View Full Version : Challenge

I have a challenge for all you Tippmann owners. A while back, I was asked if I could take apart and reassemble my A-5, all while completely blindfolded. I surprised myself by being able to do it. Everything came apart: receiver, cyclone, E-grip, valve... anything that could come apart.
I laid out my tools, put on my blindfold, and one hour and thirty six minutes later, I had the exact same thing sitting in front of me that I'd started with. I challenge you to beat me.
As a disclaimer, I will take no responsibility for anything you do wrong because of your hampered visual acuity, including those trigger springs that like to fly off and hide under the entertainment unit. Please try not to hurt yourselves either. I do have one piece of knowledge for you, which I picked up during this little escapade: flathead screws are annoying when you can't see.

Thats just the powertube and the valve inside.
I believe its the entire valve (removing it from the powertube and disassembling it).

Yea, I want the cup seal sitting on the table.
I consider the A-5 and the 98 about equally difficult, because the A-5's easier to take apart, but it's also got a cyclone to disassemble.

I have the cyclone on my 98C.
When you say completly disassembled, do you also mean the pins holding cyclone pistion and ratchet together .
Corrupted355
05-28-2008, 07:52 PM
Since you've got a cyclone on a 98, I'll let you get away with keeping the ratchet and rod together as one piece. You've got to deal with those trigger springs and that front sight that I don't. Although to be fair, the tombstone latch was a massive PITA; that thing alone took me ten minutes to get back on.

Thats fine but I have a way to easily secure the springs, especially the front sight one.
Hopefully I'll have the time to easily beat your record later this week when I'm not so tired from 10 hours of school bus duty.

Thats not a problem. I've been disassembling and assembling it for the last 7 years.
Chances are, I won't be able to do it on a table but on my bed and putting all the parts into a small bin in my lap. Should make it a little more difficult.

May I suggest not videotaping it? You may not want videographic evidence of that much swearing. I've been doing my A-5 for quite a few years too, but I was honestly surprised by how hard it actually was. Sure, you might know exactly how many turns of the screw it takes to tighten the main R/T bolt to line up the banjo fitting, but getting that screwdriver to find the slot in the flathead is going to require you to summon finesse that you didn't know you possessed.
But if you two are the only ones going to try, I'm going to be very disappointed in the new crop of Tippmann owners.

It should not be too hard, I don't look at what I'm doing half the time since I'm usually watching a movie lol.

and yah i wont video tape it. dont make that much tiem to kill. i will be honest and tell u how much time it took
Corrupted355
05-28-2008, 08:52 PM
Macroline or not: ASA's gotta come off, and in order to take the valve out, you're gonna need to pull that fitting out of there anyway. Macroline just adds a step for you while simultaneously adding another smallish part to the pile of stuff you've got to identify by feel.
And just so you guys know, assembly is probably gonna take at least twice as long as it did to tear everything down.

how about with one contact in and not looking. I can take apart my custom pro--including the ak 7 kit and every part of the damn thing and reassemble in less than 2.5 mins. Did it about 20 times to find out what the prob was with the gun over the last week.
and ditto on the spring for the trigger group. dog picked it up and chewed on it while i was on all fours trying to locate.

I've always said to myself that I can take my A-5 apart blindfolded because I know it so well... but my valve is seriously a PITA.
When I find a good time, I will take your challenge.
ICU117
05-29-2008, 12:21 PM
Gonna have to try that. Although I haven't disassembled an A5 in a while, and I don't think my friend will let me borrow his... My brother won't let me do it with his E98c. And I certainly can't do it blindfolded to my shocker.

gave up at 2 hours and 22 minutes trying to get the shell back on because i had taken out all the parts to the e-grip and couldnt get it back in without pinching something.
i know, im disappointed in myself too, im surprised i didnt lose any parts though.
Whats weird is, after a COMPLETE teardown, my 98 custom shot its first ball at exactly 280fps even after taking out and putting back in the velocity screw. I know, im good. Yes, i did the valve and everything.

Yeah i think if you converted your marker back to a mechanical before you started the challenge it would be more fair, most people's seem to be mechanical. And yeah putting the left receiver half on the e-grip in the 98 is the worst.. the first time i did it took me about 15 mins just for that.
So i would say another exclusion would be the e-grip and all it's parts.

I did about a 90% teardown and assembly of a fairly basic 98 Custom in about 25 minutes.

I did my A-5 with the E-grip in, and I even had the fittings in for the R/T. Taking stuff off beforehand is cheating.

I think I can one-up (or at least tie) you on that one. Replace the valve o-ring in an A-5 with a spare bottle o-ring during the final battle of a scenario while the building you're in is under siege, and do it in less than two minutes. If I hadn't gotten that marker back together when I did, I'd have been in a world of hurt.

Yeah, E-Cocker is about as high tech as I'll go. They built stuff better back before everything had batteries in it. Although, I do have a Cocker that's got a Warp on it. All told, that thing takes a total of up to five nine-volts to operate. But it looks bionic and I love it.
