View Full Version : Problems with Cricket Board

Members of the local reigning Amateur team, Farside (an official Smar Parts Team) is complaining about inneffectiveness of the new ball sensor attached to the cricket boards. From what I understand when talking to members of the team, all of them wish to switch back to the original V1 boards.
The way I understand it, is that the new board senses the ball by seeing if anything has "passed" the eye. The problem occurs during rapid fire when the balls freefall down the feedneck and bounce after passing the eye.

hmmm....
I did get a couple chops on Sunday with vision on... kinda freaked me out.
However, it could have been due to the fact that there was a busted ball SOMEWHERE in my bag of paint (there was paint on the inside of the bag) and I never found it- anything would have chopped that ball.
I've played four full days with the cricket vision.. I only had a chop with that bad bag of paint. Two of those days I was consistently outshooting the hopper, and holding the gun at an angle even.
But regardless, I hope someone can do a full test to prove/disprove this claim by farside.

It makes me wonder if they are going to do an "eye-swap" if the problem does prove to be chronic.

yeah, I'm gonna play around with mine for a while to see if I can get it to chop again... I'll let you know what happens.
Tempest261
06-18-2002, 03:53 PM
wow... I just ripped a fast string outside and I actually heard THREE dry-fires. No chops, but the dry-fires should have never occured. This could explain my handfull of chops on Sunday.
Keep in mind that I just cleaned my eye... so that's not the problem
THIS IS BAD
FOM, can you comment on this?
Is it just me or do I smell a revision/recall potentially on the horizon.
DasBaldDog
06-18-2002, 03:57 PM
Well depending if you're running the LRR mod, that could explain dry-fires instead of chops.
Tempest261
06-18-2002, 04:01 PM
yeah... maybe so (since I am). The paint I used on sunday was super-brittle Steel, so that would explain the chops when the vision malfunctioned.
damnit.. I'm really bummed now. These new boards need to be revised.

Awww..... usually you defend the honor of your gun with such fierceness........
Yeah, I hope they do an upgrade, cause I'd REALLY like to get the digital board.

06-18-2002, 04:09 PM
well yeah I do, but only if what I'm saying is true . I don't lie about stuff to make me feel better about owning them like 90% of the paintball community does. If it sucks, I'm going to tell you it sucks.
and this cricket vision board SUCKS.
DasBaldDog
06-18-2002, 04:11 PM
Hmmm.... still though. I'm not used to seeing such a turn in opinion in ANYONE on these forums, much less you.
Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you say that your Cricket Board was doing fine a week or so ago.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but didn't you say that your Cricket Board was doing fine a week or so ago.
yeah. That's why i'm stupified a little... it worked great earlier.. why is it all of a sudden giving me **** now. I never have actively TRIED to cause it to chop...
Also, I switched over to my ricochet... perhaps if I go back to the Revvy I'll see the problem go away again. Regardless of what hopper I use -hell if I hand feed them even- it should NOT FIRE when there isn't a ball in the chamber. And as we all know, it does.

take off your eye, and run your hand over it, and the, less than asecond after your hand is off the eye, try and fire your gun. If it works, then you are prolly right, it just sees if something passesit. If not, try it again. If still not, then...
DasBaldDog
06-18-2002, 04:48 PM
Well,
By what I understand, that's the way the new Cricket board works, by sensing movement passed it.
The Legend

I've always said those boards sucked, from the day I first saw one.
I kept my mouth shut as to why I didn't like them, now its public knowledge.
Once the eye reads the ball it puts it into fire mode. If the ball is moved from the chamber the gun will still fire. So if you tip your gun or the ball stack bounces up the gun will still fire, even if there isnt a ball there. Once a ball drops the eye turns off and the gun fires, after that shot it waits to see another one, and does the same.
Temp- Drop a ball in your gun, remove the ball. Pull the trigger. You'll get what I'm saying.

yep. I knew that was how it worked as soon as I got my hands on it, but I didn't consider the balls BOUNCING- much the same as I'm sure SP didn't consider them bouncing either.
On a side note: I wish the Japanese mass-produced paintball guns. Like in cars, they make sure to avoid little fu** ups like this (and don't tell me go British with IR3+cops.. that has its own host of issues).
This is what SP SHOULD have done to the Vision board's algorithm:
Detect movement across eye
IF movement is detected across eye before gun is fired - not ready to fire
ELSE - ready to fire
In other words, they should have set it up so that the gun doesn't fire if it sees the paint bobble back up into the feed tube. This wouldn't be hard to program.
Seems simple to me..

