Safety,
On Autocockers you can push the cocking rod in when fireing to make the ram slam into the valve harder, thus increasing your velocity and shooting hot. The beaver tail keeps your from bumping it while shooting.
Also it helps you keep your goggle lens outta the way incase you did have the marker shooting infront of your face.
I think thats the main reason that spyders and such had them, to keep things away from the bolt when the marker is cycling.

On an added note, most blowback guns now are coming with "flush cocking" or top cocking systems that eliminate the need for a beaver tail allowing you to play tighter wiht the gun more "in your face".

The other reason for Beaver tails on Cockers is to protect the cocking rod from being damaged.
