View Full Version : APG is a bunch of idiots...

Well, I finally snapped and wrote this article. God knows I've been wanting to write it for a long time, but I've finally snapped.
Let's review. The world's leading paintball publication has about the writing level of a second grader that was held back twice. Typos are just the tip of the iceberg. The editor can't spell or write anymore than the writer can, and each issue is full of absolutely abysmal articles that basically say things to the effect of "The first time I shot someone it was with my Stingray II and I killed them good in the goggles. It was fun."
The letters sections contains two things: "Your magazine is the best. I'm a pro paintball player, 12 years old, and shoot a tricked model 98." and then there's the... "And then this one time on King of the Hill..........." letters that have already been written and overreacted to six months ago.
Let me give you an idea of the level of intelligence readers encounter in "Hardcore tech talk" as one issue so delicatly put it.
So far I've seen, in print... "How do I screw on my tank with the thread protector?"
"What does a thread protector do?"
"My double trigger won't fit right, I have a m98 and the box says Angel. What's wrong?"
"I recently saw an ad for a 5000 psi tank. Why does making your gun operate at a higher pressure make a difference?"
And so on......
Then, after all this crap, they start writing reviews, which mainly consist of the conclusion "This is a good starter gun" but evidently they are more than willing to say that a gun is too pricey if they happen to be reviewing a higher end gun...everything else is completely biased (recent issue included a milsim look or not milsim look? article.....milsim is bad for paintball got about one or two small paragraphs of coverage. Milsim look being good for paintball got about 2 PAGES of a response and the article ended.).
And now, dear God help us all, they're starting to put in "Miracle Vitamin" ads and review "herbal tea" in the "new product lineup" section. Seriously. Buy the latest APG and see for yourself.
Now, if that's not bad enough, they start telling everyone how pros and bad behavior and people shooting roadsigns makes the sport look bad.......LIKE THE MAGAZINE DOESN'T? If I picked up APG and never heard a thing about paintball, I'd probably form the opinion of "Geez..they can't even WRITE the biggest publication there is about their sport? How dumb are they?" I mean, heck, Soldier of Fortune and Playboy probably contain fewer errors.
Finally, realize it's the largest paintball magazine for a reason. See all those pages of "Shop at I&I" ads? Like, 7 of them, back to back, advertising WARHAMMER figures for crying out loud! Half the freaking magazine is ads for products that have been out a couple months, or the exact same ad as the prior 9 issues had. And to top it off, half the ads have typos!
You say they're only for newbs? Check out the Angel AIR ads. How about the high tech gun showcasing?
A magazine for tourney ballers then? Mentally retarded ones maybe. I can see it now "Naughty Dogs is disqualified for failing to take the field at game time"....."WHAT? We're trying to get this friggin tank on! Damn thread saver!!"
God help us all if paintballers are anything like APG's staff.

I must say that's a great article. You're totally right about the so called "reviews", you'd think that the editor is frightened of some law-suits or something. It's just hideous how biased they are.
The thread saver letters and other questions are just scary. I mean...were these people sending a letter to a magazine, *waiting* god knows how long for a reply and then going "Dang it Billy-Bob, that there thingy* ya put on, ya meena take i' off!" These people have guns?! ("Marker", whatever...a marker in an idiot's hands is as good as a gun).
Ah well, read PGI instead.
edit: apparently "thing-ay" isn't deemed acceptable by the 'ole censor. Hmmmm.

APG is for rec players who end up saying that brass eagle is the best.P8nt is better.

07-30-2002, 01:59 PM
Yeah, PGI and PB2Xtremes are really good. Paintball is all right sometimes, but I can usually find APG's elements in it somewhere...it's distributed by APG anyway....and then there's Crossfire...a good amg, but drives me nuts that it's so small.

apg and crossfire i thought seemed pretty samy but i think facefull and paintball international are the bomb
ebon, last issue of apg they had an ad for stick on face camo. so when u remove ur mask while playing, u can be camoflauged. :D
seriously, i hate it.

Paintball international is a great magazine if ya ask me. I never found APG to be even slightly informing.

HalB, you serious?! That's just wrong. Anyway, wouldn't they already have goggleflauge, a camo goggle skin and a ghillie suit? Meh, I have no problems with rec-players (am one myself) but the people who try and sell that sorta stuff...that's wrong.

yup . . . before i started getting into paintball and played more I subsribed to APG and I got tired of all the same articles and topics over and over . . . I didn't there was other paintball mags though, then I bought some others like crossfire, p8nt and paintball games . . . I am subscribing to p8nt now, they are so much more up to date with good reviews and more content, APG is thicker but 80% of the magazine is kingman and pbgear ads . . . down with APG  :)

Aw, Dynasty, you don't think I read APG for the articles do you? It's a paintball mag, so if I see a new issue that might have something I haven't seen yet, I'll look at it in the store.

Ya Know what I want! I want a magazine written by the people at Warpig.
They have great tech stuff, they are all over the tourney scene, and they KNOW HOW TO WRITE!! They also don't worship newbs so the articles would be in the perspective of a exspeirenced player.
FrOnTMaN
07-30-2002, 04:42 PM
we should petition them to make a mag. they really are one of the best paintball sources. since they already have a fan base, and they already have a great staff, they can basicly take what they do on the site, and just add a few mag exclusive stuff. then u got a mag worthy of my 5 bux.
VeNoM
07-30-2002, 04:45 PM
Ya thats true, that would be a cool mag. I like have the have alot of comparison and tests and stuff, and they have great tournament coverage . . . We really should petition them, Bill (Mills) . . .