Or they could have just kept it the same as the v1 boards. If paint is read when trigger is pulled, it shoots.
Another thing with the cricket, if you play anything like I do the balls will be moved around in your hopper a lot. Say I make a move up the field, I most likely dove in, and paint rolled out of the feed neck. If I pop right up ready to fire the gun still senses the ball that was there before I even moved. If I shoot when its falling...chop chop chop.
Thats rare, yes. But its still possible. With the v1 board I didnt have this problem...

maybe someone should make a gated feed port like the one the ir3 uses

Is the reason for the change of styles between the boards due to the fact that the Cricket is self adjusting? I think SP did this for marketing purposes and it is coming back to bite them in the ***.

all the new imps come with this cricket board? that's the vision cricket board right?
DasBaldDog
06-18-2002, 07:56 PM
Even the non-visions have that board but they only chirp when you turn the gun on, from what I heard.

Or SP could be smart and just keep the v1 board, since it worked just fine.
Who needs self adjusting dwell? I havent touched my dwell since the day I first used my imp...
The self adjustint paint thing is kinda cool, but yet again, I rarely ever adjusted my vision either.
Its a gimmick, and a crappy one at that.

Well, I did like the push button on/off and the digital settings instead of the v1's style but that doesn't mean they're inferior.
The new vision Impulse I've ordered, I specificly asked for the V1 board.

Good boy.
And yes, the switch on the side is a pain, I'd always turn my gun off. But I learned to play around it.

Use a low rise feed tube, if u use a high rise when u get gaps in your feed stack the ball bounces out of the breech and is pinched by the bolt
sp tech told me this at the DMA last month
my team is a sp europe factory team and we have the cricket boards in our guns with low rise feeds they are awesome no dry fire or chops

Wow, are all sp techs stupid these days?
With a highrise you are less likely to get skips in the ball stack, thats the whole point of a highrise.
DasBaldDog
06-19-2002, 07:08 AM
The Farside boys have been trying everything and I do believe they've tried switching feednecks. Most of them STARTED with lowrises to begin with.

Actually, think about it. It might work. They have less of a drop. Of course, if you shake the gun a lot, then yeah, you still have the issue. But in steady fire it will less likely occur.
StealthElephant

i thought the highrise was to help when you tilt your gun and shoot, you have a stack of 7 in case your rev has trouble feeding...i would believe that the high rise might cause a "bounce"...
Tempest261

Just talked to a tech...
he told me that I should try to unscrew my high-rise a little. That might fix it... yeah right. I explained to him that it happens mainly when I fire insanely fast, so in other words that does nothing... he responded with an "oh.. well yeah". Then I'm like "so what's the point of vision if it allows my gun to chop.
So he said that he'll look into the problem. I kept telling him "talk to team Farside.. they all have the problem".
I have a feeling this isn't going to be resolved anytime soon...

Yeah, I get the same feeling too.

Idiot parts at it's finest.
With a highrise the balls fall farther, yes, but gravity makes them speed up over the course of the fall, leaving less gaps in the ball stack. Thats the reason why you can shoot quite a bit faster with a highrise in long strings, theres a higher ball stack, therefore less gaps, therefore a more steady stream of paint. I just dont like them up front, too damn tall!:)

I play with a lowrise on all my guns and I have cricket vision boards installed in both of my Impulses. I haven't had all the problems that supposedly my whole team has been going through.
I did have the problem where I had to clip the spring in one of my solenoids, but that's it.
