which is the best co2 regulator? am i under the correct impression that all that is required to install a regulator is screwing the reg in and attaching the hoses (and using some teflon tape to stop leakage)?

Yea, the regulator installation is pretty straight forward. There are a lot of nice regulators out there, are you running CO2 or HPA. Personally I'm a big fan of the Max-Flow regulators. For CO2 use the Palmer Stabilizer is a pretty nice regulator. Do some research and find out what regulator will suit your application the best.

i use co2, and i've heard good things about the palmer stabelize. however, there are both male and female versions. if i get the male, i think it replaces the x-chamber or something, and if i get the female, it goes into the bottomline adapter. anyone have any info on how this works?

Well get the male chuck the X-chamber cause you wont need it any more. What you set your marker too 300 fps. before you in stall the male stabilizer. Then use a chrono to reset the marker too 300 fps or close too it. then you can used the velocity adjuster too fine tune it after that.
Once you set the stablizer you pretty much don't have too mess with it.The female one I wouldn't mess with but its about the same set up as the male you set it the same way
