Hello, I am a new to paintball, and I am wondering what is a good gun for newbies under $150 (excluding upgrades).

Do you already have a tank, mask, hopper, etc.? If not then look at the Tippmann or the Spyder TL Plus. If you do, look at the Spyder Xtra. I have one and I like it a lot.

Well I am new at this, so I don't have any equipment yet, but I will look into the tippman and spyder tl plus.

the tippy is more durable, but can break a lot of paint. Spyders are more upgradable, but not quite as durable. Take it from someone who has used both, but moved on to "greener pastures."

spyders are more upgradeable? i dont think so buddy... you can get so much crap for 98 customs its not even funny. RT, ebolt, new powerfeeds, new bolts, rear cocking, rocket cocking, double triggers, and theres so much more stuff i cant even think of right now...

ooh... some spyders come powerfeed, every gun has new bolts, a lot of spyders come stock rear cocking, some of them come with double triggers, and spyders can be turned electro too. So, what comes stock on a spyder (ie rear cocking, double trigger, bottom line, powerfeed, etc.) you have to PAY for with a tippy? well, that doesn't sound too convenient, now does it? And any barrel made has a spyder fitting, with the exception of the flatline, which is a completely different (and bad) matter. Some tournaments (Spyder Cup) only allow Kingman guns on the field! Other fields won't allow the response trigger kit in Custom 98's. Now, I wasn't trying to be biased in my opinion, but, since people here wanted me to be more "specific", there it is. Unless you want to throw your gun across a highway and expect it to work, go with the Spyder.

maybe you forgot that spyders cost like 180 and they come with all this stuff. if you buy a tippy you can put all that stuff on and still be at 170. also, when was the last time you threw your spyder on the floor and had nothing break on it? oh okay...
also, maybe you forgot that the tippy has LP kit, and collapsible stock.
and, of course spyders come with rear cocking, tippys come with SIDE COCKING, which makes them unique.
the flatline is bad? HAHA, i can tell you already own a spyder.

Wrong again. I just posted to a topic similar to this like 2 minutes ago. The TL plus is the same price as the 98 and the compact is $40 cheaper. For a spyder, you don't need to buy kits to upgrade it. You simply get the part and put it on. No need for special hoses and whatnot. Why would you throw your gun on the floor? There is now way I would throw anything on the floor cause I was ticked off. I value my posessions and take care of them. Also I think the flatline is overhyped. Sure it adds range but I think it sacrifices accuracy. I think spyders are the second most upgradable markers out there behind cockers. Yes I do own a spyder and it has been a great marker.
Both are great markers in my opinion but I think the spyder wins out in the price/performance ratio.

spyders arent bad guns, its just i dont prefer them. i prefer the more durable, rugged, and more upgradeable tippmann. sorry, its just the way i feel. i have 2 friends with spyders, and both of them had to have theirs fixed already.
btw, if you get a new part for a gun (having to do with gas lines), chances are you are going to have to get new hoses no matter what gun your upgrading.

I get what you are saying. Some people like different guns. I have had my Xtra for a year and it has been problem free. My friends tippmann has been sputting off and on for a while now. It comes down to how people take care of their markers. You are correct on the hose changing and new fittings you may need if you get a drop forward or a reg and such. It's just something you will have to live with. If you play well with your tippmann and feel comfortable with it, keep whoopin out there on the field.:D

Alright kidos, anyway back to topic. No one recomended this, get one of those PMI Pirihna starter kits, it's got everything you need for under 150 bucks. They are just as nice as a spyder, I actually like the strip pin much better than a spyder, though they do have trigger sear problems. PMI tech service is great though, you should never have a problem.
Man M98's while they are tanks, are more complicated than my angel. Why in god's green earth would anyone design a gun that when you have to take it apart you litteraly split the gun in two so all the tiny pieces come flying out?

look into getting one of the following: spyder, pirhana, m98.
i reccomend the pirhana personally, it has a good mix of quality, looks, and upgradability.
try and shoot or handle each of the above and see which one you like the best. all of those will easily fit within your price range

please stop fighting kasplat. Just to end this, you can shorten the trigger pull for $20 at paintball stores to a better trigger pull then the tippman. Spyders are more upgradeable, better priced, but less quality than a tippman.
I currently have a jt 4.0 which you should look at the reviews for. It is an excellent gun for $105 and is exactly like the spyder shutter. I recommend that gun. buy it at ebay.
Don't get the flex masks that are on sale, unless you plan on playing seriously, tournament level, becuase they hurt a lot, and balls still break. I was wearing my friends and hit in the mouth which hurt like..... well it hurt even worse than the back of the head.
agitated hoppers are not needed for squids, newbies, unless you have already lessened your trigger pull, because i doubt you could shot that fast anyways and shaking your hopper is not that annoying to do.
get an anti-siphon tank to get more shots per fill-up.
Do not get anything from brass eagle. Do not buy a new barrel until after you used your gun.
Paintballs have different sizes, find one that suites your barrel size. I recommend proball, diablo inferno, allstar, and rp (including the jt balls manufactured by rp, forgot what they were called though but there the ones with the jt logo on them).
that's all you need to know for now. good luck.
email me if you have any problems.

Man, wrong again! Good try, though. Actually, I haven't owned either, but I have had equal experience with both of them. Which is why I said Take it from someone who has used both, but moved on to "greener pastures."
Like I said, the tippy is more durable, but that isn't the most necessary trait. The spyder looks nicer, which also isn't important. They are both upgradable, but Spyders have a few more options. Kingman seems like a very reliable company, and I have heard nothing but good things about them.
