View Full Version : What is the best marker?

Hi,
I consider myself not TOO knew to the sport of paintball, but a lot of people probably disagree. I've played about four times and I am very interested in it. There are several "unnofficial" paintball fields around my town, and I and my friends are currently building one extra just for recreation. Once this is complete, I plan on buying a paintball marker, but I am having trouble deciding on which one to buy. I have been studying for a very long time on different paintball markers but many of the reviews are not the greatest help... they sometimes contradict each other (One person will say that balls are chopped all the time, and the next person will say they are never chopped). I don't wish to spend thousands of dollars on guns such as angels, but I have been checking out Spyders and such. I originally wanted a Spyder Shutter, but heard from a few people that they weren't that great, especially for the price. Then I studied the Sheridan, but after reading some of pbreview.com reviews, it didn't seem that good. But after all that, I was recommended the Tippman Model 98. I checked out the reviews and they seem pretty good... plus the price puts a smile on my face! Although I've heard that this marker was durable, it is plastic, and I'm a little hesitant to get it. I hope someone can help me decide.
Well, if anyone could give my some viewpoints on which markers are currently best for a person of my skills and budget, I would be very thankful. I hope to receive some help.
Thanks a lot,
SwiftShot
P.S. Apparently the stock barrels aren't very good on any of these markers, so I'd appreciate your opinion on what barrels are best as well. Thanks!

Well i am fairly new to the sport also but I have shot a tippman custom 98. I myself didn't like it, I am about 5'5" and 120lbs (fairly good shape) and it seemed like it was too big. If you use the co2 as a stock than you will have to have long arms for it to be comferatble at all. I have fired my friends piranha g2 and it seemed pretty good, I hecka shot more accuratley with it than the tippman and it felt really nice. I myself am getting a piranha sts g2 and and it is on the way(I got it on ebay).

I recently got my Piranha STS G2, and it's great for a newb such as me, and probably good for you. I fired my friend's M98 and my brother's Spyder SE, and I didn't like the feel of either, so I decided to buy the STS G2 w/o trying it seeing as how it was the other highly reccomended starter gun, probably a bad idea, but I am very satisfied. I havent got around to upgrading the barrel yet, but it performs well stock. I can not guarantee that you won't be dissapointed, because it's all about your feel and style, but I can tell you that I am very happy w/ my Piranha.

piranhas are great, great trig pull, if its ur first gun and need help, customer service is great, unlike kingman(im talkin bout kingman company not the gun, Xtra is tyte, and i would buy if i had the money.)piranhas are versatile to, lotso upgrades if u look around., great feel, tippmann are actually ok, its really long but its durable, its not plastic, die-cast aluminum, body+frame not drilled out, poured into a mold. but problem wit m98, not as versatile as a newbie might like it to be, cant really take bout 70% of the upgrgrades out there(not countin barrels, but exchambers, ext.)but there are a lot of upgrades made specially for the m98, good reason to buy m98 are two words.....reactive trigger.BEAUTIFUL!!!!!!!!!!!!supa fast, and great to jus lay the paint down.id buy either a SPyder COmpact 2k, piranha g3(vert feed or powerfeed ur choice), Spyder Xtra, or Piranha G3 Pro, depending on ur price range.Spyder Java 2-in-1 is great deal too.

go spyder, i dont like tippmann to stupid, to long, to hard to clean. its stupid that u need to take half of it off to clean. its too easy to loose parts. go spyder alot better.

piranhas are better than spyders, spyders and the company that makes them are terrible. piranha customer service is the best i have encountered out of every company i have ever come in to contatct with. they will help you with your upgrades and tell you how to do them. spyders arent as reliable adn kingman isnt as good as PMI. tippmans are also really sweet, if you get the model 98 coustom there is so much stuff you can do to it that you wont buy another gun. they are built like tanks and never break. if you get one buy a RT, i faced one last weekend and got friggin scared so much i almost got up and ran off the field. those things shoot so fast its retarded.

Why the hell does everyone have to say _________________ is better than ________________________. In reality only a drunk moron would go into a Torunament with a Stock Spyder or any other stock blow back (besides a mag [yes, it does have blowback]). First off the CS reps for both companys could not tell the elbows from a....whole in the ground. Kingman just refuses to answer the phone, and PMI's are just plain @$$ dumb (in my experience). I recomend a Compact, you recomend a Pirahna of some sort. Just dont flame other people's guns.

Spyders have one the largest amounts of upgrades than any other gun. You can get spyder parts at any website, or proshop

Well, a 98 is really a good gun, but you're definately gonna wanna hold the gun before you buy it. It's pretty long..you dont need long arms to hold it, but its inconvient in tight places. I now use a Piranha EXT Pro G3. It's a great gun. Really alot more my style. So if you don't wanna spend 240 on a gun, you can't go wrong with an STS G3. Take our opinions with very little worth...sure we like them, but you may not. All this spyders are better and piranhas rule crap means jack. You really ought to shoot a gun a couple of times before you make a decision. Can't go wrong with PMI, Kingman, or Tippman.

