Hey everyone

I'm new to this site, my friend told me to visit here to found out most of the info I was looking for paintball. I recently bought a Tippmann A-5 Sniper kit from ebay and I was wondering how effective it is compared to the X-7 Tippmann. I mean I like tippmann because it's like your basic starting marker I would say and I'm just getting into paintball. The only reason I didn't get the X-7 is because I heard the feeder chops the paintballs inside and also eats up alot of CO2.

You can't go wrong with a Tippmann. They are great starter guns and can be upgraded to suit the player, I think it is the most customizable marker on the market. As far as air usage between the a5 and x7, the x7 should be a little better on air than the a5 simply because it has a quick exhaust piston housing. Other than that they are pretty much the same. The x7 is an a5 with cosmetic add-ons.
If you play woodsball you will be plenty satisfied with the a5. Almost everyone I play woodsball with has either a 98c or an a5, one has an x7, and few have other brands.
As you progress as a player you can upgrade your a5 to suit your type of play.

I see, where do you play at ?

Pretty much what Beaver said. Quoting someone here X7 is an A5 with a tux. They pretty much have the same things inside (internals) except for a few things. So other than that you are good to go.

I bough a kit because I don't know how to do any upgrades or maintenance on it and I didn't want to mess it up. Well that's good to here that there isn't much difference between the two and I think i might have saved a houndred on bucks getting the A5.

The A5 is an excellent marker and I suggest upgrading the cyclone feed on it with at least a Vortex Ratchet from: http://www.techtpaintball.com/vortexmod.html
With that part, your Tippmann will be alot more reliable since the stock plastic ratchets are usually the first part to break.

Maintaining a Tippmann is as easy as it gets, especially the a5. Most upgrades(the ones I've done) are almost as simple to install as the marker is to maintain. Best thing to do is download a manual on your marker from tippmann.com, it is easier to follow(see small parts) than the small manual that comes with your marker. Field strip your marker according to manual and clean and lube accordingly. The thing I found the most helpful are fellow Tippy owners here. No matter what the question or problem, you search the forums and your bound to find an answer or solution. If you can't find it with a search just post and ask. There are many members here who will be more than willing to offer advice or help.

but then again its your opinion

That would be me.

You're technically right here, but Cockers are more for tinkerers and guys who love to get their hands dirty. For the guy who loves modifying the marker in the tool shop more than he does actually playing with it.

Tippmanns have more bolt-on mods. Stuff that anyone can put on. Which is probably what our friend here is looking for.

k i understud that but technically cockers have more parts in general thats the point i was trying to get out but tippmanns have good cosmetic ups. i personaly want spec. ops to come out with longbow for a side feed cocker or a 98
but would be cool if they had a longbow for center feed cockers too but 21 rds.

I think the next one I will get is the X-7 but someone told me about getting a spyder.

If you have an A-5 an like it, don't buy an X-7 or spyder. There are a lot of markers out there, and if you are buying something else, I would recommend that you move up to something high end. I started with my US-5 (basically an A-5), and when the time came to buy another marker, I did it to buy something different. I can only shoot one gun at a time, and having two that are very similar didn't make sense. So I then bought the Hammer (which is a pump) and then the Autococker (which is a high-end mechanical gun), both of which work and feel very different when compared to my US-5.

Also, play for a bit before you start worrying about upgrades. Paintball is a very fun game, and doesn't necessarily need lots of expensive toys to be fun. And every dollar you spend on something you don't really need is money that could be spent playing, and getting out there and playing will do much more for you than a fancier new toy. Don't get me wrong, I like the fancier toys, just don't get caught in the trap of buying something 'just because'.

Dude, that's creepy. It's like you're me, but in a parallel universe. I had an A-5, then went to a Maverick, then picked up a Prostock.

Unless you've got a large disposable income. In that case, by all means, buy whatever new gizmo you want. And don't be afraid to spread the love. If you need a place to start, I've been drooling over the AGD Tac One for a few months now. :D

went from blade to saber to 96 autococker then to tippmann just to mess with as a scenario gun and still using the cocker but tippmanns are pretty much better than a blade or saber
B.E. sends creeps down my spine every time they make a new marker
just the crappiness will scare

Man, have I got some great designs for you to look at. One's coaxial, so the barrel is actually inside the pressure chamber, making it super compact. Another is completely semi-automatic sporting an articulating barrel and a five round, automatically revolving magazine that works using Pneumag and Autococker parts and draws inspiration from a clicky pen. My favorite, though, is the multi-stage acceleration one. I'm REALLY interested to see if that one'd work. The stage triggers are gonna be tricky.

