View Full Version : why does everyone take it for granted that dye is the best barrel company?

i want honest opinions about the following questions, i'm not trying to piss people off. i just want people to think.
1) what qualities would make a boomstick the best barrel?
2) why wouldn't, in theory, a different company be able to do the same?
3) how does dye justify charging so much if companies like j 'n j and smartpart can make a great barrel for way less $?
most think, "if the pros use them, boomsticks must be the best!" to them i say, "you would have to be stupid to turn down a free barrel." i look forward to your responses.
ps: does anybody know where i can get a flex hone and oil? my friend and i have been experimenting with porting, a drillpress and a stock cocker barrel. once it's honed, i'd be willing to bet it'd keep up with most aftermarket barrels. it's already quieter than a 14" carbonfiber.
(i'd like to add that i shoot 3 different smartparts barrels and a lapco bigshot, and all of them are awesome)

boomsticks are very nice barrels. they are pretty expensive but they are very well made. the honing inside makes it slick and VERY accurate. and its made to last.

Part of the reason dye barrels cost so much is that you're paying something like $40 for the brand name. It's the same thing with WDP. The barrels really don't live up to the hype. Espicially now with so much competition. Now, you see more and more teams using Freaks than ever before, because you can buy a base freak for the same as a boomy, or a full kit for about $50 more, and its a much more superior barrel.

true, u do pay for the brand name. also, the smart parts 2k2 is very similar in performance to the boomy.

Yeah, the 2k2 All-Americans preform at basically the same level of the boomstick, but cost a full $50-60 less.

I used to shoot a DYE boomstick and its collecting dust in my bag right now. I loved shooting it....thought it was an excellent barrel. At the time I bought it 2 years ago, it was the top of the line on the market. Personally I coudnt find a GOOD interchangable 2 piece barrel...at the time.....NOW though, I have something worth letting the DYE collect dust. I got a Longbow barrel from Titanium Paintball. Its great....I love it. I have an Impulse and an Autococker....one tip is used for both. The backs are Titanium....so they're lighter than the boomstick. They shoot really well too. Oh...and I saw in my local store today that paintball News has a review about them!!! Take a look at it....whats the guy said is right on about the barrel!
Peace

Have you looked down the inside of a Lapco Big Shot? Absolutely perfect mirror finish all the way down the barrel, yet it is less than half than the cost. Granted its one piece, I agree that a big part of what you are paying for is the "Dye" name that is one the side of it... I personally think Dye products (pretty much all of them) are over priced. A lot of it is good quality but there are other companies out there than can make products just as well, if not better for MUCH less... I also have to agree that boomsticks are loosing popularity to freaks, but I think its sad that people are buying boomsticks simply because they see pros use them... They usually don't pay for them, they are sponsored, get them for free and they work well of course they are going to use them...
To be honest, for the price of a Boomstick I think there are a lot of other good options that you could go with. I personally would probably get a Lapco Big Shot -and- an Autospirit... Then you would have 2 very high quality barrels for different size paints for the price of one.

i've looked down the sides of many barrels. they all look mirror like. the big shot being no exception. that 2 is a good barrel. im not saying i like the boomy, which i dont, but u gotta give it its props. its just too overpriced.

I had this one explained to me by Darren, a freind and player at my local field who used to play with Team Extreme.
Dye is a fairly old name in paintball, and one of the oldest names in barrel manufacturing. However, when it came on the market making barrels, paintball had still been around for a while. At that point, aftermarket barrels were not as widely available as today, and the paint/bore match had never been considered. Now, most paintballs at that point were industry standard, about .688-.690, however, no one manufacturing aftermarket barrels really paid much attention to bore size. .68 was good enough for them, and as for stock barrels, well, they ALWAYS sucked. Dye, however, through either stroke of genius or sheer luck, started out making barrels that happened to fit the paint of the day very nicely, and used precise machinery, so the barrels were pretty much the EXACT bore size every time, which of course fit the paint used. Later, when paint/barrel match came into public eye, other barrel companies realized what they had to do: machine barrels to fit the paint, and not just make the inside of a barrel really really shiny. by now, Dye has made a LOT of money off of their famous "boomstick" and has fine tuned expensive machinery and uses fine metals. Granted they are overpriced, but they are indeed VERY fine barrels. The stinless steel backs attracted many people because it was scratch resistent, and the aluminum front happened to be light.....so....while now just about any barrel you can buy will compete equal to or greater than Dye's level, Dye boomsticks have earned a reputation and are not going to lose it anytime soon.
Basically, it's not that the Dye barrel is a "God" barrel, it's that when Dye started making barrels, none of the other aftermarket barrels were being made right to begin with, their bore size wasn't paid much attention to.

And like everyone else has agreed, there are other barrel companies out there. Quality wise....the interior finish of MOST barrels are about the same. The Stainless ones of course give a tougher finish and better durability over standard Aluminum. But, the new Longbow has a Titanium back.....giving it something over even stainless barrels even in the interior finish can you see a difference and superiority in it.
Wolf said that the Boomies are overpriced...and I agree. They're old news....

Thats because those barrels dont use honing they use a diffrent finish which is much better than honing those barrels are soooo sweet.

Why DYE? Because I know, that without a single doubt, any DYE product I buy, barrel wise, is going to be flawless out of the box. Accurate, good looks, great engineering, and it'll do what it's prescribed to do. Their quality control is unserpassed. I've owned 3 Freaks, 2 were screwed from the time I got them, I've owned... about... 5 CPs, almost none of them have had problems, but some have had crappy anno, chips, stupid stuff like that. If I forget/break/loose my barrel in any form at a tournoment, I got straight to the DYE both, because I know they have what I need with no BS.