if you have been playing paintball for a long wile like myself and others and you started out with a talon pump or a sting ray 2 then went to a spyder, pirranah, or tippman then went to an impulse shocker(hell yeah), intimmidator and so on you realize the money you could of saved and just went electro or autococker or mag in the first place but if you are a nebie and you see the high prices and say that is some crazy S H I T spendin that much on a paintball gun but as you play and get more obsessed you slowly upgrade and soon you could of gotten the next step up in the chain of guns but you only have an upgraded blowback so you wait more and sell your gun for half of what it is worth to get an actual gun you will stick with and you look back and wonder WHY THE H**L did't i just get this in the first place so if you are obsessed enough to build your own feild then wait a wile to get a GOOD GUN not to be discouraging or anything BUT YOU WILL THANK GOD YOU WAITED but who cares this is just me speaking i have only a measly 34 posts (Dammit i shoud have been on the internet posting instead of playing paintball *NOT*)so have some advice from an actuall PERSON WHO PLAYS AND DOSENT JUST POST HUNDREDS OF THINGS ALL DAY ON THE INTERNET but what ever this is long as hell and i hope it helps you

sts g3, u can choose vert feed or powerfeed, and the new flush cocking bolt is cool cause u wont need to worry bout a hole in your goggle lens if u dont have a beavertail, great system if u play recball a lot(tourneys require a beavertail)

its all about preference. i like the spyder i can trust them. if i have a problem with it i ask some one at the field. I like how i can basically customize my gun due to the wide variety of upgrades. my friend keep saying i should buy an electro but why. it just an expensive marker, nothing special.
as for tippmanns i dont like them cause they are way too long. the gun stock with a tank is two feet long. when you need to take them apart to clean them you half to take half of it off. thats anoying. with spyder three screws and you set. thats alot easier than taking off a side.

i totally dis agree it's not just an expensive marker tell me something that a blowback gun has on it that is better than an electro besides the price and have you evern shot an electro for more than a hopper full and oh my god this gun is to long what are we turning in to little M.A.P.'s and whiners i mean come on so the gun is long i have a spyder and love spyders but seriously a tippmann is better due to the fact you can upgrade it to hell and back i mean the upgrades on the spyder don't really do all that much rear cocking oh my it does nothing as do all the other misc. upgrades the only thing you need on a spyder is a decrent 6 stage expansion chamber and a good barrel like a J&J or a boomstick what does an electro have on a spyder EVERYTHING more accurate, quiet, more relyable, MUCH MUCH faster rate of fire, and has feild removable bolt it takes 2 seconds to take bolt off and you need no tools just unscrew with hand run strait squeege throug and it is clean so there if you still think there is no diff from blow back to electro then go shoot one for a while it may suck to u at first because your used to teh huge trigger pull of your spyder but the trigger pull is so little on an electro it takes a little time to get used to well there you have it Mr there is no diff

it all depends on what you like go to some fields and ask to try some of the people's gun out ask to shoot some guns you know that theey are in your price range.i am a pretty small 14 year old (5'4")105lbs ok build and im with xander tippmans are excellant guns but are really long i my self for my size like the lighter gun and the smaller like the spyder compact 2000 or the piranha pro g3.i now have a spyder EM1 at working on getting it up to my standards and it is an awsome gun i if i do say so my self.so get what suits you

U said the 98 was plastic? Not so my friend (just the bottom of the front grip). Dont listen to anybody who says the 98 is bad, i have owned a custom 98 and a SPyder and i still love my 98. It will always have a place in my heart. If someone says "its heavy and uncomfortable" they are wrong, if you cant carry a 2.9 pound gun you are WEAK and i love the feel of it with the foregrip (its like the rifles im used to). Its a gret gun especially for the price. My new gun is a Spyder Xtra. A little more but well worth it especially the feild strip feature. If your like me you will like to look at the guts of your gun to clean/oil or just figure out how it works (taking apart a 98 and putting it back together is a nightmare). So Spyders are the way to go for feild stripping, Tippmanns are built like a tank so you wont ever need to strip it, just some oil now and then. In my opinion on barrels you should get a J&J 2 peice, its a boomstick for $20 less! If you dont like J&J go with any Smart Parts barrel, i love em all. And 32 degrees makes good, cheap barrels if u dont like the idea of shelling out $80 for a barrel(I can get that J&J for $60 around here). I reccomend the Sniper, Carbon fiber or Nyte Stikk. Happy paintball!!!!!!

Well, the only prob with the 98 is the paintjob on the gun. It scratches off so easily, but its cool, the scratches are like your custom job on the marker.

angel is the best gun sheer and simple
but for under 100 it is a spyder, 100-220 is a shutter
and it goes on like that it depends on your type of play and your skill rather than the gun so it is hard to ssay

If you want a smaller gun that you can count on go with the Spyders or piranhas. If you want a beater gun(one you can beat the crap out of and still have it work) but thats longer get a tippmann.

You've all forgot about nu-line. the bruizer outlaw series IMO is waaay more durable than any spyder or pirahna. My outlaw is a tank. and it has the feel of a spyder, and takes spyder upgrades. If you break a bruizer its becuase you're a jack ***. but to each his own. I'm considering a Free Flow cocker or a Shocker in a few months.

I have a Tippmann 98 Custom. Anyway, I have a friend who has a Spyder Compact 2000. His gun is alright, the only thing I don't like about his gun is, the Trigger pull isn't good, and the accuracy could be a lot better. I personally have never fired a Piranha, so I have nothing good or bad to say about them. Another good gun that none of you have mentioned is the ACI F4-Illustrator, that is a good gun. Just buy a new barrel for it and you got a fine piece of equipment. I personally suggest the Tippmann 98, although I have never fired the Piranha. I would choose the Tippmann over the Spyder Compact anyday. Also, if you whine about cleaning the Tippmann 98 Custom and that you have to take it apart, than you shouldn't be playing. If your really into the sport you should take your gun apart every so often and do a complete check-up and cleaning anyway. If you aren't, buy a Stingray...
