View Full Version : 2 steps forward, one step back?

About two months ago my recently-formed team played a rather large 5-man tourney and finished tied for third. We had very little tournament experience but somehow we managed to win games.
We played a tournament yesterday very similar to the 5-man played in July and we did embarrassingly awful. Whereas at the July 5-man we managed about 5 hangs in 8 games, we couldn't even manage ONE hang at the 5-man yesterday. This event was mostly the same as the 5-man in July.

It's mostly the same team, but with MUCH more experience (since we played some more tournaments and did a good bit of scrimmaging). We had one very weak link at the July 5-man and we swapped him for a good player with lots of tourney experience so our roster is even stronger. I personally felt like I was 100x better then I was at the last tourney, but it didn't seem to matter.

When we tied for 3rd at the July 5-man I felt like we owned this game, now I don't know what to think. I guess we got a slice of humble pie. I'm trying to convince myself that this is just a "2 steps forward, one step back" situation, and we'll hop back on the horse soon.

Has this happened to anybody else? Going from the top of the world to the bottom of the ocean. Words of encouragement would be appreciated. :(

edit: Meant to post this in Tourney Talk but forgot. Sorry.

We all have good days and bad. If you do misseribly in a tourney, don't dwell on it much. maybe a little bit to see what went wrong, then forget about it. If you think about it too much you'll start to think negative about your team, and that is BAD. Hop back on the horse and start practicing, and for now, go to a tourney for experiance. DO NOT go to win. If you go to win with all this confidence, guess what? Chances are you won't. Until you're serious, are experianced, and rockin, you're there to play and get better. If you win that's awesome. If not, hey that's cool too you learned a lot.

Naw, he just sucked badly (no communication, no kills). The player w/ more experience is a good player, and I've seen him tear it up before, he just had a bad day.

See man, that's not the point though. A team is just that, a team. Not a throw together of a bunch of skilled individuals, but a bonded unit that can work and adjust with itself, using that bond to over come any short coming that team may have. I'd take a team thats been together for 3 years over a throw together of ameatuer players, because I know the team will still be there for each other no matter what goes down.

You need more then "good players" to make a team. It's the players ability to work well with others. You could have the greatest player ever with 100's of hits/hangs but can't work with a team. You'll lose every time. That player is only thinking of himself and not the team. You take the "ok" player that always knows where his teammates are, what they're doing, where they're going, covers when he's supposed to, communicates well and you will do better. That player is looking more to how can my team win other then how many "kills" do I have. A team NEEDS to be able to work together. If they can't, you'll lose. I don't care how good you are with your marker.

Yeah, we've got some issues that are being resloved, that wasn't a fun day, especially because I couldn't get a straight story from anyone.
