View Full Version : Surviving with a 98

If you happen to play a 98 custom without a response or e-trigger in anything but a woodsball game...good luck.
I played a course this past weekend and most of the "scenario" fields were being rented-out. This forced us onto glorified speedball fields where the shortcomings of my particular 98 were very exagerated. Obviously you get what you pay for. But without that response trigger I was terribly overmatched. I'll probably remove the stock from now on, and since I play with a remote I should have more flexibility.
But outside of a good hopper (I play a cyclone) and good paint...I don't see any other solutions.
Any ideas?:pissed:

What problems were you actually having? 98Cs may not be really built for speedball, but you should be able to hold your own. Speedball is as much about communication as it is about your equipment.
I will agree that the stock is going to be more of a hindrance in speedball. You need to be able to tuck tight to a bunker, and a stock will make that more difficult. That's why I went with a folding stock on my US-5, I can always fold it out of the way if I need to. Also, since Tippys are inline blowbacks, they do tend to be very long, especially when compared to other speedball markers. I can put a 12" barrel on my cocker, and it is still shorter (from the grip frame) than my US-5 with an 8" barrel. Adding a stock to an already long marker just makes you more of a target.
So if you were really looking to 'speedballify' your 98C, I would probably go with a good hopper, a good short barrel, and maybe an e-grip. You really shouldn't need the e-grip though, because high rate of fire just isn't that important, especially for walk-ons.

THE GUN DOES NOT MAKE THE PLAYER!!!!!!! i played a speedball game last weekend with my pump autococker using 12 grams and a 50 round hopper. i was one of the 3 last men standing and my teammate got the flag just as i got hit, i only fired a pods worth of balls and they all counted. learn to use what you have, i learned to play with a splatmaster and a phantom. accuracy by volume means nothing, placing one or two balls on someone shows skill and class.

Speed ball is a great game style. However it and a tippmann 98 dont go well together. I dont even think they can be used in the same sentence.
However thats really no excuse becasue the sport is all player and very little about what gun you use.
(When you go up against people with A-5's x-7's diablos and spyders in one match with a tippmann sl-68 II you will know what it feels like to be out-matched -good times good times-)

You know what's really awesome...being good AND having a good gun. :D
Really though, speedball is less gun and more movement and timing. You need to know how to do things and when and where to do them much more than you need a gun that's spitting out obscene rates of fire. I will say that a Tippmann gun doesn't exactly help in speedball, but it's not the biggest factor by a long shot.
If you want to play speedball you need to learn how and when to move before you worry about anything else. Then communication, I say that as second b/c most walk-on groups aren't going to communicate no matter how hard you try to make them. Then gun skills, snap shooting, reloading, running and shooting. Really, out there amongst the big balloons, it's much more of a mind game than anything else. The guy who has the most knowledge about what's going on and how to deal with it and can then interpret that information and respond accordingly and effectively is going to win. Pretty much regardless of what he's using to actually shoot the paint.
Two random asides:
I hate all of you who have SL-68's, THERE, I said it.
Also, according to hummerking I have no class b/c I tend to shoot people more than once or twice. I think I might maybe take exception to that...but not too much.

lol... i've had just as much success with my ariakon overlord pistol, its actually sometimes more fun to play with a marker you can't walk at 14+bps. helps you play better.

Agreed completely. But I'm not a big fan of pistols. Had some bad luck with every one I've used. I greatly prefer to go stock-class pump.

I have to agree with Corrupted355 a little about how funny this is. I'm pretty brand new to this sport, but like in most sports its all about the player. My first outing I bought a Spyder Compact for $30. Its the Java edition (blowback-semi, 4bps depending on the trigger finger) totally stock and after a quick cleaning and test fire my cousins and I went to a speedball field. My one cousin let his girlfriend use his brand new ion and rented the field's 98 (gun in question). Ironically, the 98 and my spyder ended up being the front guns. We lit kids up. Kids were walking on with ions and Epiphanys and didn't stand a chance. Everyone on my team worked as a team, we covered, took bunkers and won games. Long story short, I think it boils down to how well and how willing you are work with team-mates. I wouldn't give up on the 98, as long as it still shoots balls I think you will be alright.
Wow. That was pretty long... but its my first post...

i've never played with a remote, but if it hinders you from switching hands in any way i would get rid of it. if you normally keep your gun in your right hand and to shoot out the left, it would be very bad to still use it with your right side, it gives a huge target!

Quick question, Coenen Why do you hate us Sl-68 II people ive never done anything to you.
Also if your afraid that you gun cant crank out the bps for speed-ball work on your snap shots and make them count. (working on your agility wouldnt be a bad idea eaither.)

I don't find the speed being a handicap at all. It's mostly the fact that they're long as hell that annoys me.
If you're going to play speedball, don't use a remote. Just run the tank on the gun. I'd also remove the cyclone and just use a regular hopper.

I greatly prefer to go stock-class pump.
I have a phantom and i love it! ive seen some crazy ppl who do VERY well with pumps on speedball against ions, angels and i think it was a freestyle or dmx or something i dont remember 3v3
1 pumper, 1 angel, 1 w.e. vs 2a5s etrig and an ion. . . it was fun =p

welll as repeated before it goes to show that it doesnt matter what gun you use. the things that really matter is the skill, and ability of the player. Of course the gun has to also be able to shoot straight...
there is NO reason why anyone with a 98c would get severely pwned unless he is a noob, the ppl are just too good which i would doubt, or it was justa bad day. i dono its not like ure playing with a blade or something. . .
oh and i think i discussed this on a previous thread, but yah i mean the 98c is a high end gun! i just saw it in the tippmann website they call it high end =p LOL

Pump play is a lot of fun. I haven't gotten to do it lately, but playing with my PGP is some of the most fun I've ever had in paintball.
First people are looking at you like you're crazy, then you're blowing their faces off and they're looking at you a bit differently.

To this day woodwball is where my soulk is at, but i recently started playing with my gun and did a serious overhaul upgrade. E-Trigger with WAS and a cyclone feed system with upgrades to teh cyclone. as well as a techt fang trigger with adjustable points of contact.
needless to say i did very well with my 12" J&J and got most of the regulars out that day.
for me its a gun thats good for the best of both worlds of paintball. if you think its too heavy, stop whining about it and get a different gun.
its also the most customizable as well.

i dono why lol but i like my guns to feel like something. . . ppl may call it heavy, but i seriously dont feel right with an ion.

I feel your pain. I play with a vm-68, because everything else feels flimsy and or too light.
