View Full Version : 98 Custom + SP Progressive Barrel. Something not quite right.

Greetings,

I purchased a Smart Parts Progressive Barrel for my 98 Custom. I'm running into a couple problems.

1) My stock-barrel has much thicker threading then the SP Progressive Barrel. I was afraid the SP barrel wouldn't screw in. However, the SP barrel still screws into the barrel hole. Weird thing is it only takes a half turn to secure the barrel into the barrel hole. Is that normal? It seems sturdy.

2) With the SP barrel installed, I can shoot the marker, but the hammer gets stuck in the forward position. I noticed that the "Front-Bolt" gets stuck inside the SP barrel, when I trying shooting. The Stock barrel shoots fine, and the hammer resets back to the back-position.

Did I buy the wrong barrel? Can I sand the inside of the SP barrel so that the front-bolt isn't so snug inside the SP barrel? Is the "front-bolt" even suppose to enter the barrel as I shoot?

I took the front-bolt in one hand, and the barrels in another hand. I ran the front bolt inside the rear of each barrel. The stock barrel shows little friction, the SP barrel shows much more friction.

Any comments or suggestions would be much appreciated.

Much Thanks,

Esoin

Tippmann has changed the thread on the 98 in the past. That maybe your problem but it sounds to me like you bought the wrong thread

I always get this backwards, so somebody's probably gonna correct me. But I believe that older M98's cannot accept newer 98C barrels. There's a cutoff according to your serial number where the change took place, but I have no idea what that number is.

Like I said, I always get it backwards. I do the same thing installing small block Chevy distributors. It's gotten to the point where during an engine build, the guys I'm working with will invariably ask which direction I'd install the distributor, and then install it 180* from my recommendation. It always fires right up.

ooooooh now knowing your a chevy man.......... i wish i had listened when my uncles buddy told me exactly what he did other than boring, stroking, tuned port injection, port and polish, and a lil centrifugal SC to push 450HP thru my old 4.3 V6 :D all i really remeber is the 4.3 is a 350 with 2 cylinders cut off so the 383 stroker piston kit works :sulk: i loved that S10 all i needed was the 5.11 gears instead of the 3.08 that came in it.
