View Full Version : How Tuff is YOUR Tippmann?

ok guys,
i know tippmanns' are tough, rugged, but i would like to hear some stories where ur tippmann was under the most strain a marker can be put under, and still work perfectly.
and if someone could answer this for me: a couple of months ago we we're playing a game in the woods when it started to rain. we didn't let the rain stop us and played for like 30 more min. nothin happened to any of our guns, (3 tippmanns and one 32deg) but i was wondering will rain affect the gun, other than rust? its not like i pic rainy days to play, i was just wondering if, caught in a shower, will it hurt the 98c??
thanks and i wanna hear some stories!!!

this one isn't to big but, my friends 98c fell off a spindle and landed into the sandy rocky ground, 5 feet below. gun worked perfect. the same day, we had two guys w/ spyders play w/ us. they both had to leave b/c their "Super duper shiny nice spyder" couldn't handle the sand. none of the tippmanns had a problem, even the one that fell from 5ft onto the sandy, rocky soil.

Where we play in the desert, there's a bunch of washes with bridges over them. I was up on top of the bridge shooting one of my friends hiding behind a saguaro on the edge of the wash. Well, I wasn't in that great of a spot, so I sat up, and started to run to the other end of the bridge. I slipped on some sand and fell down. I wanted to use my hands to break my fall, so I tossed my tippmann out in front of me. It hit the side of the concrete guard rail hard and bounced off. (I wasn't worried about my gun, I was concerned about the co2 tank rupturing and sending high speed shrapnel into my head.) So I ran over, picked it up and started to shoot again. Only thing wrong with it was the paint was a little scratched.

Well, before I bought my original 98 off on of my friends,I heard that he threw the gun throught the air to make a distraction. I am not sure if it really happened but with the amount of scratches that are on the gun i would say it is quite possible.

My favorite local Field run right along side a river. This was when I just got my 98, and the only upgrade I have was the Flatline barrel. When the river is low you can run along side it all the way to the end of the course. I have done it many times with great success. As I was running, when I slipped on a wet rock and fell hard on some rocks and watched my 98 disappear in the water. I pulled it out of the water, dried it off with my shirt the best I could, dry fired it a few times, switched out the paint with some of my extra ammo, and it worked great. I wish I could say I went on to win the game, but a few people heard me dry firing and lit me up like a Christmas tree.

I would have felt like a synonym for a donkey after I spent all that money on it and it broke.

Well I cant say ive put gun through as much crap as these other guys but i was playing at night and i tripped over a root sticking outta the ground and the barrel went into the ground really hard. After all the dirt got outta it the gun shot liek it was brand new.

once, when my gun was still stock and was smaller then it is now at the break i ran way out left along the tape, running hard and fast i realized my gun was slowing me down, i took and threw it into the bunker ahead of me and slid in belly first, it sounded like it hit hard but when i got to it i picked it up and started shooting back the other team, it was shooting like nothing happened to it

they are built solid and tough
i love my tippman

Well, although I try hard to take care of my equipment so it will return the favor, there have been a few instances where my beloved Tippmann line of products had an opportunity to take a giant crap, and did not.
First time I saw the durability hold up was in '88. We were playing at a field in June (woods of course) and it was about 105 outside. No wind. The kind of heat that can wear on a guy, and we had been playing a team of overweight bigmouths. They were using PGP's, Alligators and one guy had a standard Rapide. Well, they had been sumarrily put down several times by the 62 cal hell that was the SMG. After completion of one game, we were all resting around a spool in the shade, using it as a table. One fatass who was bleeding from the last game had enough and grabbed one by the barrel and tried to smash it on the edge of the table. This was an early external line one, and it hit right on the line. After he was pummeled of disgracing the holy grail, and dismissed from his ***-kicking lesson, we inspected the damage. The line was bent in towards the reciever, but on trying to fire it-not one glitch.
Second personal experience- I had an SL-68 under the seat of my worktruck for about 6 months. I went to clean out the truck and found it. I had traded it on the field one day, and just forgot about it being there. So I put it on the seat and decided to try it out the next day. Not one problem. Like a tank that thing.
Third - I was playing on some land near Van-Alystne with creeks running through it with about 10 foot drop-offs into the water. I was the last guy on my team, and the three remaining opponents knew right where I was. I was not about to surrender (being 4th generation Texan) so I jumped off into the creek. The mud I sank into went to my knees almost, and the T98 went all the way under water. Crap-o-matic is right. By the time I had fought out of the mud, the gun had gone under and into the mud twice more. I was very concerned that I was going to be pummeled by the guys when they hit that ridge and saw me floundering around down there. I knew that ALOT of water had to have made into the breech and hopper. Well, when I made it to the wall of the creekbed is when they spotted me. I fired madly at them, with water and mud blasting out the end of that stock tube. But by the 4th or 5th shot, it was shooting paintballs like wildfire at them. They would not shoot straight for all the crap in the barrel i'm sure, but it was shooting none the less. I did not hit one of them. I had 9 welps on me when they finished with me. I went up, dried her off, took the hopper loose and squeegied the barrel clean, dried the hopper out, and played another 2 hours with no problem. Sorry guys thats all I got.

