View Full Version : How often do ya think about it

No, not sex ... paintball. I'm short of cash this week so I won't be hitting the field. But I've been thinking about paintball a lot. "Need to get a new barrel ... New Jersey would be nice ... I wonder if a different paintball would work better with my barrel ... If I could get to that bunker, then I could cover ... " and on and on and on.
So, when You can't get to the field, how often do you think about playing. Sure I coulda made this into a poll, but who wants to get flamed? :)

i think about it all the time, "when will my upgrades arrive? when will i go to that new rec place in town? why am i so poor i cant afford any paintballs?"
MuckRaker

That last one especially."Let's see, I've got $50 bucks, I could buy groceries for the family, or I could get a half case of Premiums and play for couple of hours. Decisions, Decisions."

I think about paintball all the time. I think about paintball more than sex (believe it or not).
"I can't wait to play paintball!"
"I wonder what team I will be on for the scenario game?"
"Paintball...paintball...paintball..."
"I can't wait to pick up my new stuff!"
"P-A-I-N-T-B-A-L-L, paintball!" followed by "Jeremy, stop yelling out in class!"

it really depends...There are times (a month or more) that I don't want anything to do with paintball. On the other hand, I hit points (like now) where I can't get enough of it...

MuckRaker
01-12-2001, 05:02 AM
The car and wedding don't worry me too much, It's college that scares the hell out of me.
"Dad, I need $30,000 a year, plus expenses for food, lodging, travel, beer, beer, beer, illicit drugs, beer, beer, several hundred parties and oh, i almost forgot, beer. Yes, that will be for the next four years, unless I find a way to stretch my academic career out for an entire decade. Yes, you are responsible for the financial upkeep of this great adventure, but don't worry, I'll get a job as a clerk at the 7-11 so I can help pay for some of that beer." Times four.
elTwitcho
01-12-2001, 06:35 AM
Ahhh college :)
As for thinking about paintball, if I'm not actively involved in doing something else, there's a 90 percent chance I'm thinking about paintball. It's not healthy to be this way...

So I originally posted this thread cause I didn't think I'd have the money to play this weekend ... then, after checking things out, I realize I do have the money. But the weathe sucks, and I'd have to play a night game, which I don't like to do, plus the weather ain't too great right now, cold and overcase with a good chance of rain ... so I sez to myself, "Let's see about $65 to hit the field (case of paint, fill up the tank, field fees) and then another $40 or $50 for a babysitter ... Hmmm ... that new Raven Nuvis mask is only $75 at BBT ... hmmm ... I could tell the wife I actually saved money on Paintball, like when she buys $100 worth of clothes and sez she saved us some money cause they were regularly $35 but were on sell for $25."
So anyway, the mask will be in next week. It was a quick fix, and I'm not thinking about paintball quite as much as I was earlier today.

I just made this little poster with a picture of my new mask, under the mask it reads, "I can't wait till next week, I can't wait till next week ... Cause I'm gonna scare some Newbies!!"

No offense but the Raven nuvis mask is way over prised and is as ugly as sin. If your going to buy a mask for that much you really should have gone for a JT IZE or flex 7. But that is just my opinion.
MuckRaker
01-13-2001, 03:07 PM
Counter, I think the Nuvis is one of the best looking masks made ... I some people are gonna be turned off because it doesn't look like what we think a mask should look like. but that's my opinion.

As the manager of Team Wiseguys and working at a paintball store, I pretty much think about paintball on a daily basis. I also write for Paintball News and do a lot on the internet. I just came back from a week's vacation in Vail and I handed out over 50 team cards to people that asked about the paintball shirts I had on. The cards have the team website address on them. Pretty interesting how many people actually play!

yeah, this has got to be one of the "best kept secrets." As popular as this sport is and you never really hear about it on TV, in the newspaper, on the radio ... Think about it, it's got to this point mainly through word-of-mouth, Internet forums like this and a handful of trade publications.