A five round revolver LAW? That I would love to see.

Unfortunately for me, my local field has a very strict 'no homemade LAW' rule, enforced even more now that someone's blew up on them. The guy wasn't seriously hurt, but was hurt enough for people to think that it was a bad idea.

That, my friend.... sucks. There's no way I could afford a JCS MKX, so I'd never get to be the Demo guy. Besides, my stuff shoots farther, more accurately, and uses less air.

I just got my tippmann in the mail last week and field test at cousins paintball and it preformed pretty well. I tested the fire of my paintball marker by 334 FPS. I've learned alot from exp paintball players about upgrading my marker. I've already learned how to take it apart and learned the insides of it. I install my double trigger and put back together my gun.

Lenny17
05-19-2008, 09:06 AM
Whoa there - 334fps is TOO HIGH. Goggles are only rated to 300, most fields ask for 280. Sure, you might get extra range out of it, but I don't want to lose an eye because you want extra range.

Other than that - glad to know that you are learning a lot. Knowing how it works can make a world of difference.

Well I never got close enough to them to really hurt them with it i mostly stayed kinda in the back. This was woodsball but it was fun till the people with tourney guns came in and made it difficult.

Corrupted355
05-19-2008, 03:59 PM
Doesn't matter. Faster than 300 fps is hard enough to break fingers. There's a reason that fields ask you to rate your speed. Even if you're not technically playing on a sanctioned field with refs and chronos, you should still play safe. You're gonna feel like crap if you break someone's hand or shatter someone's lens.

hey corrupted355 im new and im wondering how to turn down the fps setting.

Corrupted355

There is an allen screw in the right side of the gun, just above the Cyclone's horizontal tube. It's recessed inside the gun. Turn that screw clockwise, and the velocity goes down. Turn it counter-clockwise, and the velocity goes up. My friend uses the mnemonic "tighten down, loosen up" to remember it.

You do want to be careful when tightening, though. The allen screw itself is metal, but the thing it's screwing into is just plastic. If you crank down on it too hard, it's very easy to strip out.

EDIT:
Sorry, I just noticed that you've got a 98. Your method for adjusting the velocity will be the same, but your screw is in the left side of the marker about halfway up the length of the gun, pointing at a downward angle.

...then to tippmann just to mess with as a scenario gun...

thats what i'm doing with my 98ACT, when i'm done with it i'll put pics up but here is the list of mods that are going on it
-CAR Stock (installed)
-BSA Red Dot Scope (installed)
-14'' J&J Ceramic Barrel (installed)
-Custom Hopper Riser (still in the works)
-Custom M16 Sight Riser and Front Sight (near completion)
-Custom Drop Forward (complete and installed)
-Custom Laser Pointer Sight (complete and installed)

all of the custom parts i am making myself and the ones that are done need to be painted yet as they are bare aluminum. my school has a metal shop and they are actually letting me build this stuff, cool eh?

I agree over 300fps is a little over the top. The second time I played I got flanked by a guy with a seriously hopped up Autococker from the left and took two shots to the ribs with Marblizers. Needless to say I didn't even check to see if the balls broke, just yelled I'm out and got the hell out of there (he was roughly 35 feet away.
I had two bruises the size of my fist each for the better part of a week. The next time we played the guy brought a Chrono to help me set my flatline and we checked his Autococker for sh@ts and giggles. 345 fps! We all voted to check all the guns and make him use his 98 custom or turn that ***** down. My Flatty is set around 275 but will still hurt someone up close, so remember safety first, and call out surrender if you're within 20 feet. If they don't surrender like the poor ******* I shot in the back of the head yesterday from 15 feet, then its on them and not you.

Links to myspace only work if other people have myspace.

To post pics you need to open an account on something like flickr or photobucket, and upload it there. From there you can get link it to here.
