lol its me again, i asked about the a-5 and 98 custom... now ive narrowed it down to a 98 custom i can get for about 50 -70 bucks or a bt 4 for 30-80 bucks. i used my freinds brand new bt4 and was very impressed by it but i still like the 98 custom any input would be appreciated.. also can you put a flatline on a bt 4? with an adaptor?

I think you can put a flatline on a BT-4, but you also have the option of the Apex, which BT invented.
As for BT ripping off Tippmann, meh, I disagree with that. The BT stands for Ben Tippmann, he left Tippmann and started his own company.
Is there someplace you can go and get your hands on each marker? When I bought my US-5, I was trying to decide between a 98C, a BT-4 and the US-5 (all in the same price range at my local shop). I just liked the way the US-5 felt, and that is really the biggest difference between the three. Performance wise they are all very similar.

you can put the a-5 flat line on the BT-4. but i would suggest the apex, its half the price and works twice as well.

In the 98C's favor, it has hands down more aftermarket parts than the BT. That being said, many of the parts for the 98 will fit the BT because the two markers are very similar in design. The BT is like a 98C with some minor ups already on it, such as top Picatinny rail, removable foregrip, and A5 barrel thread (There are a wider variety of better barrels made in A5 thread, but with an income restriction that may not matter to you). Also, I've heard that the BT feedport/neck is a better design than the 98C's elbow. I can't speak for the customer service at BT, however I have used the Tippmann customer service and they were very helpful as well as quick to respond.
When it comes down to it, I think the BT is a better buy because off the shelf it is cheaper than the 98C and already has some of the features 98C owners wish they had, or spend money/modify their marker to get. However there is nothing like firing the markers side by side to determine which you like the best.
If it matters to you, the BT reciever halves are milled rather than cast like the 98C reciever halves. This means a marginal increase in strength and better adherence to machining tolerances.

ok so its sunday and i think, with the input on this thread i will buy the bt. as for firing the two guns side by side .. i did one in each hand during our last game my spyderbroke so my freinds let me use both their guns. its not he best evaluative test but when i had to fall backwards and shoot the 98 custom stopped firing for some reason so i had to toss it aside and keep shooting the bt. thanks for the input!

There are so many things wrong in that post I couldn't help but laugh. How do you like the BT compared to the 98?

Really? Exactly how did Ben Tippmann of BT "rip Tippmann off"?
Man, if my Cousin ripped me of like that I'd kick him in the nuts! coughsarcashcough
Anyway, I would go with an A5 instead of any of the above. I mean they have come down in cost to the point where a basic, vanilla semi-auto A5 is the "go to" gun for the budget minded woods-ball/mil-sim enthusiast.
I mean, Ive seen brand new A-5's going for $154.95 on Ebay not too long ago. Granted, it didnt come with anything but the semi-auto marker and whatever stock parts which were included, but you typically end up throwing out the extras in "package deals" anyway.
So for ~$25-$30 more then your typical price for a new, bare bones 98C you can have a much better marker. Its rather hard to pass that kind of performance increase for such a small amount of extra cost unless you are REALLY hard up for cash... and if thats the case you have the wrong hobby to begin with.

Ben tippmann didn't rip off tippmann. Ben and his bro built tippmann and he wanted to keep the company all american built. So he made the company BT which stands for Ben Tippmann.

Umm I think I heard somewhere that Tippmann sued BT so they changed there name to Battle Tested.
Why do people think that companys rip other companys off just because they come out with a simalar item and everyones like they ripped them off. Last timed I checked 32 Degrees has a marker that looks just like a Spyder. I dont hear anyone saying that they ripped Kingman off.

BT makes Tippmann clones. Just like the US-5. Most inline blowbacks are Tippmann clones. Tippmann doesn't have a patent saying no one else can make an inline blowback; they just did it first.

Good God calm down dude, I dont remember where I heard it from so no reason to get pissy about it.
Also why on the BT website does it say Battle Tested.

well lol this thread went off track.. but i ended up buying a bt 16 for $50 and it works real good the best part in my opinon is that the cockin handel doesn't move when it fires and its pretty much sealed from and loose dirt getting inside

That's copied from the A-5. I hear bad things about the BT-16. I recommend you keep a close eye on it when you're doing maintenance, and do maintenance often.

Oh yes.
I owned the BT-16 "Tactical" (still do, it’s in the closet where it belongs). :(
The thing started to fall apart after 3 games. In fact the valve spring RUSTED TO THE VALVE! I can’t even get it out.
The before that (I had the whole BT-16 Tactical. The AR-15 mock up version, AKA the "expensive" model) the flash suppressor/sight/sling connection point broke off the tip of the barrel and spun freely 360* around AND up/down the length of the barrel's shaft, making both the sight and the sling useless... and I am afraid to say that these are just a few of the problems I had with the thing.
And then you had the fact that (at least at the time 2 years ago) there was JACK SQUAT in terms of aftermarket mods. The most complicated "mod" available, was a bottom line ASA, so you don’t have to screw the tank/remote coil directly into the tombstone...
... it was also PAINFULLY slow in the rate of fire department, the trigger SUCKED, I had a new leak somewhere at some point in time EVERY TIME I played after the second game, it chopped paint, etc... etc... etc...
I DO have to say though, that the BT-16 Tactical did a VERY impressive VISUAL job of looking like an AR-15. I mean, if you saw it from a distance, even someone who owns a real AR-15 would be hard pressed to tell that it's not real. Even the cocking mechanism (the T-style charging handle) was done properly (and was the coolest part of the marker IMO). This in NO MEANS makes up for the lack in quality, however, and the severely lacking parts department (both in house and after market).
Bottom line is that I would NEVER recommend this marker to anyone. That’s why I didn’t sell it. It wouldn’t be fair to whoever bought it!

i would say go with the c98, as it has more after market parts , the cyclone i like more than the rip clip, and you can get a c98 up to 30 bps and the bt will max around 25 bps.
what i like about the bt the most are the mounts and removable front grip. but all in all they are both great markers and you cant go wrong!

I just got a BT-4 and it came with an APEX barrel, double trigger, and a rip clip, and this gun is amazing especially with the APEX. I would say go with the BT-4 because it is a really good gun and worth all the money. Both are really good guns but my BT-4 is electric and 98C`s are mechanical. And get the APEX barrel over the flatline you get more range, it is less paint picky, and it is a lot more versatile. APEX over flatline, and BT-4 over 98C
