what is the number of pods needed for a normal woodsball game?

How many shots do you fire in a game? Has to be the first consideration. Some people would just need a full loader and would still have paint to spare.

You can always carry more than you need and bring some off with you, but if you shoot more than you expected, you're without an extra pod, and you're stuffed.

Work out how much you would fire in the longest game, work out how that breaks down in to a full loader and 'X' number of pods. Add one pod. You're pretty much covered for all eventualities. Obviously, if you are playing different length games throughout the day, you may want to adjust that number of pods according to game length. The shorter the game the less paint you are likely to use.

It really depends on how you shoot, and how your field runs games. My local field runs three games (about 15 minutes each), then a reload break, so I need enough paint to last for three games. I typically carry three 140 round pods and a full loader, and I usually leave the field with paint. Then again, playing pump I've walked on with 250 paintballs, given away 100, and still had paint leftover. So it really varies.

I would probably start with a 3 or 4 pod pack, and make sure you have 140 round pods. They can be found pretty cheaply, so if you need to upgrade you haven't wasted a lot of money.

Good point - if you are likely to play more than one game before going back to the staging area, that also has to be taken in to account.

Are you running a remote tank setup? That pack has an extra pouch large enough to fit an air tank.

Personally I'd go with something that has straps over the lids of the pods so that you can use them in the lid down orientation and not have to worry about the lids falling open. 140rd. pods get cumbersome if you use them vertically with the lids facing up.

If you're not using a remote line your options are wide open, packs from Empire, NXe and Redz are all excellent options. If you need the remote you'll be a bit more limited. NXe makes nice vests for scenario play, as do other companies like Flurry Industries, and COPS911.

As for how much you should carry, I'd get something that could 4+ pods. I figure with that 98C your shooting and 20 ounce CO2 or 68/45 HPA you're looking at about 800rds before you run out of air anyway. A hopper and 4 pods is about 750 balls. If you can get one of the speedball style packs this could be a 3+2 or even a 4+3 pack depending on your taste. For scenario you'd be looking for a 4+1 style.

I hope I'm not too late -

That pack from specops is AWFUL. I know, I have a similar design, but it's 6 horizontal pods with strap covers. The reason I say horrible is because of the clasp design - the pack likes to bounce around a lot, which slows you down. Additionally, you will want suspenders :P
I never used the tank pouch, but just changing from that pack to a Empire Fast Pack 06 (won in a raffle), I noticed an INSTANT change in my maneuverability and speed.

Believe me, having a wide, velcro strapped pack makes incredible differences.

Try looking at something like the Redz Flex Tex (http://www.actionvillage.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=i1JiIDYbzuRihHGcH2OiiDzSdL_786z2JyE=?Pro ductID=Y72sFAY7%2ewgAAAD3jHGlA_2y) type of design. 6 pods is a bit much normally.

For how much pods, depends on if it is scenario (carry as much as possible), or small game. I'm very conservative, and rarely touch my third pod for the games I play.

but can it hold a 72 ci tank?

It should be able to, most packs for remote setups are made to handle tanks up into the 92 and 114 range. Not that you see them very much any more, but they used to be out there.

Assuming you're running a 72ci 3000psi tank you'll be in the 700-750 range in terms of shots per fill. In theory at least you could get away with a 4+1 pack since 4 pods of 140 balls and a hopper of 180 balls is about 740 total. No need to carry more paint than you can shoot on a single air fill, at most places if you're getting your tank filled you should be close enough to the staging area to grab a couple of pods anyway.

Here's an NXe 4+1 pack (http://www.actionvillage.com/is-bin/INTERSHOP.enfinity/eCS/Store/en/-/USD/DisplayProductInformation-Start;sid=t2il2ZL2lSylP9V-3_1lcZhQPtlGEZIoWHo=?ProductID=B07AqArb6BYAAAEHs7q UoXaw) that should fit your needs quite well. Granted, they're out of stock at actionvillage, but since they're not the only people who sell NXe it's likely you could find one elsewhere.

Playing woodsball incorporates alot of things. how much you shoot, how much you can carry, how long the games are. just add these up and play with the results. I have a tippmann dagger vest. it has all the same pod holders and tank capacity, plus it has the storage for other things like a water bladder, grenade holder, radio holster and is really lightweight. check it out.

Hopefully, after six months, he's made a decision as to what harness he needs.....
