what does a ball detent do??

a ball detent is this little part in the breech of your gun. it's purpose is to prevent double feeding

I thought it was the thing in front of the bolt that held tha piantball in place so it doesnt roll into or out of the barrel.

yes. it's the same thing. it does keep the ball in place. if it wasnt there the ball would roll forward during movement, thus allowing 2 balls to be in the breech at one time.
