I recently found a Tippman 98 and 2 98 customs for sale.

The 98 is $60 and the other 98cs are $50 and $60. Are these worth the price to use as a starting gun for my son and I for speedball and woodsball?

Also what is the difference between the 98 and 98custom?

Thanks

Those are typical used costs for a good working 98 or 98C.

The difference is the 98 is the first version, its upgradable a bit and the 98C is the next version which is even more upgradable.

I personally would go with 2 98C's as the trigger system is a bit better and there are some better upgrades available without having to mod the to accept them.

They are good woodsball guns but for speedball, they are usually looked down upon as they are a bit heavier than "speedball" guns and longer. This does not mean you can not use them for speedball, its the player more than the gun.

I personally have the 98C, I bought mine in 2001 and still use it to this day, still shooting strong, although I have upgraded mine a bit since I bought it.

I recently bought a 98C and installed the response trigger and cyclone hopper. There was a bit of cost to those but now I have a marker that can shoot 15bps without the need for batteries or having to worry about rain. Os Orpackrat said, the 98C has some upgraded internals and is designed to more easily take mods. For example, the place where the response trigger goes through the receiver can be punched out instead of drilled out. Mine is the ACT version which I think helps with not chopping balls if they don't get loaded into the chamber properly.

These are great prices . though I would ask to see the internals first

Even if the internals are gouged, scratched, and coated in a layer of paint goo that strongly resembles dried epoxy, you can still salvage it. Just take it apart, dunk all the pieces into a big bucket of warm water, come back in half an hour, wipe off and reassemble with the lubrication of your choice.
