I will be buying an AutoCocker here in a little bit and I have heard that a barrel kit is the best thing for closed bolt markers. i have read some reviews on kits but was wondering which ones are really good. The ones that have really caught my eyes are the Sceptor and JandJ Edge. Which one of those two or anyother ones you have to suggest in the Price range of about 130.

Also are inserts or backs better?

My top 3 are Hammerhead, Matchstick, DW Fibur. Most barrel kits are good. If getting a edge, id suggest goin on pbn and buying a old style (aluminum backs and front) used for like 40-50 bucks. The sceptor/revolver kit is also great, they tend to run in 50-80 range.

I've seen the old empire kit (not the scepter style one) NIB on ebay for around $75. Can't really go wrong with that. It shoots awesome, and for the price, I doubt you'll do much better.

I have the Edge Elite kit and with 5 backs and 3 fronts for $100 it was a hard deal to beat. I haven't used any others, so I don't have much comparison, but I can say that the Edge gets the job done. I've found that I actually like having the three fronts (I thought it was unnecessary at first), when my local field is overgrown and bushy it's nice to be able to pop a longer front on there to get through the undergrowth.

As for backs vs. inserts, I think that's up for debate, as they both have their upsides and downsides. Kits with backs seem to be cheaper, and you don't have as many alignment issues as you can with inserts. That being said, if you swap to a different marker, you only need to buy a new back, not an entirely new set of backs. When I bought my cocker, I needed a new kit, since my US-5 and Hammer are spyder threaded. I couldn't get away with just a new back. Then again, I could buy another Edge kit for $100, and have barrels for both markers, rather than spending $40 for a new back and not having a barrel for my backup.

Scepter inserts align pretty well, better then Freaks i'd say. The Shift probably has great align meant too from what little i've heard and it being from MD.

Inserts vs. Backs...

Insert kits are great as Lenny said that if you ever switch to a different threaded gun you only need to buy one new back over a set of new ones. Insert can have alignment issues sometimes and they are more prone to possible damage and denting then solid backs. One thing you do have going for you though is that you're getting it for a cocker, thus you can use the kit on pretty much every other high-end gun if you upgrade.

As for kits:

Solid backs: Used Pipe, J&J Edge, Redz Pepperstick, or yes a Hammerhead.
Inserts: Old style Scepter, DW Fibur, Shift if you can manage the extra $10, or if not maybe an Orbium if yo can find one used or something.

i have both a Matchstick And a Freak system, and, believe it or not, i have a straight rifled 16 inch CMI Cocker barrel and it outshoots them both for 1/5 the price of a full freak kit. got it iff ebay for 26 bucks with shipping, and the spread on both my 05 cyborg and 07 infinity legend is rediculously tight and the range is aout 25% better than a Freak and Matchstick.

my 16" CMI on my hammer shoots pretty amazing, not as good as my hammerhead or matchstick, then again thats comparing barrels I use on my high end guns with compressed air vs a low end pump on compressed air :P

Ok so I can only find the shift for 215 dollars. Does anyone know where it can be found cheaper? That one has really caught my eye.

Also would it be better just to buy three different 1 piece barrels or a Kit?

Where the heck are they being sold for $215? Ranjerz (http://store.ranjerzproshop.com/macdevshiftkit.html) has them for $140.

Here.http://www.sckpaintball.com/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=146

Thanks for the link. Also when you use backs and it says a 14 inch tip does that mean a 14 inch barrel or just the tip?

http://store.ranjerzproshop.com/em7pcbakit.html is this a pretty good kit?

Ah ok well that store isn't in the US but New Zealand i think. So that would explain the so called price difference. 14" tip makes the entire barrel 14", the tip is not 14" by itself.

I see that would make since on the price difference. Thanks I thought that the barrel would just be 14.

Is there any reason you cant pick your thread type on that site? does that barrel only come in cocker threads or what?

I think the Shift only comes in cocker threads.

The Shift is available only in Cocker threads right now. I keep hearing that others will be made soon.

You also might be able to pick up a used MatchStick kit for pretty cheap.
