What exactly does the muzzlebreak do?

On a firearm, a muzzle break allows some of the gas behind the shot to exit the barrel in a way that it helps reduce muzzle lift and recoil. This combination allows you to stay on target better when firing multiple shots.

For example, on my AK, my muzzle break has both small slots perpendicular to the axis of the barrel on the top to allow gas to exit "up" to push the end of the barrel back down and also a group of slots parallel to the barrel axis around the end of the break to allow the expanding gasses to push against the break to try to reduce recoil.

On a paintball gun, the same concept appiles, but just under much less harsh conditions. After shooting a "big" gun, muzzle breaks on a marker seems a little silly :). Not trying to demean anyone who likes their muzzle breaks, just my humble opinion.

Thanks. I was wonderin cause im lookin at the terminator barrel. Does it give u any extra range and is it accurate? What kind of AK do u have? Isnt all called a compensator?

Compensator is another name for muzzle break. A rose by any other name... :) I have a 32* 14" Terminator barrel for my Piranha and as of right now, I think the stock barrel is better than it. I haven't been real satisfied with its performance, but to be fair, I haven't put as much paint through it as the stock barrel. I can't tell any difference with the muzzle break on the Terminator.

I've found that (for me) operating PSI and overall velocity (FPS) is the big thing with the barrel and flying true. With the right combination of PSI and FPS, my stock barrel works well.

I have a Romainian SAR-1 AK-47 with 30 and 40 round clips (shoots the 7.62x39mm round) and Russian PSO-1 scope. Talk about a kick :)

Ok the muzzle break on a paintball gun is not so much to reduce recoil as it is to reduce turbulance behind the ball when it exits the barrell for accuarcy. I personally swear by Lapco SS barrels I have a big shot and a autospirit , the inside of the these opens up at the last inch and works to allow the extra gasses to pass around the ball without creating turbulance. Some other barrels use lots of porting or larger muzzle breaks to allow gasses to escape , but I personaly don't think it is as effective. The stock barrels on phantoms are the same way , this is why they are so accuarate stock. Lapco aluminum barrels are price comarable to terminator's and belive me they are a world better. Just for information sake , on a blow back gun the movement of the hammer and bolt in the gun creates WAY more recoil than the actual firing of it. Thats why agd deesigned there new lighter super bolts for mags out of delrin/nylon , cause it kills some of the recoil. But as far as accuracy is concerned , the quality and the size of paint to barrel match is way way more important than any of the characteristics of your barrel!