I have read APG at my store but it is hard to read something where only 1 in 8 pages have something. And that isn't even very good.
I like Paintball2xtreme and P8nt. I read Face Full every month at my pro shop but I like P8nt the most. I think I'm going to get a subscription for P8nt pretty soon.
WARPIG is soley operated by Bill and Dawn Mills, husband and wife, definately NOT two "guys".
Of the many tourneys and industry junkets they attend annually; they film, photograph, write about every trip they take. Most of these write-ups, photos, and MPEG movies wind up on WARPIG for your enjoyment and information. More often than not, Dawn winds up on the score-keeping team for many tournaments, in between dashing about the field getting those cool action pics we all share from WARPIG ("Hey cool! I'm on WARPIG, check me out!"). Bill, in between being on the field filming the action as it happens, will seek out an industry leader and get him to reveal on camera, the latest from his company.
On top of all this busy busy work, they both often write for APG and Paintball.
Did I mention that they do not get paid for anything they do on WARPIG? They do it for you. That's all they want to do it for.
Next time you see Bill or Dawn at a tourney, and you will, thank them. Nobody else does so much for our sport.

Has effing APG covered the vegas PSP yet?? I'm still waiting...
APG used to be good, I found one from '96, and It had a bunch of good articles. There was a good one about how to be a small profile, it still helps me today :) .I remember it used to be pretty good, up until about year 2000.
I used to hate PB2X, but I really like it now.
Crossfire smells funny, and it's got a wierd size. It's too short too.
Paintball sports int'l is kinda boring, but It always has the current standings, so I glance at it when I go to pick up PB2X.
Iv'e flipped thru FaceFull once, it seemed really well covered, but they're REALLY expensive, what? ten bucks per mag?
that's my magazine experience....

Yup, I love flipping through the letters page. It's invariably "I love you guys! I can't wait until I am 12 so I can buy my own gun and play paintball wars!" and then you have the editor's comment "you are da futur of da sportt. But pleez dont call it PAINTBALL WAR. We preefer da term DYEING AT A DYSTANCE."
Or you get letters saying "why are there no real fields in my area that will let me play? I am 7 years old and I own my own Angel." The response? "You are da futur..."
But seriously, APG has for a long time been a newbie magazine. Every issue has a "What's it like" or "My first time" articles in it, and of course never a bad product review, except for price.
And the ads! Man, you only need to look at APG once a year and you see all the ads, because most never seem to change.
Since APG is owned by the same company that makes Kung Fu and Ninja magazines, you're going to get some of that crunchy granola herbal tea stuff bleeding through... not much you can do.
But hey... if you don't like it, don't buy it, man! Buy Paintball International of Face Full, like I do.

p8nt and face full are the best by far... I have I thing 6 or 7 Face full mags... and 1 p8nt but I love it. It talks about the Warp touier.
It has vary littal about wood players... Most of the time They make fun of them for dressing up like Barbarians and run around for 24 hours completting quest whant you get... a C98 or crap Zap paint... While Turrnie players that place 6 get $500 markers and 10 cases of quality paint... ha ha ha I love it.
Im going to get more issues for Facefull and P8nt.
So I get more picks off... You know and love

i agree with all of you, apg sucks... way too much newbie info... and how many times have i seen the ronin gear ad? like a million times... and another thing i noticed with almost every single apg they all start off with the same ads in a row, the first page is always an rps ad, then the table of contents/ f4 ad, then the spyder cup 10th year anniversary thing, then imagine/espirit ad, the either a pic of a flash or an e-99, and then the next page is wutever one of those 2 they didnt show on the page before it, then the one that says r u a kingman dealer and has the chick on the jetski, then gear bag and some cocker ads, then it kinda starts having different stuff... out of the whole mag there r like 4 articles... soemtimes a helpful one... i just get them cuz they have a lot fo pictures that i cut out and put all over the walls of my room :) and because i live in a small *** town and apg is the only mag that save mart carries lol

any of you guys have the website to p8nt. My crossfire subscription just expired and I want a better mag. Damn crossfires are always the same. New paintball place opens, so and so won this tourny, and then they cap it off with some newbie article. It really got boring after the first few articles, I could almost predict what they would write next month.:eyes:
You guys crack me up! Really!
"Every time I read APG it sucks." Then why the heck are you reading it...AGAIN?
LOL:D I bet the editors of APG are laughing at you too, for reading their mag every month, just to complain about it!

About a month ago when my family and I were going to Cedar Point (roller coaster park, no paintball :() on vacation, we stopped at a Wal-Mart to pick up a 12 pack of coke and a bag of ice for the cooler. I went to the magazine rack and got an APG, having never read one. Buying it was the biggest mistake ever. The spelling was horrid, it was pretty much all ads, and all that boring crap you said, Ebonclaw. I finished all the articles in 45 minutes and had to endure the remaining 6 hours to Sandusky, completely bored and cramped because the Taurus has no leg room in the back seat.

You could've sat on it. They're so thick that it'd raise you enough to give just the little bit of extra legroom. Put those ads to good use!
Like CasualtiesPunk, I managed to use pretty much an entire issue to cover the cabinet I keep my gear in, one or two action pics and a few ads of guns. Looks ok, but I think I'll re-do it with some old PGIs.
