View Full Version : Camo vs. Jersey in THE WOODS

Ok

I hope Crime Dog and Eltwitcho won't mind, but here is a Jersey compared to a Ghillie suit in the woods

As you can see Crime Dog is hidden and El Twitcho sticks out

Camo = good for woods

Jersey = good for everything else

wow i can hardly see the guy in camo... my guess is that its the lighter patch of grass on the right hand side of the pic...

hahaha You make a very good point Blazestorm. But on that same note, why do most newbies come to speedball fields with all the military surplus gear they can find? Maybe they were planning on blending in with the dirt?:D

Blazestorm
05-03-2002, 12:33 AM
Cause newbies think camo is what all paintball players wear... they want to fit in =)

/me sorta made eltwitcho look like an idiot :goody:

Well it depends on the way you play woodsball.

If you are running around shooting and crap what good is camo gonna do???

If you stake out a position and only move a little bit at a time camo will help ALOT.

Sooooooo i'm guessing Eltwitcho likes to move alot (as in moving up to the forward bunkers and getting people out while Crime dog likes to stay back and pick anyone off that gets through the front line right???? Don't get mad at me mods i'm just making an educated guess.

Frankly, I don't think el Twitcho cares whether he sticks out or not because he's gonna take anyone out who sees him anyways. Plus, jersey=intmidation. Especially to new players.

Thor makes a really nice motocross jersey in hunter green. I forget the model but I think it's the AirFlo. It's not really camo, but it's got a little black and grey in it. That's my pref for play. Light, easy to move in, has elbow pads, offers some blending for woods ball, and you don't look like GI Joe during speedball games:P

Camo in speed ball makes no sense, unless you can blend in with the bunker your behind.
Where is the camo dude?

is it only me who thinks that picture looks really fake?

Crime Dog
05-03-2002, 10:32 AM
It IS fake...I've never played paintball with Twitcho before. But the pic DOES have a point...(and made me laugh too! Heh!)

PGA makes a very good point. If you're an active player that moves a lot in the woods, camo really doesn't help much. I'll agree with that. The human eye looks for motion, and looks for familiar shapes (the human form). If something moves, I'm going to see it, regardless of what they're wearing.

However, if something is sitting still or moving very slowly, with a ghillie suit on (which breaks up the human form, AND blends in with it's surroundings), you're going to have one heck of a time trying to find the ghillie/camo wearer.

PGA, you're also partially right in my style of play. For myself...I like to make my shots count, and I like to crawl and sneak quite a bit. Most of the time (not all of the time mind you), I like to sneak up the flanks, or through the brush, and come in behind people. Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't. I'm still practicing, and still working on "perfecting" my ghillie suit. (Which I"ll never truly perfect it, but hey, it's fun to tinker with it.) I'm a slow shooter as well. I don't have a response trigger on my Tippy (yes...a Mod that uses a Tippmann!), I don't have the e-bolt kit, I don't even own a Revvy. If I get in a sticky situation, my regular ol' semi-auto is enough (for me) to get myself out. And if I get tagged...hey, I get tagged! The point is, I'm having fun with the game!

And I just happen to enjoy sneaking around (I can't stand camping), and seeing how well I can blend in with my surroundings. So far, no "really cool" ghillie stories to share (as I've played with my friends too much with the ghillie to be really effective. They know what to look for.)

Here's a closeup shot of my ghillie, with me in some high grass (before I shredded most of the burlap on my suit. Still doesn't blend as well as I want it to.)

I wear a camo suit, tiger stripe and that's about it. Ghillie suits aren't allowed at our field because there is too much of a problem with bals not breaking.

Anyhow, the best thing I have ever found is waiting in the shadows near a well lit area. Don't move or they will see you. When the enemy is in the light, open fire! They are in the light and very easy to see, while they can hardly see you at all.