Bad thing about it is that when you do read or hear about it in the press it's usually because some idiot did something. There was a big brooha awhile back about some kid that "...froze some paintballs and then shot them into a crowd at a party...". Some girl either lost an eye or was seriously harmed. Either way it was nothing but bad press. I'm working on a tournament for this fall/winter that will be indoors and will benefit Toys For Tots. I want to get the Marines to underwrite and sanction it to make it as big as possible. We're looking at the State Fairgrounds Coliseum. Hopefully that will gie some positive press!!

I'm kinda torn on this whole thing about getting paintball on TV ... I may have posted differently in the past, but i think it has the potential to do more harm to the sport than good (mind you I'm thinking national coverage not local coverage, and even then ...)
Cause once it goes on, say, ESPN or ESPN2, and people become more accustomed to the sport, that's when the "investigative" reporters start popping up at fields trying to prove that the sport is not safe and is a menace to society.
I think the best way to approach is with local media, small local papers, TV stations and such ... and broach it as ActionJunkie is ... A charity event, hopefully linked to a large agency (like the Marines Toys for Tots program). It's hard for even large, aggressive news agencies to bash a charity event, especially during November and December.
Even Rec gamers should try to encourage reporters and photographers to come to a field ... but not just to write about paintball ... you need a hook. Maybe try to sell them on a Scenario game or Big game ... or that there's a group of local boys who've worked odd jobs so they can attend the Scenario game, or that have worked hard on the tourney circuit and now they're headed to the World Cup ... It's easier to sell it to a reporter if he/she doesn't have to do all the leg work.
If you get the local media interested, it's not as likely they'll portray it in a bad light. Most local media are looking for light, featury type stuff ... an easy story to fill a couple of minutes of air time or 15 or 20 inches of space in the paper ... If they think they can get in and out easy, without a lot of time invested, they're more likely to do the story.
My worst nightmare is to turn on the Evening News and see Tom Brokaw on a paintball field "An innocent game or the proving grounds for future psychotic gunmen ... "
anyway, that's my penny's worth.

Yeha, they allready air stories like that now. I think with national coverage of what paintball truely is would cure the ignorance that so many people have.

01-16-2001, 04:49 PM
I think the only national coverage of paintball I've seen was following the Columbine Massacre, supposedly those two "kids" were into paintball ... and I remember something about that Frozen Paintball thing that was posted earlier ... very isolated incidents ... but the more mainstream something becomes, the more glaring the coverage becomes ...

the way that the media puts it..it sounds like all of us who play painbtall today are gonna go out tomorrow and blow up the World Trade Center or something...i just play paintball cuz it's fun and not because i want to become one of Osama bin Laden's followers....we need to get the media involved in the good side of paintball..not hte idiots out there that are shooting grandmas and doing drivebys on neighbor's cars...

TLplus84
01-16-2001, 06:27 PM
true....but the thing is that paintball has such a bad rep taht a little publicity couldn't hurt it. I mean..all the publicity the sport gets is "three teenagers caused a major pileup after shooting a paintballgun out of one of the kid's cars and causing an accident". Maybe if there was a little publicity on how the sport is REALLY played, then people wont' think so lowly of paintball.
On a lighter note, everybody is talking about drive-by's targeted at grandmas. Well, my friend and this other guy were out in the guy's front yard playing football (they're 14) All the sudden this really old guy that they never met before drove by in a pickup and shot at them with a paintball gun ! They just screamed and hit the dirt. This wasn't some guy whose mailbox they bashed or something, thay'd never seen him before. True story. Weird, but true :D

heh heh heh ... I remember Southern Ohio well ... wait, scratch that ... you didn't hear that ...
 is colon eek colon : eek : no spaces though.
You wanna do something that will put paintball in a positive light ... talk to the owner of the field where you play and ask him to let you help organize a charity tournament, maybe to help the victims of the earthquake in Salvador, or to help United Way, or some other charity ... if you can get that going, then go to the local media and let them in on it.
I'm not sure if just generic coverage of real tournaments would influence the public one way or the other ... but it'd still be fun to watch.
