The A-5 is ment for fast play with the Cyclone Feed system. The 98C is made for first time players. Through the 98C you can learn what type of player you are, if you like fast play you should get the A-5. I'd reccommend getting a 98C first, then an A-5 if you think you need to.
Hope this helps. :)
Depends.
Yes the Cyclone hopper is built on, and it's "big". But news flash to some people, what hopper ISN'T a gigantic target just waiting to be hit? As long as you can control the gun well enough, and have good skill, then you'll not get hit there. People that blame getting out due to hopper hits just don't take into account that it's their fault for getting it into the line of fire.
Any ways, that's rambling. As for performance, it's the same. The internals are the same inline design, just very very slightly different. Meaning same design, just not interchangable parts.
So it comes down to do you want a gun that can be field stripped easily, or is it of no concern? Do you like motorized hoppers and not mind changing batteries, or just want to never worry about those again and use the Cyclone force-feed system?
Plus the A-5 has a different barrel system design, so soon many adapters will be made for compatibility with any gun out there. Meaning cocker threads or Angel threads on this gun, but no need to screw in an adapter like it's done currently.
It really is just personal decision. If you like the .45 frame, or the A-5 frame (slightly different). The weight/balance of it. And so on. No matter which one you get, you'll be happy.

the a5 is smaller then the m98c, and the hopper isn't that big, it's actually lower...it may be longer...but it's lower
the price...a5 shoots faster and costs more....that's about it....

A-5s also have the flush cocking and vertical ASA standard, Very nice. And Bill thats one incredible paint job! I remember seeing it at the Tippmann.com forums too, I like it.

I have let several people use my A5 who also have the M98C and they LOVE IT. The one thing that is holding them back from buying one is the price. It has Tippmann Carbine threading for the barrel, so there are other barrels out there for it.
I also let some newbies use the A-5, and they had a blast. None of them have ever played before that day. It is a great comfort knowing that you won't chop a ball. I've had almost 2 cases of paint shot through it and not a single break, chop, or anything of that nature.
I've used both of the markers in question and I would take the A5 hands down. It feels very natural for me. It is accurate, even Flatline users say that it is more accurate than their M98 Flatline.
The quick strip pins are a plus. I've been hit in the cyclone neck twice. A little paint was inside, but did not get into the cyclone feed or on the paintballs in the hopper. The cyclone give the marker a lower profile by 4 inches, but as I said it doesn't mean you would get hit there.
