View Full Version : Field Play - Split General vs. Advanced?

I've noticed a trend in a lot of the pbreview discussions. Many discussions about "surrendering," "bunkering," "rapid fire," etc, have caveats or exceptions for games involving new players.
The largest field in my area has addressed this issue by splitting the players into two groups: General and Advanced.
Advanced Class: You MUST play Advanced if your marker uses batteries in any way (EP, ET, revvy), you have a 'cocker or 'mag.
General Class: This covers everyone else including walk-on rentals. This is really nice. The new players don't have to worry about the guys with the 'mags & angels ripping them apart, while the experienced players don't have to worry about holding back on the new players. This class also offers an opportunity to practice with a pump.
I was wondering how many pbreviewers think this is a good practice or not?
Perhaps if there is a positive response, some of the Field owners/refs who scan this site might be interested in trying the same thing at their Fields. :)

that seems like a good idea but i don't like how if your marker or equipment uses batteries then you have to go to advanced.
the people using spyder sports with a 12volt hopper will now not want to go only against the people with timmies and cockers. they should get rd of the batteries thing.

I don't like those division guidelines but I love the idea. However, it would take a larger number of people to do. If there are only a dozen people at the field in a given day, splitting them seems odd especially since they probably won't split evenly. Anyway, they do this at Forney on the weekends when it gets crowded, and I like it.
haha, guys with batteries have to play advanced, id love to see those spoiled noobs whose parents bought em angels get bunkered in their first game!

Say someone with a phantom or other gun wanted to play advanced, but didnt use batteries or a high end gun...could they?
I think thats a great Idea.

at my field the other day the refs split the groups in2 rentals and non rentals. they did this cause the tippy 68 rentals could not keep u w/ the the cockers and other guns there. it is a prety good idea so that u dont have people who dont know what they are doing running around.

At my field, they only make you play advanced. Nobody gets made to play beginners. If you have a Talon and some balls you are more than welcome to play with 'the aggressives' as they are called. I always wanted to see some 10 year old with a Talon thinking he's all that come and play us. :P I doubt he'd be back for round 2.

a 50 year old dude came to play w/ the people w/ their own guns w/ his m68 and some guy was shooting at 380 fps and put 3 holes thru the newbs shirt. i felt sorry for him cause his whole PB experience was ruined

Up.
I think its a good idea, but what about the new players who buy like a cheap spyder electro or a black dragun( I know they aren't not a true electros)

I hate when people turn up the velocity, my 52 year old dad plays paintball all the time, just as much or more than me! I hate the batteries rule, because some weak electro might be considered an "advanced" gun and a newb could end up being clobered. At our field all the experienced players are friends with the refs and the teams are split up evenly, there's a surrender rule which helps with close shots, but if you are balsy you can take on the person. You just can't shoot back if you're hit.
I do find it sad that someone had a bad experience because some cheater shot 'em up too hot, and shooting holes through his shirt! Ow!

i think that when there are alot of peopel at the feild it should be split up like this
first time players/rental guns
repeat players/ spiders, tippmans, etc.
advanced/electros, cockers, mags.
I think this is a fair way to split people up.:)

It's something that I truly wish could be left up to the player's discretion... unfortunately, many who have developed the "tourney mentality" now apparently lack the part of their brain required to turn that mentality off.
Advanced has nothing to do with your gun. And while experience is largely determined by how long you've been playing, I've seen guys that have been at this for years with no adjustments made to their "look how good I am" attitude... we all know the one: when you shoot them out, you must be some sort of cheater-- or at the very least, shooting hot.
When rental packing noobs get lit up 6 times by Cocker carrying, pod toting "experienced players", then who was at fault? Well, certainly not the noobs, because they, by definition, have little or no idea what they're doing.
If we could all route fire control from brain to trigger finger, I think there would be more people out there on those Saturday walk-ons. Of course, if the so-called "experienced" players could learn that noob is someone to be given your help and guidance, and not an uncalled for bunkering, then we might see people playing more than 2 times as well.

I think its a good idea and makes sense, i agree with UTL . . .
However, what about the infamous that just an angel for his birthday? He'll get put with the agressives' and get wailed on . . . maybe he deserves it though

It should be split up like this.
Advanced - Plays with 2 years or more of experiance must play in advanced.
General - Anyone with less then 2 years of experiance has the option to play in the General division but may choose to play in the Advanced division if they prefer to.

I don't like dividing groups. When I first started, I learned alot from watching the experienced players. In between games I asked questions about what they did and why and what I should do. I also think you will have more fun and learn more if you know there are guys on your team that will cover you when you need it and that you don't have to worry about shooting you in the back while you move up. Sure you might get bunkered but I think that what you learn is worth that risk. It's like anything else you will get better by playing with and against better people.

Ya but that is why you shouldn't restrict people to a lower level of play if they would prefer to play with advanced players. It also give the new players a chance to play with people who haven't been playing for a long time if they feel more comfortable play at their level.

I think that would be a perfect way to set it up . . . but whose to say people will be honest, i am sure some kid with an awesome gun that wants to woop on some newbs will say he has only played a year or something and the other would be at a disadvantage . . . ah well, I think is a good system though.
i think split play is the best idea. not only will it allow bunkering games, it will also keep those filthy *** noobs from having their parents buy an angel as their first marker

its only fun dividing groups when they are too big. but sometimes if the newbs are geting slaughtered then it is smart 2 divide them up.
