Well..is it? Me, well, as long as I've been playing, and as much as I love it, I feel the majority of paintball (recball) is NOT a sport.

Recball=hobby

Tourney=sport, more or less

Some people might not agree. That's fine. But, I urge you (urgggeee? ) not to simply reply because you want to make sure everyone knows you LOVE paintball. I searched for a thread similar to this, and couldn't find one, which I'm surprised about. I feel it's time this is asked. What does everyone think?

Yes paintball is a sport because you are excersising. Bowling is not a sport (well it is but it shouldn't be considered one)

Here's my take on it: I think paintball is a sport in all forms, except scenario, which is much less of a sport most of the time than a war game.

Heck yeah it's a sport. If curling or sychronized swimming are sports, why isn't paintball one?

How is bowling not a sport? Anything that consists of competition between 2 (or more) people is considered a sport. One person is trying to top the other person.

Tourny ball and rec ball are both competitions in their own ways, so ya they're both sports.

yes, i think it is. but its also a game. the way i see it, all sports are either game-based or competition-based. game-based sports have an objective that can be accomplished in any fashion one desires as long as its within the rules, example, there is no one way to play basketball in order to win. competition-based sports are more ways of finding out who is best at one particular thing, like running, running is involved in most sports (or some variant of it, you know what i mean), but in most, if you arent the fastest guy on the field, you haven't automatically lost, try bringing that mentality to a 100 meter dash and see how well you do.

the general rule of thumb in dividing "games" from "sports" is that of physical exertion, not participants; checkers is a head-to-head competetion, but it is a game, and not a sport, as there is no "physical" portion of the game.

Paintball, regardless of where it is played, is a sport, just as baseball is a sport whether it is played in Yankee Stadium or a vacant lot.

Oh... and do you know who badmouths bowling? People who can't bowl...

I suppose Dr. Isotope has a point. However, I still stand strong that UNLESS there are seperate teams competing for a common goal, it's not a sport. Even if recball is two teams trying to win, it's not like tourney ball, where you are competing for ranking.

P.S., this has the makings of a sticky, I think :)

i think anything that you compete in physically is a sport. and paintball is definitely physically competitive . . . a sport with out a doubt.

just watch PTI on ESPN

if something relies on music being played in the background it is not a sport. so dancing, ice skating, cheerleading are not sports, but they do have athletes. Bowling is a sport because it uses a consistant point system and it different every time and requires different skill and fitness levels to paly.
anyway...
Of course paintball is a sport! what kind of dumbfu** wouldn't think so?

Yes, paintball is a sport in all shapes, ways, and forms.

I think paintball should be deemed as a spectator sport as well. :)

Disclaimer: I am not insulting anyone's choice of activity, be it a game or sport. :D

Some things are obviously games: Monopoly, checkers, chess, cards, etc

My friend's definition of a sport is:
Any activity in which there is not a 100% safe time to have a drink. So running, swimming, soccer, baseball, etc, are sports, but golf and bowling are not. By that definition Paintball is also a sport (especially speedball).

My personal definition of a sport is:
Any PHYSICAL activity in which the participants take simultaneous action and do NOT TAKE TURNS.
Almost all board games are set up so that the players take turns and are thus called board GAMES.
Things such as table hockey and computer games are games simply because they do not involve physical activity.
This definition would also make pool, darts, golf, and bowling into games since the players take turns (or do not have to play simultaneously). Races (running, swimming, downhill skiing) would also be considered GAMES as would evaluations of technique (figure skating, skate boarding, etc). This is not to say these are not athletic competitions, but that they are just games. Why else call it the Olympic GAMES?

Not to leave out the Canadians - curling would end up being a cross between a game and a sport. The teams take turns (game), but the activity requires the cooperation of teammates (sport).

This definition leaves examples of definite sports to be baseball, football, soccer, basketball, and, oh ya, paintball. ;)

Both speedball and rec ball would be considered sports since BOTH involve physical activity and no one is taking turns. :)

I don't care what you or your friends definition of "sport" means but the dictionary cleary states:

Sport, noun

1 - An athletic activity requiring skill or physical prowess and often of competitive nature.

17. To engage in athletic activity.

So that means paintball, pool, golf, bowling, running, swimming, downhill skiing, figure skating, skate boarding are all classed as sports.

But the definition of "game" is:

Game. noun, adjective

1 - An amusement or pastime: children's games, such as hopscotch and marbles; a card game.

3 - A competitive activity involving skill, chance, or endurance and played according to a set of rules for the amusement of the players or spectators.

8 - Something requiring skill, endurance, or adherence to rules.

So by that definition paintball, pool, golf, bowling, running, swimming, downhill skiing, figure skating, skate boarding are all classed as games as well...

Oh well the world may never know...

Sports have 1 set of organized rules with non biased refs, with super organization,we in PB do not.Look at the rules,we have at least 4 differen't sets of rules.
