First Q: why are the inserts so small? wouldent they have to be as long as the barrel?

Most (if not all) decent barrels become progressively larger along the length. The freak sleeves are long enough to ensure the ball is fired accurately, and no more. After that, the barrel does the same thing all the others do. Not to mention short sleeves are easier to deal with than long ones.

It only takes the ball 6 to 8 inches to get up to speed & on it,s flight path. The rest of the barrel stabilizes the ball.
