Some people say it does, others say it doesn't. It's probably not a very big deal, as there are so many other things that effect a paintball's trajectory that it doesn't have a big enough influence to be a huge selling point of a barrel.

The object of most aftermarket barrels, from the makers perspective at least, is to look and sound better than any others, so you'll get it. Spiral porting, rifling, finish, 1 piece/two piece, ect are just as much marketing buzzwords as they are actualy usefull information about how a barrel works.

Read the stickey about accuracy and range, then get a barrel that you like the look of, hopefully has a quality finish, and isn't too expensive(unless you go with an adjustable bore barrel). 12" is probably as long as you need, but the length is up to you. Ultimatly you'll be the only judge that matters about whether you'll like your marker setup.

If you want to attach a 32" Nickel plated Conduit (.68 Cal hopefully) honed and ported yourself, go for it. If you want to shoot without a barrel, feel free.

Shooting a paintball gun without a barrel is worse than the muzzle loaders from the 1700's. They just don't work very well. But your right you can do it if you want.