Playing some outlaw woodsball, I decided to climb a tree to pick off the opposing team. It was all going fine until I dropped my M98...from about 10 feet up!! It smashed against a big rock and made a horrible sound. I was sure it was done. I climbed down to inspect the damage. It was pretty scrathed up, but still in one piece. I picked a tree trunk about 5 inches wide and 100 feet away and squeezed the trigger. Nailed it. 2 more shots, 2 more hits. Aside from the scratches, it worked like new!!! I dare anyone with any other brand marker to try the same!!

This is probably not the right thread for this reply.....

I started in 1987. In '88 I played with 5 other crazies in East Texas - the stories were so unbelievable I won't even bother here. We played other teams there, until our friend Jeff Miller died in a motorcycle accident. Besides, most people on here tend to get offended at red-blooded American men. Most men nowadays that "fit" into society are really whittled down lapdogs to employers and women. Not me. Most women are tricked into thinking they want "Good men" when in fact most do not. I come home every day after work, I dont drink, I help my kids with homework. I dont even ask if they want to participate in soccer or football because if they want to, they will ask me. My 6 yr old plays paintball with me and my friends and co-workers. Be true to yourself, God, and your passions. Find a woman, not a girl. Women know what is important in life. Girls are silly ignorant fools. Know the difference and you will be happy my good friend. Paintball brings out men in all males. The ones who use the excuses involving their female companions to avoid paintball will seriously regret it inside.

Not near as much money as heart. I don't know, maybe 4k. But I sold alot of the ones that I hated, just kept the good ones that never let me down. I just got through putting an expansion chamber and macroline on my flatlineT98. I likee. It got all scratched up 2 weekends ago in the back of my truck. It was all muddy and crap, so everyone just threw their guns and gear in the back of my truck, the field we play on is about 1/2 mile back in the woods. Oh well. Works fine.

All my friends bought spiders and black draguns... EVERY game they are fixing problems and cursing the day they bought their guns... But my buddies 68 (My old gun) works GREAT everytime! He has not oldied or cleaned it since I sold it to him 3 YEARS AGO and it works with no problems. Has not even broke a ball. Hi. I use a Spyder. What's up with the attitude?

Well....I'm not gonna argue, Tippmanns are built rock solid. however....who says Spyders aren't?

Well....I loaned my electronic shutter to a newbie one day....thought he might like to see what a difference having your own gun can make over the rentals....he went out there, promptly picked up a handful of paintballs/sand and dumped it into the hopper. After he finished playing he told me it was crap cuz it wouldn't shoot. He had run sand through the ENTIRE internals. EVERYTHING. Valve, reciever, barrel, hopper, feed.....you name it it had sand. I took her home...carefully cleaned her with gasoline and rinsed it off real well (yes, Spyder under water, thank God I took the e-frame off)....and tried it out. Perfect. Not a leak. No problems. I take care of my girl and she performs as well as any of the higher end guns, as I am well aware a Tippmann is capable of too. Saw one the other day....flatline, RT double trigger, LP.....EVERY single mod and upgrade on the thing. Only problem was the flatline wasn't too accurate at long range, but the RoF made up for that. The balls still didn't break though, but that's not the Tippy's fault.

Spyders and Tippmanns do the same thing, just a bit differently. Some people prefer easy access to internals for more game time. Some people prefer internals hidden away so they are more rugged, to allow for more game time. Either way, Spyder or Tippmann, take care of it and it will take care of you.

I agree that tippmanns are tough because I tried to run it over with a car but i missed. I can't drive that good cuz im 14 but anyway. They are gret rec and scenario guns. Yes they can be used for tourneys but I don't see many doing it around here. The higher end guns are not built as tough but they can have better convieniecnes. They are built lighter because of the smaller field and you have to have more agility.

Still gotta love those tippmanns. It introduced me and I plan to have it when I leave paintball. I might be wrong about what I said above but don't tell me cuz I won't listen.

I don't recall ever expressing any negative comments towards Tippmanns.....certainly not in that paragraph...or flaming a Tippmann user for using one. In the past I have cited its problems as well as its merits when asked, but feel free to dig up ANY old thread of mine in which I flame a Tippmann....

