Im currently planning on buying an e-grip for my 98 custom..but with the e-grip i also need to buy an electric hopper or cyclone which will have me spending around 170 to upgrade my 98 custom. Would it even be worth it to upgrade my 98c? I figured it would because it will last a lifetime since its built so tough, unlike many electros (for what ive heard, not meant to flame). So my question is, would it be worth spending another $170 on my 98c when i could just buy an electro?
thanks

It depends.
Can you get a decent electro for 100 bucks?
You will still need a good hopper with one of those. And unless you go piranha or spyder you will likely need an HPA tank.
I personally see an egrip as a massive change in how well a 98 shoots. It just redefines the experience when you have one.
To be honest though, if you like tippies, I would sell the 98 and get an e-gripped A-5.

I'm gonna agree with mjr. A Tippmann, especially an A-5, is going to be much more reliable than almost any electro out there, save for maybe the Invert Mini. If you can afford it, pop for an A-5 with an E-grip already installed.
Some people aren't terribly happy with the board that comes with the factory e-grip, but you can always go aftermarket.

Im with mjr. paranoid Id sell the 98 for an A-5 wit E-Grip. also, A-5's are sapposed to be more reliable and last longer.

And I know from personal experience that A-5's respond better to upgrades than 98's do.

If you plan on going into the competitive speedball world in the future, I would definitely advise just cutting your loses and going with a high end electro. Electros are much lighter, more efficient, have smaller profiles, and have almost no recoil; all of these futures just make playing a little easier. However, if you are just sticking with rec ball (which is perfectly fine), I would pic up an e-grip and a high-er end hopper. If you are worried about prices, you can find used gear for a little less if you look around. I have seen e-grips for as little as $50, and Evos for as little as $40 on various trading forums and on ebay.

I've got a WAS board that works, it just needs a wire soldered from the microswitch to the board. It's got the solenoid on it already and everything.

IMO, spending a couple hundred on a Tippy just isn't worth it anymore. My A-5, when electric, is the most unreliable gun I have. Now it's still very reliable, but my other high-ends are a bit better. And of course the high-ends perform better as well.
