This just in-

Dangerous Power @ ActionVillage.com

Smart Parts, Inc. and Dangerous Power announced the signing of a patent license agreement giving Dangerous Power a worldwide, non-exclusive license to make, sell, offer for sale, and distribute products covered by Smart Parts’ electronic paintball gun patents.

Smart Parts owns several U.S. and international patents and pending patent applications related to the use of electronics in the control and operation of paintball guns. These include, for instance, U.S. Patent Nos. 5,881,707; 5,967,133; 6,035,843; 6,474,326; 6,637,421; and 7,100,593, as well as patents and/or pending patent applications in numerous other countries.

Basically, SP and DP signed a deal that allows DP to operate without having to worry about infringement on SP patents, probably to avoid a lawsuit before one could get started.
Anyway, the good news is it looks like the Fusion's future and DP's is now safe.

Thank God, I didn't think that anybody would ever be safe from Smart Parts.

Why do I get the feeling that one of the patents held by smart parts somehow relates to the use of batteries in electronic paintball markers.

Whatever, this is good news.

No, more likely DP paid a lump sum in order to acquire the rights to reproduce the particular patent for a determined amount of time. Part of the Fusion's appeal is the price point, and having to cough up royalties on each gun is more than likely not an option, as it would jack the Fusion's price up. My guess is they probably gave SP some cash and SP said "ok, you now have license to reproduce the parts in question freely".
I think this is evidence that SP is not out to monopolize paintball, as they are evidently willing to strike a deal with even a smaller company, rather than demand that royalties are the only option.

Big enough where they can do what they want, and push other companies around.

Did you not notice the dodgy in what he said?

Does every new company wanting to make an electronic gun hafta make an agreement with SP or face getting sued? If so I don't understand how they can do that.. how does that bring about a free-market economy when one company has some potential to stop all the rest from staying in business? Probably overthinking it though.

Its the use of microswitch I believe, thats what they used to get rid of companies a while ago and I think they're using the same thing now.

Dp is coming out wit a marker that is can compete with the ion and is in its price range so it probobly wont be as good as the fusion if you are saving up money to buy the new dp gun.

Smart Parts is the devil company, IMO. I used to like all of their stuff, but I don't like how they try to bone their customers and other companies "Oh we made the first electro pnuematic markers ever." They're like the EA of the video game industry.

I wouldn't be surprised that if the deal hadn't been made, SP would sue DP for patent infringement. SP:The Threshold looks too much like the Shocker, we're suing!
