fasion trend everyone owns a ion so every one else goes out and buys a ion .. its a vicious cycle.

I disagree slightly. Ions are not too bad. Not great, but not too bad.
It isnt about fashion, but cabbage and good marketing:

I do not endorse or agree with the above image, but gosh darn if you were a noob wouldn't that image be apealing?
No here is a vicious cycle:

You obviously know very little about Ions...
As paranoid stated, they are appealing. Not to mention they function very well for the price, and it's quite easy to find someone to help you maintain it if something happens to the gun.

Why would you spend $200 on a tippman 98 you can get the pro new for $100-130? I would tell him to look into a spyder or trilogy pro.

Yeah, I love mine and it's the third marker I've gotten. I bought mine more for the price than anything. I didn't honestly realize how wide-spread they were until I got one. (Not that that matters, NOT buying something because everybody has it, is just as dumb as buying something for the same reason). But I could also see why your friend wants the 98. While I'm honestly not that big a fan, they are really solid. Just a few days ago, I dug one out of my friends basement, cleaned off 7 years of gunk and old paint, lubed it up and played with it.

What he needs is a piranha. not necesarily an evo, but maybe a gti. those are cheap and good, plus they look good too.
here's a really good gun, i have it, but not the package:

It's not a bad deal, but it comes with Ricochet Rhino (ALWAYS ON, meaning no detection system). I'd rather not get that, to be honest.
Plus, I hate that trigger... I just hate it...

I agree with mjr_paranoid. I believe that the tippmann A5 is the best gun dollar for dollar. It is a very good marker with many upgradability options and can suit you whether you're playing woodsball and POSSIBLY speedball. Yes my friends, I've seen it done before, and sometimes, its not half-bad either.

i voted for "some sort of spyder" - however - i would suggest one of the better mech spyders. you can get a package deal on an Xtra pretty cheap.
I got a nice setup a few months ago for 155$ (170 shipped) that had an 06 xtra, 20 oz tank, hopper, mask, 4+1, and a remote. add a decent barrel for about 30$, and you should still have leftover cash for the first day out.
granted, i went with the remote setup because i'm a big guy (6'1", 300 lb.) and it lets me get tighter around the corners. there are several similar packages, some a bit cheaper. Depends on what he wants vs. what he needs.
Honestly, i would sit your friend down in front of the computer, and research. browse the ebay stores and the marker package \ spyder auctions. Educate him as how to different styles of markers operate.

I voted for the evo.
This is based on a couple factors. First, Tippmanns are overpriced. I will never say they are bad markers, because they are not. But especially if you are working within a budget, there are other ways to go. For the same price of a basic mech Tippmann you can get something that will have more features to it. And if your friend is dead set on the Tippy style of marker, there is the BT-4 and US-5, which are both very similar to the Tippys at a fraction of the cost.
The other thing is the fact that you will be mostly playing speedball. A good speedball marker will always perform well in the woods, but the opposite is not necessarily true. I love my US-5, but with the stock, offset hopper and the length of an inline blowback, it would not work very well on a speedball field. Sure, I could tailor my US-5 to be a speedball gun, but it would be much more cost-effective to buy a speedball gun from the start.
Also, if $200 is his limit for everything, buying a more expensive marker means that you have to skimp in other areas. I would rather buy a good set of thermal goggles and a cheaper marker over a higher end marker and a pair of crappy fog-em-up goggles.

Used stock ion(100ish)
used eggy2(30ish)
47 3k(50ish)
and 20 for shipping. or change the eggy to a halo for 50ish

I could have sworn that I posted on this topic, and anyway I already voted spyder. But id like to add that the VS2/3 are about as good as you can get with blowbacks of any kind, and theyre cheaper than Ions.
