Hey all. I noticed the price of hands free- voice activated headsets for walk-a-bouts are pretty cheap, and I was wondering if anyone has any paintball experience with them. If it matters, I almost exclusively play casual outlaw ball in the woods. It seems like it has the potential to really be a great addition to the game, although I’m sure the first couple responses to this will deride me for some element that I haven’t thought of yet. Anyhew- what do you think? -ergtide

I think it'd be a lot of fun and a big help in communication. My problem with my recball buds is that none of them take it seriously enough to make a plan of attack, much less use some sort of comm device.

It would help to be able to let the team know you were low or out of paint without yelling it across the field.

Does anyone run this sort of setup? How is it working for you? What sort of radios do you use?

Well we used it in a river game before, but you never could see where the other team started so each team captian used it. we try to use it in a few rec games but it was a bigger pain than doing good. If your whole team had it then it might be better.

I use them in scenario/big games. I don't use vox though, since if you're screaming as your firing etc your buddy doesn't need to hear that. I just use 2 units, one for me and one for someone on my team who is staying close to the general and can give me updates.

our 5 man team uses them mainly for rec ball.. but they arnt vox.. they are just regular versions, but we have the ear peice for under our helmets, so the beeping and talking doesnt give positions away.

They are great when the base is being flanked or something, you can plan a quick reverse and come up behind the attackers when they arnt expecting it..

but what mainly helps is still playing with little communication, but if you and your buddy are spread out and you see someone out of the corner of your eye, you can just confirm your buddy also saw it, and give him a heads up..

thats usualy what we do.. there isnt a lot of talking on the radio, mainly just info, status, and durring a flag cap, then it helps organize the runner, and the fire teams offering the support on the way back

I played using radios with VOX on before (the beeps were turned off too!) and it helped our team alot. I had one radio and my friend had the other, the rest of my team didn't have radios though... but the other team didn't have ANY radios. So my friend went out as a scout and saw the enemy moving in, and we would get ready into position based on that info. We knew what direction they were attacking from. Our team was a bunch of newbies like myself, but it helped us keep organized and ambush the enemy.

Now, we were playing outlaw paintball so I dunno about official games or speedball but it worked fairly well. Just get decent radios where you can turn off the beeping noise, and put in a headset.

Now next game we're going to see if we can get more radios and have our whole team wired up :)

i was thinking about getting some little walkie talkies. you can get them for like 30 bucks around here and that would be a cheap way to stay in communication. we'd just have to strap them to our harnesses or something.