It's all about motion, if you aren't moving, they have a harder time seeing you.

completely out of topic (well sorta), a coworker of mine here at the Dept. of Justice is getting his Master's degree in Military studies and anti-terrorism. He has been taking a ghillie suit class, yes a 4 month class, in techniques on how to make ghillie suits to fit various conditions in nature. His final grade is his "portfolio" of suits. That's one class I'd like to take!!! Hopefully when I take him paintballing for his first time I'll get a few pics and post them..

i wear army camo because 1) i spend my money on video games and 2) they are incredibly rugged. however i really really really wanna get some SporTiger camo, i saw that stuff in APG and the guy just disappeared.

Crash Danger

CrimeDog: use some light green and even a little yellow paint on your ghille suit to make it match in with the foliage more

And the camo that most people buy is the stuff developed for dark rainforests and dense jungles. That's why it doesn't work as well.

But the thing is, even though your eye senses movement, it will still be harder to aim your shots up on a person wearing camo as opposed to a person wearing bright colors. Especially when you're in a fast firefight when you don't have time to think so your eyes catch the brightest target.

i just wear clothes that are really comfortable, i will wear a forest green long sleeve shirt, so i dont stand out too much. usually what i notice is peoples gun or hoppers or shapes of people (like crime said) and bright jerseys dont help . . . though if you play right (also depending circumstances [field]) it wont be too bad . . . but it may be a slight disadvantage.

Blazestorm
05-03-2002, 02:30 PM
Yes but I'm saying I hate it when people are like "CAEMO IS DUM AN FO NEWBSIES"

(Yes I misspelled on purpose.)

Jerseys are a way to express how you feel, if you want a simple jersey, you might buy a Smart Parts, if you want to show how um, evil you are :badboy: you could get a nice Animal Paintball jersey

Jerseys are for expressing yourselves

Camo clothing is a way to help give an edge in woods, if your standin still in the woods with camo, you'll most like be noticed by your mask or gun, but if your arm or leg is sticking out (and you don't know) you probably will not get shot. Now if that arm or leg is bright purple... sorta tells you to shoot it now doesn't it

I own camo right now and am in the process of buying a jersey.

I just wanted to make a point, the picture was made from a random pic from someone's website, eltwitcho standing in Area51 field and Crime dog in his backyard =)

btw VeNoM also has a very good point, where what you want to, not what people tell you you should wear

Since I play regularly on both speedball and wood fields. I picked the Raven green Lair jersey('99 style) It is good and the woods and "cool" enough for sppedball.

05-03-2002, 05:12 PM
I wear bright blue for woodsball. Not the smartest thing, but its comfortable. My style of play hasnt changed much since Ive switched from camo to a jersey, except I ve gotten more agrresive. mainly because Id rather go to the person than have them come to me, and also because of my lack of fire power.... But it all boils down to preference. Wear what you want.

Crash Danger
05-03-2002, 05:30 PM
but conversely, what's so wrong about people wearing camo for speedball? Wearing jerseys for woodsball is the same thing as camo for speedball.

The only reason you can't see him is cuz u put a fade on the both of them. And his colors are closer so those show through better. and how the hell am i the only one that noticed this?!!?

The gille suit just makes his outline blend in (in real life) as you can see in his pics. It makes it so you don't know where he starts or ends. Thats all it does, sometimes if you are not carefull you could miss him sneaking up on ya.

05-03-2002, 06:08 PM
i wear me camo to speedball. i need the ruggedness, i often slide right into the bunkers, and that aint fun when u slide on gravel. no paintball pants can give me the ruggedness and sheer not-giving-a-crap-whether-or-not-i-destroy-itness and jerseys just seem to fall apart.

Blazestorm
05-03-2002, 06:19 PM
I put a fade in because that is what it SHOULD look like cept eltwicho shouldn't be faded.

Anyway

Camo = Woodsball

Jersey = Speedball/Airball/Hyperball/Skyball/etc.

