Do the model 98 and the Custom Pro have different threads? i got a pipe kit for a friend that was for a 98, but he says it doesn't fit his CP. i've looked and i've never seen any different kinds of 98 barrels. so what gives?

old model 98s have different threads than new 98Cs/CPs, the older barrels only work with the old but the new barrels work with the new and old

^^ Yeah, that.

the ORIGINAL m98's had different threads, than the second (i believe) generation of m98's fixed the issue with the threads (the barrel came unscrewed while playing) and THAT thread has been the standard ever since.

If your marker has "gills" and is actually called an M98 (Model 98), it's got the old threads. When they started calling it a 98C (98 Custom) and removed the gills, they also put the new threads in. That's also when they swapped the push/pull sear design.

This confuses me because I have the M98 and newest 98 and both barrels fit each other jsut fine, along with my progressive and freak...

The stock M98 barrel should not fit on the 98C. Anything that fits on the 98C, however will fit on the M98.

Of course, there may have been a transitional period I'm not aware of.

i ordered a progressive from ebay and it was called a m98 threads. And yet it fits fully flush on my custom pro.:eyes:

Then either they don't know what they're talking about or I don't.

re-read my post...

the original model 98 (gills, first run) had their own barrel threads, SIMILAR to what we have nowadays on the 98's... BUT they had an issue with coming loose and undone in the middle of games...

so when tippmann released their second generation of model 98s (gills still) it had the new style threads... (still used the spring PULLING the sear)

than the 98 custom came out (still used the spring pulling the sear)

than a newer version of the 98c came out (still used the spring pulling the sear)

than the c-pro's came out (NOW is when it switched to the push style sear that is found on the a-5's)

at the same time, the new generation of 98customs came out as well as the ACT versions... all with the new style sear.

so the only barrel threading that is different is from the very first couple of thousand model 98's ever produced.

Thats not completely accurate. The first gen of 98 customs had the old thread too, I know because I have two sitting at my house right now that were bought around in early 2000. My M98 (circa 99) also has the old barrel threads. I think they switched the threads on both the M98s (that they were producing for superstores) and the 98c around 02 or so.

Wow, I missed a lot of 98 history when I was messing around with that old Pro/Carbine I had. 'Course, that was before I had the interwebs.

Thanks for the input Noely. It's not every day someone schools me on Tippmanns.

you are correct... although there ARE original m98's (with the gills) floating around that use the new style threads...

i believe it actually changed over in 2003...

it started with the serial number 495,500.

anything above it wont except any of the older style barrels.
anything below it will except ANY version of m98 threads.

they also switched it over due to people screwing in their barrels crooked...

i was thinking of something else for the 2nd generation m98s... has to do with springs and inside body differences.

Yep. Thats was I was trying to say but I might not have been clear. Walmart and other "superstores" used to sell the M98 player pack after 98C hit the market. It was a blister pack with the old M98 (with the gills) that had new barrel threads. At the same time the 98c was still only being sold through paintball specific stores.

and i thought i knew everything about the 98....

Nope, I would have skipped over it completely if I'd not had a Custom Pro fall in my lap. I was a die hard Pro/Carb man until after the A-5 came out and I was given a Custom Pro.

So really, any barrel purchased now adays should be the new threads and should fit any custom pro out there. so now i'm really confused...

Exactly.

Noely's Tippmann history lesson is right on the money the magic number for the change over was 495,501, at which point they added an extra thread to avert an alignment problem when the barrels were screwed in.

All newer barrels are backwards compatible. However, all of the older barrels will not fit the new guns, obviously, they are short one thread. There were several threads about it when it happened, a simple search should turn them up.

a simple search should turn them up.

Twould be convenient if the search feature would work. I haven't been able to search for months.

*tries out search feature* ...Point taken.

Also, good to see you around Eladamri, we don't see too many of the old hands around here anymore, it's kind of sad.

I usually drop by OT a few times a day now that I have a desk job. The tippy forum is different with all these kids and their new-fangled, non-gilled markers.

Hey, up until a couple years ago, I was a solid Pro/Carbine guy.