As for the reason most fields shoot Tippmanns instead of Spyders as rentals? You're right, they are more durable. Spyders (or other stacked tube blowbacks) don't take to sand very well and newbies have a tendancy to do things you would never do with ANY gun, but the Tippmann takes it the best. Tippmanns don't have the extra openings for sand to get into, There's only maybe two places for sand to get in the gun, where the cocking rod is and the ball feed, and due to the way the Tippmann is designed, it tends to take sand in either of them fairly well, better than any other gun anyway. The only way you could get sand through a Tippmann is to either lay it on its side in the dirt or pick up dirty balls and put them in your hopper, both of which newbies like to do, but the Tippmann takes it. Also, as you guys like to mention, it's a low maintenence marker. It doesn't need to be oiled as often as a Spyder, so there's less work for the field owner to do on 500 guns or whatever.
Both guns have their ups and downs and possess abilities and problems the others don't....which makes sense because they're TWO different designs! They operate the same way (blowback) so they share basic parts, but they're set up differently.

My first and only pb gun is a 98Custom and its awesome. from day one i upgraded the barrel and got the Response trigger. Now i have a palmer stabilizer on it and a homemeade dropforward. Its durable and reliable. I havent had any chance to prove how durable it is but I have heard stories where a whiny bratty kid was soo upset about being tagged out that he threw his tippy against a tree (prolly a rental)! it performed fine after that.

Though ive never liked spiders because they seem cheaply made like a toy or something flimsy made overseas in a sweatshop somewhere. I have gained great respect for the above Spyder user who pointed out the merits of both guns, and though id never use a stock spyder I might consider getting a tournament quality one someday.

Besides, its not the gun its the player right? As long as its not a cheap rental wizzing balls all over the place (which rental guns tend to do).

Ebonclaw
04-17-2002, 01:10 PM
Mirot...I have a confession.....the Spyders that you see at Wal-Mart ARE cheaply made (remanufactured, just for Wal-Mart to sell). That's why Wal-Mart sells them. Cheap gun=lots of profit. The bolt in the Sport is PLASTIC for crying out loud. Not delrin, just plastic. However, the others that you see are generally pretty high quality guns, with very few having problems out of the box. I made several upgrades and adjustments to my Shutter for many a month before I came across a problem...the bolt wasn't recocking after I put in my new delrin bolt. Turns out it wasn't getting enough airflow, so I drilled the VA and now...it works like any tournament gun, if anything DOES go wrong, I know exactly what it is and I have it fixed in 2 minutes or less, and quite frankly, my nitrogen tank has given me more trouble than the gun. (Burst discs blowing, the first o-ring I had on it was bad...)

Both my valve o-rings are stock ( I liked them so much I even took them off the old valve and put them on the LP one), after a year or more of use, as is the LP chamber ring, as were the bolt o-rings, till I replaced the bolt with my delrin one which needs no o-rings. That's pretty much all the o-rings, unless you count the exp chamber one, which went with the chamber when I sold it and replaced it with a stabilizer (ooooh....shiny chrome...).

You'd be surprised how durable the good Spyders are....too often though you find a newbie who thinks it's a military grade assault rifle and subjects it to abuse only a Tippmann can take. Give it to a person who treats his equipment with respect, and it'll take care of you.
They're a real pleasure to use in speedball, nice and compact, and very lightweight (at least compared to the Tippy, though I understand many people prefer the weight to their gun, as it gives it a more solid feel). They're nice and shiny though for woods play and may not be a good idea for your sniper player. Though I figure if you can see the shiny gun, you're probably either too far away for it to matter or you're close enough that he's already seen you as well. Still, there's the satin black Shutter for those of you who prefer a dark finish.

What I want to see is a camo-shroud built to fit over a Spyder body you can just easily slip on for woods play and remove for speedball.

Oh, and I really like you guy's new A-5.....however, that cyclone feed..did it have to be so damn bulky?

Ok i'll give u that Spyders are good guns when they are takin care of. The reason i dont liek them and not bashing them or nothing they just look so "***ish" all these flashy colors and stuff and ont he box its like Red anodizing! buy me cause i m anodized! who really cares whether ur anodized or spray apinted (in my case i did my paintjob myself) In other words i think the Custom is better its more reliable and it doesnt put all the features ont he front of the box like the spyder. i've seen spyders go to hell plenty of times because people dont take care of them now if u let a tippmann go to hell u can nurse it and get it back to perfect condition... all i'm sayin is that Tippmanns are very very reliable.I love my gun....:D

I just say everyone get what marker you want and let your paintballing do the talking.

one time me and my friends were playing bushball playing brass eagle paint ( you can see where this is going) so we were walking to where we wanted to play so we had to walk on a frozen lake and it cracked so i juped up and i was holding on to the grass that was beside the lake ther was about 3 feet between the grass and the ice. so i make it up and i look in my hopper and i see all my balls are broken!!!
:pissed: i got sooo mad i take my tippy and throw it 20 feet landing on some rocks, with the tank on!! i go pick it up to chek it out and it is fine the tank adaptor thing was a little loose and it was allitle scratched in didnt even take it apart to chek the internals and it works fine.