They don't mix. Don't mix them

THIS THREAD HAS ERECTILE DYSFUNCTION

what if I had a camo shirt and called it a jersey?

Blazestorm

Then you'd be the only person calling it a jersey because everyone else would be calling it camo

Butter Knife

it seems that many people are misled about the purpose of camo, so im gonna set some things straight. camo will not hide you, ever, not in a million years, if you are wearing a perfectly toned ghillie and not moving a muscle, but STANDING UP IN THE MIDDLE OF A SMALL CLEARING you are dead, there is no way around it. the point of camo is that it won't give you away if you do a decent job of hiding and moving quietly for yourself, unlike anything with as artificial a color as blue jeans (these are a bad idea in the woods, trust me). "but" you might say "if i just run forward it doesnt matter, right?" no, camo will still help you even if your attempts at stealthiness are pathetic at best, non existent in the eyes of a sane human being. i have seen people sprinting in camo from only 20-30 feet, i could tell where the people were, but im not sure i could have shot them (even if i hadnt been watching from the DP). ive also seen my friend walking slowly through the woods from a quarter mile away. and these woods are pretty dense, remember what i said about blue jeans? this is what im talking about.

personnally, id say that if you plan on playing in the woods a lot, invest in some stinking camo, its cheaper than a jersey anyway (i got my shirt for $5, i dont think ive ever seen a jersey for under $20, you do the math) and if you dont plan on playing much speedball, then who cares if you wear camo on the field, its no easier to see than most jerseys anyway, and if everyone is concentrating on calling you a newbie cuz you dont want to blow your wad on some spandex (or whatever it is that jerseys are made of) it just makes them that much easier to shoot, repeatedly.

Ding Ding DIng the answer is if you play woods and speedball you buy camo gear that way it is usefull all the time instead of having a jersey you payed $50 for you can have 2 extra sets of camies for the same $50 and use it when you play in the woods too.

when i play the only time i cant see guys in camo are when they are a million miles away, but they cant shoot that far. so i agree with venom, its not a big difference what the colors are, its mainly other characteristics like shapes, and shot sounds

1. Eltwitcho does not play woods. We have played woods one time and that was in a tournament so it didn't matter

2. Even if we did play woods we wouldn't just sit around doing nothing waiting for someone, we would be moving.

/me slaps forehead

This entire thread was not about eltwitcho and crimedog

I was showing that jerseys are nice for tourneys but pointless in woods.

I took eltwitchos picture because it was the first one in that post your pics wear you are in your gear.

And I took crimedogs picture because he was full camo.

This is not about eltwitcho playing in the woods!!!

I hate camo...I wear a jersey no matter what (I dont play much Woods but...)

If the field is set up correctly....it really shouldnt matter if you wear camo or jersey....youll be shooting at each other...then does it matter?

lol u can tell thats photoshopped in man! El Twitcho's legs are transparent for gods sake! And crime dog isnt wearing camo, he's just a ghost  !

But in last months issue of a paintball mag my friend had they had an article about different camos. It basically covered the woodland style, that works really well. Alot better then BDU's

Blazestorm
05-06-2002, 02:28 PM
Eltwitcho didn't show his legs in the picture

If you would have read all the posts, I said I DID Photoshop it together to prove that camo is more useful for people in the woods.

Hey anonymous...you'll figure out I'm no ghost when my paintball hits you square in the back of the head. :badboy: *chuckles*

And Crash..._I'M_ a mod, and I don't think this is a pointless thread. I'm actually quite enjoying (most of) it. In fact, I'll be posting some pics I took of my ghillie just last night. I hung it up in the pine trees behind my house. While you'll be able to pick out, you'll have to admit that someone that is not expecting a ghillie, or scanning the area very quickly will pass right over the ghillie. And my ghillie wasn't even built for a pine environment. I'm getting more happy with it. (I shredded more of my burlap and did some recoloring last night as well.) I forgot to bring the pics to work this morning however, so you'll just have to wait to see the pics...
