The year is 1925—almost smack-dab in the middle of Prohibition, and nobody was buying what the U.S. Government and Congress were trying to do. To hell with the 18th Amendment outlawing the consumption of alcohol. New York had its “speakeasies” (a nice guise for nightclubs), Chicago had its Al Capone, but the real action was in Ohio, although everyone was distracted with the activity in the aforementioned cities.
Ohio. Innocent-looking. Farms and gardens flourishing with tomatoes, pumpkins, and tall rows of sweet corn. White, clapboard houses and picket fences. And underneath all that wholesome, American goodness, buzzed a plethora of illegal activity spurned by Prohibition and kept alive by the feuding of two of its most prominent families—the Solano Family and the Palazzi Family.
The Solanos had resided in Youngstown since the early 1900’s, and had established themselves and their “business” firmly throughout the state. Bootlegging, gambling, control of the Coal Miner’s Union, and dabbling in some other “interests” had kept the Solanos flourishing for years. Outside competitors were quickly squashed—until the Palazzi Family arrived. The Palazzis were recent immigrants to Columbiana, and their great wealth that came with them provided an immediate threat to the Solanos. Their business also encompassed the illegal alcohol trade, infiltrating the Union, and the new, brick building growing on the edge of Columbiana was surrounded with rumors of a new casino that would rival the establishment the Solanos kept so well-hidden.
