How do you get into a tournament (yeah, you gotta have a team)? that is, for us older, non-svelt players, do they have an "over the hill" category of competition?

What do you mean by older? Paintball doesn't discriminate by age. In any given tournament you can be playing against 60 year olds and 14 year olds. Instead it goes by classes. The more popular classes are Rookie, Novice, Amateur A&B, and Pro. There is also an open class where anyone can play.

didn't mean to offend Monkey ... I've never played in a tournament, dont' even have a team. I was just wondering if someone like "me" (no tournament experience) could enter a tournament.

Yeah you can do tournaments. Ya gotta start somewhere, and it sure is a hell of a lot better than rec ball :D Try Rookie class or just dive right in to an open class...You will learn quickly.

Just curious, but why do you think it's better than Rec Ball?

tournaments are more intense, faster pace, more at stake, and the stress pushes you and your team to the edge...it really tests you. It is the difference between driving your car to wal*mart and driving your car in a ralley cross race :D

plus you are paying 5 times more that day or days so you will play harder when you know your money is for stake

What kind of prizes are generally given away in the Rookie/Novice categories ... Afterall, we're all motivated by something!

The biggest prize in local tournaments is bragging rights. If you manage to find a tournament that is sponsored by a team or field that knows what they are doing you could see guns. The tournaments I played in colorado were sponsored by Fury. Prizes were usually guns ($150-$170 range), jerseys, gloves, masks, and free entry into upcoming tournaments. Like the tournament I did yesterday, the prizes weren't as great, but we won jerseys, a case of paint, 10 free field passes, and a trophy. I have seen ournaments where the rookie prizes were better than the upper classes. It all depends on the promoter and sponsors, also how much it costs to enter the tournament.

I have simple needs ... Braggin' rights are fine, new jersey would be nice also. I really don't won't a new gun, but maybe some upgrades would be OK. Of course, I'll need a team ...

May not sound great, but even the third place prizes are proabably worth more than the entry fee ... and it you win, it's free stuff you probably wouldn't buy. I say go for it if you have a team.

$100 for what? for a team or per person? what size team?

The 3-man tournament I just did was $75 a team ($25 each) and that included all day CO2 and air. The world cup wasn't too bas when I did it either. If I recall it was around $1500 for a 10 man team.

Skyball which my team will be going to costs maybe $600 a team for rookie class. But the prizes are good in term of major money around $3000 for first place

i think its 20 bucks a person, but when you think about it, its kinda like just going to friends to a rec place, except more tense and you can win cool stuff. im not sure what the fee is though, it says 100 dollars per team and 10 air fee for each person, what does that mean?

Paintball Monkey

means $43 per person and that would include all day air...of course you still need paint ;)

Still, it'd be worth it, $43 for entry and air, another $100 for paint (and I'm blowing the estimate cause I don't know how much you'd need and I'm thinking that's about average for a case of good stuff here) and you could win more than that in prizes. I'd do it, if I had a team that is.

well of course i would to if i had the money, id also buy a ferrari and maybe get an inground pool.... but yeah i think the prizes at my local tourney series rock, and once me and my friends get good, we will enter the rookies one. It said the prizes go for both rookie and novice people, it would be cool to get those 5 cases of blaze...

MuckRaker

yeah ... I've already got an inground pool, but I'd rather have five cases of paint. Can't take the pool to the field.

What category of "over the hill" are you?
A) 20-30yrs old
B) 30-35
C)35-45
D)45-55
E)>55

Just curious I'm "B" and just starting in this sport and feel over the hill at the fields I've played?

I'm 36 ... probably over-the-hill was a bad adjective. I was really wanting to ask about getting into a tournament if you've never played in a tournament. But seeing how many young whipper-snappers take to the fields where I play, I'm probably considered over the hill.

Generally prizes won in tournaments are cheap plastic trophies and bragging rights! My team has won some really cool stuf though; 6 AKALMP VLM mini-cocker kits, JT jerseys, JT gloves, free entry to NAAPSA Nationals, JT IZE masks and a bunch of other things.

I play a lot of rec but I really enjoy tournaments. The comraderie and friendship of the other teams is well worth the few extra bucks.
