i thought that too..but just remember this phrase:
You get what you pay for

Its not exactly the original price of something, its also how many times you have to keep buying it, like paint. Thats why this sport/recreation is so expensive. I dont believe the guns or masks are that bad, but co2 or any gas and paint can get really expensive at 39 cents an ounce or to continuously have to buy paint.

the problem is supply and demand the more people that play the more they will make the more they make the lower the prices go until I'l still be the same broke @$$ spending my entire pay check on some paintball gear I can't afford and digging in my pockets on game day slapping 4 bucks in change on the counter just to bust me to get my nitro fill!!!! :)

Sounds like you Boys need to go out and get a job ... LOL  ... but even for us OLD FARTS who have jobs, it's expensive ... and I know what ya mean about having to constantly buy paint. I buy a case at a time, usually split it with a friend, and I try to shoot conservatively ... don't waste your paint.

Yeah, im one of those morons who likes to shoot at trees 8 trillion times to see how accurate my gun is. Sometimes ill shoot straight in the air a couple rounds and hope it will come down on someones head. By the time the game or round actually starts, im bumming paint from someone else. Not a bad way to save money if u come with little paint and are able to get a friendly discount by buying bulk from a pal. :)

Everything in paintball is very reasonible in prices. Except for the paintballs themselves.

Counterfeight has a good point. If you think about how much R&d(research and develpment) has gone into the paintball guns like the Angel and Shocker, then teh price is pretty reasonable..paintballs is what kills my wallet....

actually...guns are pretty expensive. so are the barrels. i mean....im obsessed with paintball...but its so hard for me to find enough money at age 13. paint is VERY expensive. i use a case a day...dats 50$ a day, plus 10$ admission, plus my co2 fills.

TLplus84
01-16-2001, 06:43 PM
hell man....50 dollars a case i cheap...my field charges 80.....

MuckRaker
01-16-2001, 07:21 PM
same here TL, $69.95 for a case of PMI premium purple/yellow, which is a sucky color ... I like mine a little more vivid ... I think if you're gonna order paint online, try to find a store in your state so you can avoid excessive shipping charges, you'll have to pay sales tax, but it's not that bad.

We just ordered from 800Paintball in south Florida ... two day shipping (regular ground, not expressive) was $7 plus $4 or $5 in tax. just slightly under what we'll pay at the field, even when adding in the $10 charge for not using their paint.

well...only Anne Arundel allows BYOP...all the other places are field paint only..they're Marbs..but still..mad expensive..

i totally agree. paintballing is really pricey, but it is worth it.

i think the guns are pretty decept, but paint is aweful, and barrels are just outrageous! i mean a boom stick will cost more than say the spyder compact you are putting it on!

get this, a friend of mine did a college paper on the process of making paintballs. the thing is that a case of 2000 balls only costs a paintball manufacturer around $12-15 to make. they then mark up the price for us poor folks that live on a fixed income and expect us to pay $60-80 for a case of friggin paint. its not supply and demand, we just get the shaft in the deal.

Hmmmm... In my opinion it is much cheaper than it used to be. When I first started playing paint was 30 cents a ball. You also had to leave a dollar deposit for the tube. The paint wasn't always "round". You had a ball sizer that you used to form the paint into spheres. The 12 gram cartridges were from $1.00 to $1.50 each depending on how many you bought. The guns themselves were either pieces of crap for $300-$400 or better crap for $600-$1,000. Everything was CO2, there were no chronographs, face protection was simple shop goggles, the paint was laquer bassed and you had to use turpentine to clean it off you and your gear.

BUT!!! We had a blast. Games lasted all day. There generally wasn't a field fee since you played in a woods usually owned by one of the players. There were generally 30-50 people on a team/army. We started at about 8 am played until noon, ate lunch (drank a few beers...) then played from about 2 until 8 pm. If you went through 100 balls a day you were a heavy shooter!! There was no such thing as spray and pray. Your shots had to be quick and accurate. Lots and lots of tactics that really don't come into play these days.

Sorry for the ramblings, it's time for my medicine now.....

You can complain about the mark up of paintballs, but have you considered the mark up on other products such as McDonald's hamburgers or french fries. It's how people make money ;) As long as people are willing to spend the cash and the demand is high and manufaturers are few then the price will stay high. Fortunately for us, as paintball becomes bigger and more companies produce the stuff we want the cheaper things will get. I too remember when paintballs were .30 each, but back then 100 balls lasted you all day and the demand for large quantities of paint were low. It's all about supply and demand ;)

still...if it really costs maybe 20 bucks to make a case of paint..then sell it for like 60..then i think thats highway robbery..

That's just the way the economy works...You think it costs $20 to make but you have to consider the price of operating the business, shipping and stuff like that. Also distributers (aka the middleman) like NPS raise the proce a bit so they make a penny or two, then the dealer gets it and they have to support themselves as well as the business they run (including rent, utilities, shipping, losses)... in the end the profit isn't as big as one would think. Like I said earlier, the price mark up of other products is a lot worse than paintball. Think about how much it costs intel to make a computer chip and then how much you end up paying for it...

oh yaeh...i forgot that we don't buy paint directly from the factory...which now..if you think aboutit..wouldn't it be alot cheaper if you bought paint at hte factory?

The paint is too expensive. I pay $200 (canadian) a case at the indoor fields we play at this time a year!!
Some fields only sell it at $15/100. THATS $300 a case now how can they expect the sport to grow with prices like that?

I can't wait for the summer so we can play in the woods again.

Diablo factory is in Montreal and we tried to buy it factory direct. No luck.

My brother worked there for 3 weeks (before I was into the sport.SOB. He quit because of the powder they use affecting his breathing)Anyways he said that all the balls were the same and differnt boxes would come down the line and be filled by the same supply??? Are premium balls worth more??

I'm suprised it costs that much ... RPS (we all know who they are) is actually a Pharmaceutical company, it's based in Clearwater, Fla. The same Gelatin they produce for Tylenol Gel Caps is used to make the paintball shell ... the fill in PMI and RPS paintballs is Sorbitol, a natually occurring dietary sweetner and food color, like you'd find in the grocery store. Some manufacturers may also add wax to the mix to thicken the fill. And some companies that make "tournament" grade paintballs add iodine so that the the paint leaves a temporary stain where it hit.

Sorbitol?? Muck

We use that at work (hospital) for constipation!!! I could bring some paintballs to work to have patiant chew on if there all backed up!! I know they say it is awfully sweet!!

yeah, I know how that goes, I live about 45 minutes from Clearwater where RPS is located. They're number is not listed in the phone book, they aren't in any 411 listing ... makes me wonder if they're paintball operation is run out of an abandoned warehouse.

You know, paintballs don't really taste any worse then, say, tofu ... If you ever got lost during a scenario game, you could probably survive on the paintballs your hauling!!

I lifted this from MilleniumPaintball ...
"The "Fill" of most modern paintballs is a mixture of Sorbitol, color dye, and occasionally a little wax. Sorbitol is a food sweetener used in candy and gun. It is non toxic, water soluble and breaks down very quickly. As a comical side effect the nutritional information notes "excess consumption can have a laxative effect."

But back to the regularly scheduled topic ... I hate living so close to where they make Marbs and not being able to call them to try to cajole them into selling me a couple of cases at "cost" ... especially when I'm paying $80 for them at the field.
